I, very honestly, couldn't care less about a new version of X-Plane. already multi-threaded and with a "new scenery engine" would require updates for all of my addons, including aircraft and sceneries.

The only payware scenery - actually library - I ever purchased for Xp12 was Orbx Global Forests. 99% of my addons are aircraft, weather, AI Traffic.

But, even if a new version of X-Plane would require redefinition of aircraft specification formats, and updating addons would have to be paid, I would accept it provided the new technology brought something really better than what it is today, just as I happily moved from older versions of MSFS to new ones, the last upgrade being from FS 2020 to FS 2024, or learned to live with the "streaming concept" which is probably where most companies will base their offers in the future and MS and other big player are really investing.

So, it's just evolution... or Evolution...

Same applies to an Online Store...

I know you speak Portuguese as your first language and the rest of your text shows the real context - but the way you phrased this in English, it could be misunderstood as if you are not interested in a new version of X-Plane.

I believe what you are trying to say is that you don´t worry about if a new version of X-Plane brings about changes?

Quietly noted the pointer to next gen scenery - interesting and exciting but ominous that they are reviewing the bones of scenery design which they say is dated and 20 years old- dsf files. This is a major hurdle and one that makes me nervous that we will suddenly get a whole new system which renders useless or broken a truckload or mountain of work being done via WED and the Gateway (Surely they would'nt you think but then again XP12 sure broke a lot of stuff that was fine in XP11.)

They've already mentioned that the sim will continue to support DSF files as well because there is simply too much legacy stuff out there. Devs (those that still care) will be able to move their scenery over time to the new system.

Yes, I see your point... It's a long sentence, and I missed the word "IF", but if one reads it to the end it's semantics are clear - couldn't care less IF such a new version with those new features would make my present addons not compatible, because I would rather prefer to have a better and even more feature full version of X-Plane...

But thx for the note anyway Janov ! 🙏

Actually at another thread I had posted about a "Marketplace" in X-Plane, because I find it a great idea!

For me what matters is that development continues, and preferably grows as much as possible in quality and quantity. After all, X-Plane is still one of my preferred flight simulators ever, even if I also really like MSFS, DCS, Condorsoaring, IL-2, Aerowinx...

It's strange, but the more time I spend with X-Plane 12, the less I find myself enjoying MSFS 2024. The more I hear that MSFS is the “prettier” sim, the more I frown - the lighting and clouds themselves more than make up for any perceived advantage to MSFS autogen.. I recently picked up the BlackSquare Bonanza for MSFS 2024, but I’m not getting much enjoyment out of the sim to use it. For me, the biggest factors are the lighting and weather, completely overriding any advantage with other art assets in MSFS 2024.

I’ve been using the Map Enhancement tool in XP12, but I’ve run into quite a few scenery loading errors leading to XP12 crashing, despite having a system that shouldn’t be struggling. Because of that, I’ve covered the USA in Level 16 ortho using Ortho4XP v1.4. When planning a flight, I upgrade the ortho in the departure/arrival airport tiles to Level 17, with Level 18 around the airports themselves.

If the next-gen default scenery ends up looking anything like the video shared earlier by @mSparks, I doubt I’ll feel much need for custom ortho anymore.

Even after doing much the same for my home range, I still see too much wrong to enjoy the scenery.

so I inevitably end up flying back in an Orbx TrueEarth region.

and when I’m flying something REALLY great AND involved like the new-to-me TorqueSim SR22T, the scenery fidelity issue fades.

and TBH, I’ve taken more and more to night flying. It forces me to stay sharp on instruments, and if I can’t see the scenery, I can’t be bothered by it.

Still, the bar has been permanently raised - even Lockheed Martins new Prepar3D-ish Fuse flight sim is largely focused on visual fidelity through the Unreal engine.

So many troubled by scenery. Doesnt bother some of us at all. Would like some Aussie trees though

I had to Google this, but wow, they’ve clearly been busy (This would have been huge news a few years ago). It looks like they’re using the same autogen tech we see in MFS, just running inside Unreal Engine. Very cool stuff, though I doubt it’ll be in the hands of us normies anytime soon.

As for next-gen scenery, the details are still pretty thin, but honestly I’m not expecting them to try going toe-to-toe with MS and their practically endless resources. What I am hoping for is a flexible, well-designed system that lets devs build efficient and good-looking scenery. Give us a default world that looks good, feels plausible, and doesn’t just default to "somewhere in the USA or Germany." If they nail that foundation I'm sure third-party devs and modders will happily take it the rest of the way.

I’m not sure “troubled” is the right word. Other sims have significantly modernised their scenery, and by comparison XP12’s default environments are showing their age. Laminar has done an outstanding job with lighting and weather, and I think ground scenery deserves the same level of attention moving forward.

That's not smelling like consumer market competition. Nor did their YT video make a jaw drop.

Well said! I agree the default XP12 scenery is definitely showing its age and needs the same level of attention moving forward. I am looking forward to seeing what Laminar comes up with.

Yep!

And if you think about it, it’s kinda similar to what MS/Asobo did: they took a flight sim and mashed it up with a world sim.

it’s completely unclear if any of that will bleed over to the current P3D, or if an “Academic” edition of Fuse will be offered for consumers

it wouldn’t go over well with civ simmers right now, anyway. All the airports are military!

agreed on XP next gen. It just seems folks don’t realize that it’s going to be more like you’re describing and not like the MSFS “digital twin”.

Many of the XP scenery assets are fine - the two main things to fix (and among the most difficult) are the elevation meshes and ground textures

if what @mSparks shared with us above is along the lines of where LR are going, I’d say that takes us a long way towards plausibility!
