  1. Nice to see you and your enthusiasm around again Mitch! I have to say the latest two betas have reignited my enthusiasm too!
  2. For what it is worth I' ve noticed the same-except 32 runs out memory rapidly with what I would consider essential graphics settings.
  3. I am running on a 4 year old i7 920 2.67 ghz. 32 bit (didn't for the the first 8 months or so) crashes every time with an out of memory error. 64 bit runs fine. Only problem is reality xp gps only runs 32 bits-I'm caught between a rock and a hard place.... Also interested in this traffic add on but not interested in tweaking/writing flight plans for the whole world. Will wait for the random or better than that an ultimate traffic type of deal.
  4. Are you running 64 bit or 32? I get a similar out of memory error pretty much whenever I run 32 bit but don't get is with 64. This started about 7 months ago-did not have a problem before that. 64 bit runs fine.
  5. I am not putting any blame. Merely stating that any pilot who uses a sim as an ifr trainer will find xplane64 Pretty non useful until a current rw gps emerges. As for 32 bit-the other problem is my desktop aviator gps hardware seems only to work with the default gps which is useless. Again, no blame- just a fact.
  6. It really isn't about FSX-interesting that some want to always turn the discussion that way. I have always used sims to help my rw flying which I started in 1989. A trainer needs to be able to simulate reasonably what one finds in rw to be useful as a trainer. Right now with the plausible world, a lack of ability to get legal photo scenery for my area of the world, and a lack of landmarks xplane is not useful for Vfr flight practice in my area of the world. Having moved to an area of the world that has very complex airspace, this would be most useful. Yes I would be most happy if either a pay ware person, or freeware could take care of this. It hasn't happened yet. It really is that simple- has nothing to do with another sim. Actually the potential deal breaker for me may end up being the ifr department. I hope this is not correct but from my reading the Reality XP gps being 32 bit will not be compatible with 64 bit xplane. If this is te case, and no one steps up to the plate with a current ifr gps, either pay ware or lm, xplane will be unable to be a useful ifr simulator for me. As for flight dynamics, I found xplane not useful for the last 9 months or so. With the latest beta I now once again find the fm's credible and non bad habit producing. Game like? I've never used a sim that way except when I was not a pilot -from 1981-89. I like many owners here hope xplane can grow into the useful sim we can use in a useful way-sooner than later.
  7. MdMax-I've added tons of freeware and pay ware stuff but the experience in this area is still lacking. I have been waiting for more payware to make up for this but it still hasn't appeared-a great opportunity for someone. Not sure why you brought up FS again, but yes the default and payware both do a better job presently.
  8. I got into flying 24 years ago solely because I liked the view from above-so I am with Greg on this one. Even though flying the last 15 years out of 24 almost exclusively ifr it is very, very rare that a filed ifr trip is exclusively ifr, or even mostly ifr-especially when covering 500-600 nm per leg.. With landings/flights in all US states I also have seen most of the landmarks the US offers-and there are many, many. When I flew over Mt. Rushmore the 2nd time on an ifr flight plan I asked if I could do a few 360's around it to get some good pictures-atc granted this even this was not that long after 9/11 . Hollywood sign, Avalon ballroom, Seattle space needle, Renn Center in Detroit, Chicago landmark architecture, the pyramid in Memphis, Niagara falls-the big crosses in the hills of Indiana, meteor crater in Arizona, the cotton/rice fields in Missouri -could go on and on-and always got great shots/movies of them all from the plane. This is what makes flying for me. Right now a little frustrating that flying vfr in my area of the world now I get lost -cause there are no landmarks and everything looks great but all the same! For vfr flying landmarks are most important-why they are marked as reporting points on vfr charts. Some good photo scenery would help in this area-but as of now there is none in my area. I haven't seen anyone else report this but since the new beta most of the quirky fm problems that made the sim unusable for me the last 9 months seem to have been corrected and I am back to a positive fm experience as when xplane 10 first came out. A great step! I hope the scenery part can come together likewise-sooner than later, and another issue I haven't seen reported yet that could be a permanent deal stopper for me. It is getting there though-so much positive going on!
