  1. What are your system settings? Are you running hi-res scenery? Do you have anty/much photo scenery that is enabled in your scenery.cfg? FSX is only allocated 4GB of address space so having 16GB or 8GB won't matter as long as there is sufficient memory for FSX (4GB) with the OS loaded and other programs, etc. Paul
  2. I have my OrbX folder on a different drive, outside the FSX folder. I have an EMPTY OrbX folder in the FSX folder and then mount the 'real' OrbX folder (drive or volume) to that empty folder. I do the same thing with my Addon Scenery folder. You will need to create disk volumes for each, with all the files/folders in the root directory. Essentially this new drive(volume) becomes the OrbX 'folder' or 'Addon Scenery 'folder'. Once you have created the 'external' folders(Volumes) and created the empty folders in FSX, go to My Computer, select Manage, Storage, Disk Management. Right-click on the volume for OrbX and select "Change drive letter or path". In that dialog you then select "Add" then "Mount in the empty NTFS folder" Point to your EMPTY FSX OrbX folder and click OK. Paul
  3. I tried using the contact link and form to send amessage to AVSIM but it failed for some reason. I was trying to report the following 'failure'. The Front Page Link at the top left of the Forums menu is no longer working. Instead, it takes you to the forums index page. Until yesterday it worked and took you ti the front page where one could use a single click to view the 'What's new' in the library. I hope you can restore that useful link! I received a 'bounced' message to my email address. The partial info follows: --------------------------------------- This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: ckreznor@outlook.com (ultimately generated from forum@avsim.com) host mx1.hotmail.com [65.55.92.168] SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data: 550 5.7.0 (SNT004-MC3F9) Unfortunately, messages from (209.8.161.216) on behalf of (aol.com) could not be delivered due to domain owner policy restrictions. ---------------------------------- It is rather frustrating to not be able to report an issue when the reporting software is also broken!' Paul
  4. You might try reducing the texture sizes for the AI aircraft by a factor of 2 or 4. I do that to all my aircraft that others in my group fly online and only keep the full default textures for the aircraft paints that I fly. ( I have over 70 A2A B-17G paints for the 91st Bombardment Group that I fly with ) I reduce the textures from 2048 to 1024 and add mipmaps to increase the visible range a bit on those aircraft. Paul
  5. Eddie, having a button programmed to "Pause" TIR and another to "Center" the view really helps when you want to look at something like a map, GPS screen, chart. Just look at the area you want to stay focused on and hit the Pause button to lock TIR at that point. When done, just hit the Pause button again to resume 'normal' operation. As for the Center command, if I want to extend my view in any direction I simply look in the OPPOSITE direction and hit the Center button. I can then look further in the other direction. When done, look forward and hit Center again. These operations become 2nd nature in no time. When trying to see hard to reach areas, such as the de-ice controls in my A2A B-17G, which are located down on the left side of the pilots seat, I look to the left and lean forward to move my vitual head next to the pilots left window. I then hit Pause and use the hat to look down on the floor to the de-ice switches there. After setting them, I hit Pause again, look forward and hit Center. The only time I have problems with my neck is when I am flying formation in the B-17G and the aircraft I am forming on is slightly above or below my altitude, which is normal for that sort of operation. Again, here the Center button can be used. Slouch down or sit up higher and then Center to move your eyepoint in the OPPOSITE direction. This lets me look 'under' or 'over' the window frame. I also map the left seat (F9), right seat, and two other camera views to the #2 hat switch on my X-45 stick. With a flick of my thumb I can move between the seats or other views. This operation was essential when flying the A2A B-377...going from left seat to the FE station or Navigators station or the right seat. With TIR I could often check the FE station gauges simply by looking over my virtual right shoulder just to see if I needed to go to the FE view. ( I use the HotKeySelect= ) statement added to the CameraDefinition.00x entries in the aircraft.cfg file to assign those to the hat) Without TIR one has to do a lot of keystoke or hat work to get around the VC but a combination of TIR, custom views assigned via the "View Camera x" in the FSX Controls menu and associated HotKeySelect = statements in the aircraft.cfg file make for a much smoother operation. Paul I see KDFW got a post in as I was typing mine up
  6. Actually, when you move your head with TIR, your eyes also must move, otherwise you would be looking somewhere other than where you intended to look. And depending upon your monitor screen size and how close you are to it you can look at different areas of the screen while your head remains stationary in the 'turned' position. As Ron states, using TIR becomes second nature in a short time and feels very 'natural'. I would never go back to the default hatswitch or keyboard view system ! Paul
  7. FSX has Multiplayer and always did. After the Gamespy connect was dropped one had/has the option to 'connect direct' to a remote server. This is the option that I use as I fly exclusively on the DigitalThemePark servers with the 91st Bombardment Group. Since FSX-SE does not offer a working 'connect direct' option, it is of no use to me. Flying on the servers offered by DTG is not an option or desirable. Paul
