Missing landing gear saga in MSFS 2024 ...

The ideal situation would be for Asobo to include support for MSFS 2020 LODs, so that hundreds of existing models do not have to be rebuilt, and the flight simulation community can relax and be confident that the word "Simulator" at the end of the product title actually means something

By continuously supporting legacy items is why we find ourself in the situation that we are... with a lot of things.

It's an unfortunate circumstances having to rebuild things but such is the nature to make some kind of advances.

Also what bearing does modelling fidelity have to do with MSFS being a simulator or not?

Well apparently they did for models built in 2020, or so they think.  But you can't have the same level of graphical detail with across the board 2020 LODs.  So no, stick with 2020, or encourage devs to rebuild stuff properly for 2024, IMHO.

I was just thinking about AI planes "floating around" airports. Not exactly the kind of immersion that I want. To be honest, this is one of those issues that is worrying me with respect to upgrading to MSFS 2024. I see the "missing landing gear" problem in MSFS 2020, but I have the horrible feeling that it will be even worse in MSFS 2024. That does not fill me with a huge amount of confidence

It isn't.

I, for my part, must say, it is way worse in FS24 than it was in FS20.
I haven't had a single issue with missing landing gear in FS20 (and took hundreds of VATSIM flights with AIG and FSLTL installed), but in FS24, like every second arriving traffic is missing gears when parked right next to you.

I tend to agree with that, but these AIG models do “seem” to be following 2024 SDK specs so I’m hoping Kai’s submission to Asobo and the forum bug report link will gain some traction and have Asobo either clarify what needs to happen to make it work correctly or make code adjustments/fixes to make it work.

Supporting 2020 LODs isn't going to fix this problem because it's something that's pravalent in both sims. Not that it matters anyway because FS24 will work just fine with FS2020 LODs, it's just not optimal.

Chris, be honest with yourself, you actively go hunting for reasons not to upgrade to FS24 and that's entirely your perogative but the issue here is effecting both sims.

Yeah hopefully we get some answer to it because at tiimes the issue is even random.

This is what bugs me about the MSFS 2024 saga. Far too many contradictions. One person says one thing, and the next guy says the exact opposite. It is incredibly frustrating. Despite this, I will see it with my own eyes soon enough, because my decision to install MSFS 2024 on the new PC is non negotiable. I need to upgrade now before I get left behind. I will not be installing MSFS 2020 as a "backup". That is not how I work. I will bite the bullet, and deal with any issues when/if I find them.

I am actually looking forward to installing MSFS 2024, even though I am apprehensive about what I will find. I will finally be able to experience first hand whether the critical comments are warranted, or if the party at the FB camp is absolutely justified.

Maybe I will be surprised? After all, stranger things have happened

On a side note, I really wish that Microsoft would sort out the Bing textures southwest of EGSU Duxford. The edge of the annoying joint between the "green field textures" and the "burned to a crisp beige textures" is located in that area, and there is an extension to this where the textures flicker and change annoyingly. You can see it do exactly the same thing if you check Bing maps online, and zoom in and out  Stuff like that kills the experience for me....

Thanks, I did some days ago but haven't managed to take a flight yet after the update.

I suspect that you will be pleasantly surprised.. The streaming architecture actually works, thin client etc..  The flight dynamics are excellent, even your 2020 planes fly better..  And performance overall is surprisingly good, even in heavy scenery..

The Bing data is still the Bing data, so there I would not expect any real changes, but the close up experience with the ground has been enhanced and after a bit of "getting used to", I really do prefer it over 2020.

Here a recent flight just off the coast of Vancouver Island in the F33 Bonanza.. notice the lighting..

It's kinda like your own choice. Barring some bug that deeply affects you personally for some reason (some people have that happen, not much you can do then), the rest depends on how you want to see it. Reading internet comments is the same - you can choose to identify with the positive lot, or the negative lot. I personally am mostly positive and like to ascribe positive intent to the developers. Some others are the opposite. It's just whatever comes naturally to you.

Objectively, 2024 has never been better - everyone will agree on that. I don't think anyone will say that it was much better six months ago (yes some bugs are regressions, but overall? never better).

But some will say it has improved from -100 to -50 and is therefore still garbage!

For the most part you'll be impressed with MSFS 2024 SU4 ... there are still other issues that I doubt will be fixed in MSFS 2024 ... maybe MSFS 2028?  These are:

  • Intelligent path finding (vehicles/ships/aircraft) to prevent them moving thru other objects.
  • Being able to jump out of one vehicle/aircraft/boat/etc. into another.
  • Ocean elevation issues that cause water walls/cracks.
  • Fix all 2D cutout bridges.
  • Better AI to determine obelisk tree vs. real tree.
  • Much further shadow LOD so that rendering of shadows isn't so obvious and "wave" like.

It's hard to pin down, but MSFS FOV just seems off ... always in a fishbowl ... like living in a wide angle lens even when on Zoom's in to adjust, still feels like I'm living in a bubble instead of on top of the bubble ... if that makes any sense?

You WILL still have to use your blind eye, but it is getting better ... slowly but surely.  BUT, MSFS 2024 is better than MSFS 2020 in just about every way.

EDIT: some of the shipping and water issues (the ships look awesome ... great job SeaFront Simulations):
