P-51D Mod Hefty Update

Featured Replies

This works with the 2020 Reno P51 or the native 2024 default P-51.

This mod received a significant update recently, with a from-scratch flight model.  And a lot more...  I really enjoy flying it now (2024).  It's got the required gentle rudder pedal dance on takeoff but is very controllable and agile, and the landing behavior is VASTLY improved.

There's also a version with the WT GNS430W for increased situational awareness.

Please check out the details here (I have no affiliation with this project but I just enjoy the P-51)

(I know pictures don't show flight models very well but.... just two to get you in the mood!)

Well, ZachB has made my Civilian Mustang dreams come true! I'm hoping he will publish his mod.  It does require the C172 analog gauge from the Premium Deluxe pack, the (free) Carenado Piper Dakot

He's working on some refinements and added a second 650 near the AP so it will crossfill a flight plan.

The same developer has released a similar mod for the default Texan as well IIRC.

Thanks for the heads-up. I had pretty much given up on the 51 in 2024. This breathes new life into it, for sure!

It was a disaster before 1.5 - I mean he did a nice job with what he had, but the new CFD flight model is a huge positive.  Of course there's more than just the flight model.  I'm looking into some instrument changes if possible to give it a little more capability.  I'd love to get a GTN 650xi in place of the GNS430 (easier to manipulate in the sim with touch).  And I'd like to see an HSI for some approach capability.  Ehhh... throw in a GFC500 AP for those longer flights as well - but that's really pushing it hehe.

Thank you for the advice. I will try it asap!

Best regards,

Thank you!

I am yet to find a decently modeled WW2 prop in MSFS ... I hope this one chganges my mind !

Tried this thing just for few TO and landings, it's interesting. But landing is more difficult than the take off, it should be the contrary.

Missing the PMDG DC6 in MSFS 2024 (she's here, but...).

Where do I put this file that I downloaded.  I tried putting in the 2024 Community folder and got an "unsuspected error"  message.

Disregard.  I didn't download the Main File.

I've found it the other way around.  But did you have a crosswind?  I only had light winds when I was flying before.

Haven’t flown it in ages, but the FIS Spitfire is quite well regarded - used as a trainer for IRL Spitfire flying!

Mehhh ... I own it, but honestly don't think it is that good, other than the graphics...

Compared to Spitfires in either IL-2 or DCS, or even AoT, leaves a lot ot be desired IMO...

I gave a go to this P-51. It's decent yes, surely better than the ASOBO default, but compared to the P51 / Tf51 in DCS or even in IL-2 ... 😞

Youn can't compare combat sim vs. civilian sim, in my experience I see that the combat sim airplanes generally lack realism in landings, take off, engine management, and a flight model that consent you to have a lot of energy. Just compare the A2A and the DCS P-51: completely different airplanes. In MSFS24 I find a good without bullets compromise.

Energy retention in vertical maneuvers is very well done in DCS and IL-2 Great Battles, and even in Aces of Thunder.

With the sucessive updates the damage due to overstress in these combat sims was also made very realistic.

One of the reasons I stopped using the A2A p51d was how disappointing it's flight dynamics felt compared to the DCS p51, starting with the transition from ground to flight during the takeoff...

I remember I could climb at 75° full throttle and observe almost no prop effects until I was in a stall, which is totally unrealistic...

The prop aircraft in MSFS even with the new CFD enabled like in this p51 mod don't feel much better unfortunately🥴