  9. Missions IMHO were one of the most misunderstood underused and powerful feature of FSX. I had visions of training scenerios such as in every issue of flying magazine where a pilot is thrown into an unexpected emergency situation. I did one free mission which was an instructional tour flight in a twin flying over a beautiful spot of the US with rw operations and an unexpected emergency thrown in at the end. Someone was working on instructional flights-lessons on flying particular aircraft properly. I don't know what happened to them. Perhaps the reason they never reached their potential is "sandbox" flying is more popular. Missions however have/had the power to make any sim into a very useful rw training device. At least you don't have to pay a second person to throw unexpected situations at you, which largely surviving rw flying is about.
  10. Try the new beta-seems to have fixed most of this in my short trials.
  11. I love scenery as much as the next and wish for it sooner than later but is it just me or has the fm and many of the complaints which left xplane basically unusable for me the last few months been drastically improved?
  12. When FSX was released in 2006 I used the default because that was all there was. Perhaps a more relevant question is why a 7 year old sim ( consider computer years = dog years) is still being compared/ mentioned at all to a 1.5 year old one? Is that too obvious a question? :;
  13. Poll also shows a problem. I am a Ga pilot with commercial rating-therefore I am a commercial pilot.I believe what was meant was a commercial airline pilot vs. Ga pilot?
  14. My jaw dropped open when I tried this add in with dx10. Amazings shots-but then I am seeing the same
  15. I am in complete agreement with Greg above. Once I accepted that Xplane is not going to be useful for me as a home trainer I can accept it in the same way as Greg and enjoy it for its fun aspects and non serious fun flying. Carrotroot-I think Larry is speaking of certain failings that seem to be in all aircraft that have been actively pointed out in other threads.
  16. I wonder when the patches for the Carenado aircraft I purchased over 165 months ago will be coming-they still have the disclaimer: ***WARNING: This aircraft was NOT developed for X-Plane 10. It works in that platform, but it doesn t take advantage of all the new features. We will provide a patch in the future which will make it 100% compatible. They were the aicraft I enjoyed pre 64 bit...
  17. Hey jcomm-in my case did fly for real for 26 years but taking first break for multitude of reasons for at least one year if not forever. Therefore a realistic sim that allows me to retain essential skills is an even more desperate important need for me. I' ll go for the platform that gives it to me the best so hopefully if I get back in a year not much if any remedial needed. I had one such period 15 years ago and the sim at the time kept me in shape so that no remedial was needed. Of course real gps, realistic weather conditions, rw instruments, and aircraft that perform like their real counterparts need apply.....
  18. I guess a real Baron's yoke must be inaccurate too because in level flight it needs no rudder or aileron trim. A real Baron most certainly must be off because it doesn't do what xplane does ... Isn't that where it always goes back-one can see the same circle by searching old org posts on much older versions of xplane-At least since I started using xplane in the mid 90's. Yet each version has gotten a little closer to the point xplane 10 was the first I actually didn't shelve fairly quickly. Somehow though some sims seem to get it closer regardless of the joystick used and some even in xplane do-though I find I still can't use it for a useful ifr trainer....yet...still hoping....for the future.
  19. ...and thus we complete the recurring cycle since xplane 3 when I started , of speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil. Yep-must be my joystick-all of the many different models I have:; I sent a copy to my geico agent too... :lol Ps. Anyone heard from Billy V. From South Africa who was a big fan in the early days and used to banter here?
  20. Got it finally fixed-boy this was a difficult one. Thanks Manny for all your help! Now that it is working I can only praise this DesktopAviator gps the highest praises. It has removed the last bit of awkwardness of using the sim for rw training and is possibly the most useful and good value I have bought for the sim.
  21. I finally got most of the buttons to work by manually editing the fsiupc file with the command syntax, however I still can't get the power button or right outside knob to work, even entering the commands manually. The keyboard shortcuts do work from the keyboard though.
  22. I am having the problem that many of the keypresses such as ctrl f3 don't show up in fsiupc -eg. the press key box doesn't register anything when I press that key combo-however pressing the key combo from the keyboard in fs does-anyone know what is up here? Thanks!
