I also upped my shadows to 4096 in settings.txt to smooth out the cockpit shadowing. Couldn't do that before either.

Interesting, will have to try that ... thanks.

  • I've seen a substantial increase in FPS from the scenery changes in this, especially on large scenery areas.

  • Paging @DeltaWho: That is something I've NEVER seen before! 🙂 X-Plane 12.4b + Orbx TrueEarth Great Britain South over London downtown + Zibo 4K @ 2560x1080 Max World Objects, Max

  • Well what a nice surprise. Christmas has come a little early today even if its beta. 😁

Really enjoying the 12.4 Beta. The biggest issue right now is ATC:

1) For AI aircraft, constant - “you are on the ground in the middle of the flight. Services terminated.” Say what?

2) On several flights, ATC issues an instruction, such as “Fly heading 260”, then entirely forgets about you and doesn’t pass you to the next controller. Nor can you issue any of the normal requests, only Repeat Last Transmission and Radio Check. Which then triggers a “You violated instructions” upon landing. On the last flight, after that, I contacted Ground and requested taxi to gate. It issued taxi instructions with a hold short of RWY XX and contacting Tower. But at hold short point, it doesn’t actually give you option to check in with tower, taxi line interrupted and… do whatever. ATC just kind of abandoned me in the midst of taxiing.

Hopefully they resolve this as ATC in 12.3 was spectacular and this never happened. Not upset cause it IS a beta, but just sharing observations.

Just wanted to add that as I continue to test addon aircraft things are mostly behaving very well.

still haven’t done anything beyond very basic & short VFR A-B flights.

what I do notice in a few of them is an intermittent stutter/pause. On one, the DWS M-346, its frequent enough that its unflyable.

this is with Orbx TrueEarth WA and 3rd party KAWO (both are XP11 versions), so not sure.

Need to test back in the v12 TE GB & airport. Also in some major metro with Default scenery.

All in all, still VERY happy that the coding work they’ve been doing is this solid on 12.4b1 👍

Is anyone else experiencing the weird ATC behavior I described above? Also... 12.4 is still in Beta, right? It doesn't say that on the title screen as it launches.

If you havnt missed it yet, or havnt guessed, ATC will always being in beta, doesnt matter what ver of Xplane is released, quiet often its not even mentioned in release notes though things get fixed broken. Always in development ATC.

I do not use AI and have never seen ATC exhibit the behavior you've described in 12.4. The only major bug I am aware of is an ATC center controller sending you into an infinite hold because it can not find a usable runway. In that case, you need to cancel IFR and request a landing fromm the field's approach or tower controller.

ATC & Radio

  • Updated voice packs to AIRAC 2511
  • Implemented wind corrections for all “Fly heading” instructions
  • Added auto-checkin option to ease unattended flights
  • Improved altitude callouts for flight-following with STAR procedures
  • ATC text dialogs now include spoken equivalents
  • Fixed crash related to departure change requests (XPD-17077)
  • Improved transmitter ranges for ATIS and tower radios to match real-world performance
  • New option to check in automatically while being on-route and set altimeter/transponder. This will not automate the check-in to your final destination, or non-coordinated handoffs.
  • Various ATC improvements

The point here being, we usually cram as much info as we can into the release notes.

Which is still way too little. Ahem.

Yes we know but some things are missed.

So it seems so far that disabling AI aircraft makes this "ATC abandonment" issue go away. 2 flights in so far, and no issues. So, it seems that enabling AI aircraft will cause ATC to bug out on you at least 50% of the time. (Probably more like 70%)

I was doing some scenery comparison work in 12.4B and using the Default VisionJet.

Once I got the scenery right, I flipped over to the (new to me) ToLiss A340 in the same scenario, and y'know what...?

...not only does it seem to work fine, but it actually runs exactly the same FPS as the VisionJet!!!! Now THAT is a well optimized airliner! 🙂
