WASM, what does it mean?

Featured Replies

Can anybody tell me why this happened just now?

I got the first one at KTEB in the A2A Aerostar just sitting at parking with the plane off when I brought up the EFB. So I quit 2024, rebooted the PC and then I got the second screen also at KTEB.

I have no idea what to do now. Is it bad? Do I have to reinstall?

It means the aircraft code crashed while running. A restart of the flight will fix it.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

Thanks, it took two restarts but I made a good flight on the third try.

But why did it crash? This has never happened before.

I'd probably ask on A2A Discord.  Or their forums.

WASM is absically a compiler for C++ code, a lot of devs use it like TDS, PMDG, A2A etc

Hey Jack,

This actually happened to me too. It turned out to be outdated or incompatible WASM files (probably from airports or aircraft that haven’t been updated to match the current sim or aircraft version).

What I did:

  • Important: don’t delete the WASM folder itself — only delete everything inside it
  • Deleted the Rolling Cache as well
  • Restarted the sim

After that, the issue was completely gone and I kept a backup just in case, but once I confirmed everything was working fine, I deleted it permanently.

Thanks, but where is the WASM folder?

Microsoft Store / Game Pass version: C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\WASM

Much appreciated sir, thank you.

WASM = WebAssembly Module.

Most complex aircraft in MSFS use it in one form or another. To put it simply it is a sandbox which allows developers to use languages like C++ to code various avionics and systems. Some like PMDG and IniBuilds use it extensively for almost all their aircraft systems. Others like Fenix use it only as a handle to link to their external application.

... It's meant to provide some level of code isolation and security ... unfortunately when things go bad on the WASM front it's very likely the rest of the sim will go down with it or not be functional.

My introduction to it was with building websites, however, as in MSFS it's usage is local also.  Supports all the usual options AOT, JIT, and interpreted.  For MSFS 2024 I believe it's AOT (ahead-of-time) compile and MSFS 2024 has it's own WASM runtime component.

It's also intended to allow the same systems logic to work across different platforms (XBOX, PS5, PC).

The WASM penalty (despite what Asobo claim) is slower than if it were native C++ code ... can be as much as 2X slower.  But it's mostly restricted to aircraft systems/instruments so less critical to actual FPS.

If you are having issues with aircraft systems, you can try clearing the WASM cache located:

MS Store: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.Limitless_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\WASM

Steam: %APPDATA%\Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024\WASM

From a PC flight simmer, WASM is pointless for my needs and just slows things down and adds a layer of development complexity not needed or wanted.

Other platforms like XP12 don't use WASM.

I think he gave you the 2020 folders.

Rob gave you the correct folders for 2024, which is what you said you were flying.
