"Islanders are being advised to stay at home tomorrow evening as Storm Goretti is forecast to bring gusts of up to 90mph to Jersey.

Jersey Met has issued a red weather warning, with violent storm force 11 winds forecast.

The storm’s most dangerous phase is expected from Thursday evening, coinciding with a late-evening high tide that raises the risk of storm surge, coastal flooding and violent seas

Government advice is for islanders to stay at home from 8pm on Thursday until the early hours of Friday morning – and to stay away from the coast.

Jersey Airport also confirmed it is due to close early at 6pm on Thursday evening"

Looks like it could be 100 mph gusts in Cornwall. Strongest for years.

Snow and rain in places too, so multi hazard event.

Looks like 90 to 99 mph winds for us in Jersey. Garden furniture is now locked up in shed. 😏

I used to like walking out on the pier at St Peter’s port to watch the waves in stormy weather when I was down in the Channel Islands. I’d probably give it a miss tonight though!

I’ve got issues of my own tonight here in the Peak District with up to 30cm of snow forecast to start falling shortly. 
 

I’ve just flown the jet back from the US into London overnight then driven home to get back before the snow hits and all the Passes into my valley get shut down, option B would be the train but according to the radio they’re closing my local train line down as a precaution. Likewise the nearby “Snake Pass” is being closed preemptively from 6pm.

Just got home in time at 17:30. 
 

An early night for me , it’s been a long day, unfortunately the schools are probably going to be closed so the pesky kids will be at home in the morning waking me up!

We're in Jersey now, but yes, the breakwater to the lighthouse was where I used to watch the Guernsey airshow. Castle is nice too. I bet the boats in the marina have all been moved. With a high tide and stormy weather it used to flood the street, to Marks and Spencer door step.

That's about a foot isn't it. I guess your valley will be isolated for a while. No snow in the Channel Islands, quite rare here. Although we did have 10 minutes of snow the other day, didnt settle, though.

I was right in the middle of the Great Storm way back in October 1987. You know, the one that Michael Fish told everyone not to worry about  I was at my parent's flat in London at the time. I remember the windows rattling like crazy for quite some time, and then........it stopped. I looked out of the window, and I saw a single cloud drifting past the Moon. A short time later, the howling winds started again. The eye of the storm must have passed directly over us.

😁 We use both. Miles per hour in cars and road signs still. For precise measurements I use metric and for course measurements feet and inches. Our rulers and tape measures still have both. 

I guess it depends on age for some things. At 68 (on Saturday) I'm very familiar with feet and inches.

Yeah, it makes sense that older folks in the UK still retain some vestiges of the old system.

We actually use both here as well.  Our rulers and tape measures have had both markings for as long as I can remember.  We learn the metric system in school, and of course for any science/engineering/technical/medical studies at university, but we still don't use it in everyday life here.  We used it in the military to some extent, for example expressing distances as "clicks"for kilometers instead of miles.

It would make life easier if we finally just switch to the metric system.  It gets tedious, for example, when converting recipe measurements from other countries from grams and milliliters into American/British cups, ounces, tablespoons, etc.  I also have to have tools that are both SAE and metric depending on what bolt or nut I need to turn.
