Missing landing gear saga in MSFS 2024 ...

For the most part you'll be impressed with MSFS 2024 SU4 ... there are still other issues that I doubt will be fixed in MSFS 2024 ... maybe MSFS 2028?  These are:

  • Intelligent path finding (vehicles/ships/aircraft) to prevent them moving thru other objects.
  • Being able to jump out of one vehicle/aircraft/boat/etc. into another.
  • Ocean elevation issues that cause water walls/cracks.
  • Fix all 2D cutout bridges.
  • Better AI to determine obelisk tree vs. real tree.
  • Much further shadow LOD so that rendering of shadows isn't so obvious and "wave" like.

It's hard to pin down, but MSFS FOV just seems off ... always in a fishbowl ... like living in a wide angle lens even when on Zoom's in to adjust, still feels like I'm living in a bubble instead of on top of the bubble ... if that makes any sense?

You WILL still have to use your blind eye, but it is getting better ... slowly but surely.  BUT, MSFS 2024 is better than MSFS 2020 in just about every way.

EDIT: some of the shipping and water issues (the ships look awesome ... great job SeaFront Simulations):

Watching your video, I really am struck by how good we have it these days. I'm not talking about the bugs, agree those need to be fixed and all that. But the lighting engine and just the ground.. it really does feel real in a way no other sim ever did previously. XP 12 is also gorgeous in the air and from altitude. As a simmer, I am grateful to have this level of quality AND the amazing performance of SU4!

The problem with landing gears is way worse in 2024 (for me)

But with my upgraded rig the sim is better than 2020 in every possible other metric, so it was worth the move.

I don’t even notice the missing gear most of the time. I’m too busy looking at my own aircraft and the one in front me of, which is close enough for it not to happen

That's currently the best way to handle it until it gets fixed by MS/Asobo and a/c modelers.

Seems like we still have not managed to talk about the same issue here.
The missing landing gear bug I (and many others) have, is that landing gear disappears on VATSIM model matching aircraft (AIG and FSLTL equally) only on arriving traffic.
This is irrelevant, wether the AI model is 500m away or 5m away. Hence, also "the one in front" of a simmers POV is also affected. It's just not true that "it's close enought for it not to happen".
That bug can absolutely not be unseen, when flying online and experiencing it.

I'm happy for you that you don't get this bug in MSFS2024 and I'm really looking forward to test the latest vPilot version that happens to fix that issue at least for VATSIM online simmers.

I never said I didn't.

Have you updated vPilot? This has been fixed for days now.

If I had to pick one of those, it would be the shadows

Those elevation issues in water seem to have been resolved in MSFS 2020. I would have thought that was also the case in MSFS 2024. What are "2D cutout bridges"? Obelisk trees will not be a problem for me, as I do not use photogrammetry.

Affirm, sir, but haven't been able to test it yet (or rather: waiting for Justflight's Fokkers to be released to re-start simming again).
Still, the issue is fixed for VATSIM pilots, but not for those who fly offline and use AIG and FSLTL models, as far as I have understood this, since I fly online exclusively.

The severity will vary by location … the video was in your part of this planet, UK Southampton ports.

As far as 2D cutout bridges you’ll see them if you turn on PG, they’re everywhere … it’s why I buy CityScapes which replaces them in the more common locations.  You really should go the PG route since you’re an “accuracy” person.  You gonna have to use a blind eye no matter what route you go … soooo.

BTW, the solar farms add-in works very well also.  The SeaFront Vessels needs the Vessel Core installed from Market place or download … why these are separate I have no idea??  Never heard of an installation that doesn’t include the dependencies it requires in order to work … but that does seem about normal for flight sims … I guess some devs get lonely and want support tickets 😉  hehe

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. - Carl Sagan

Do you mean the "solid" bridges that are a problem with photogrammetry enabled? As for PG being realistic......well, it certainly looks good from altitude, but get anywhere close to the ground, and it starts to look rather poor (low resolution textures/warped buildings/tree obelisks etc). My opinion (at least as far as MSFS 2020 is concerned) is that the autogen buildings look acceptable at all distances. I use a handful of city packs to spice up a few locations, although I would love to have a few more.

As for the Global Shipping addon.....am I right in thinking that there are a limited number of different models (maybe 50-100)? Whilst these look good in the screenshots that I have seen, the freeware GAIST addon has hundreds of different models, including warships, sailing ships, and other unique vessels. This is definitely going to be my first option, assuming that it works as well as it does in MSFS 2020.

That's a separate issue. The two are not the same thing - which can be seen from the fact that the VPilot/Vatsim issue is fixed.

AIG issue is being worked on, according to Kai from AIG, they've sent Asobo some findings. Hopefully we get a fix for that soon and can put this behind us.

For me the missing gears are the same in 2020 as in 2024. However im in VR, and with VR the visible distance is again shorter due to the field of view is larger, that again zooms the camera more out. This is the total most annoying thing about the sim.

Ok, that's interesting.

Pure speculation, but I thought vPilot was just reloading arrivig aircraft, making the sim treat it like it was a just connected aircraft at the stand.
This would be one way to circumvent the only issue I have (more like: had, because of this fix (yet to be tested on my side)) with permanently disappearing landing gear on arriving traffic only, regardless of the distance to them.
To my understanding, this issue only happened on my side, when an aircraft was initially loaded outside a specific radius around my position.
Reloading it when it's closer to me relative to it's original position would fix this.