  8. As long as the "Direct Connect" multiplayer feature remains broken/disabled I have no use for SE. Also, I am not willing to have to continually 'chase the update' and wait for 3rd party developers to 'fix' their installers, etc, as a result of each SE recompile. Paul
  9. Create a 2nd User Account. That will have its own registry entries, etc. as long as you have FSX set up for a 'single user' in each account. I've done that to 'isolate' my FSX install from an fsx_se install and a P3D install. Another option, if you just want a different configuration for testing if make a COPY of fsx.exe and rename it fsx_test.exe or whatever. The make a copy of your fsx,cfg file and rename it fsx_test.cfg (if you just run the 'new' fsx_test.exe it will create a defaulr fsx_test.cfg file. You can tailor the scenery.cfg file for each fsx and simply swap them when you change from your regular fsx to the test fsx and back. Likewise, if you have FSUIPC4 you can have an INI file that is unique to each fsx exe. I have several renamed fsx.exe files...one for flying on the DTP "A" server, and other for the "B" server. The only difference is the IP of the server. This way I don't have to remember the IP's and re-enter them. I have a exe for Propliners, another for testing, etc, etc. Paul
  10. What has the price of tea in China or the price developers charge have to do with the topic of tjis thread? I'd rather not have to 'wade through' a bunch of totally unrelated posts to read those that are actually relevant to the topic at hand! Paul
  11. For me it is absolutely essential. Right up there with a registered version of FSUIPC4. Without those two 'utilities', I would not be flying FSX or P3D ! Paul
  12. The ability to "Direct Connect" to servers in Multi-Player or to another IP for Multi-Player over a LAN. Paul
  13. As I fly exclusively on line via direct connect to the DTP servers, FSX-SE in its current state is not usable. I only have it installed (on a 2nd user account) for beta testing purposes. Paul
  14. Is the Multiplayer "direct connect" feature still unusable after this last update? Until that feature is operational FSX-SE is pretty much useless for my needs. Paul
  15. For anyone that flies online on the Digital Theme Park servers or any other server that uses the "Direct Connect" funtion, FSX-SE is not an option as DTG seems to have failed to implement that feature which is 'standard' in FSX. I suspect they may have done that to force folks to use their multiplayer implementation of the old GameSpy. I only fly online on the DTP servers so FSX-SE is useless to me except as a test bed for beta testing. The same is true of my P3D V2.4 install. I never use that to actually fly on a regular basis. Paul
  16. If you wish to fly Multiplayer using "Direct Connect" to a MP Server, FSX is the only option. FSX-SE does not allow Direct Connect to an IP. Pity, as that makes it worthless for my needs! Paul
  17. I would suggest the ROOT of ANY drive other than the OS drive. D:\FSx, E:\FSX, X:\FSX..... Paul
  18. Wrong again, as seems to be the usual case with your 'contribituions' to threads. The lack of a full SDK has been deemed an issuae and was discussed in the FS Developer Forums as early as the day of the FSX-SE Steam Edition release. One need not be a developer to have reason to utilize the features present in the full SDK. As was mentioned here, ADE requires components of the SDK to be present otherwise that tool can not be used. Anyone that wishes to create a custom gauge, scenery objects for their environment, and other custom content often need the full SDK for those tasks. Just because your myopic, negative views can not see these posibilities does not mean they do not exist or are not valid. If you do not have positive or conctructive input bto a discussion, you might want to consider doing the community a great service by staying out of the discussion ! Paul (A frequent SDK user and non-developer!)
  19. I have FSX installed on a 112 GB partiton "X:" on a 240 GB SSD - X:\FSX The other 'half' of that SSD contains the Win7 Pro X64 OS. I have all the folders from my Addon Scenery folder located on another SSD partition - the J: drive. The J: Drive is mounted into the empty "X:\FSX\Addon Scenery" folder. This way I can share it with P3D and FSX-SE. I have all my OrbX regions, MGlobal, Vector and OpenLC installed on another SSD partion - my O: drive. This is mounted into the empty "X:\FSX\OrbX" folder. For P3D and FSX-SE I use 'junctions' to map the various OrbX region folders, etc into the OrbX folders for those sims after creating the Scripts and FTX Central folders and files that are unique for each sim. The region folders are 'common' so can be shared. This saves duplicating my OrbX install of 103 GB two more times. My "Q: drive" contains the OzX files and is mounted in the empty "X:\FSX\OzX" folder and also in the empty OzX folders in P3D and FSX-SE. I have various special scenery files located on my Z: drive and simply point FSX to those locations when I wish to add them to my Scenery.cfg. These are mission scenery files for the 91st Bombardment Group missions and related files...special purpose gauges, etc. I keep my 91st Bombardment Group aircraft (Mostly A2A warbirds) on my Y: Drive. AI aircraft and other seldom used SimObjects are located on various drives and their declarations in the fsx.cfg file "SimObjects" section is either enabled or commented out to effectively remove them from the sim as desired. P3D V2.4 in located on "R:" - R:\P3D FSX-SE is the real 'bastage install' located on my "L" Drive. L:\Steam Library\steamapps\common\FSX In all, I have 18 "Drives" located on 5 physical drives. Two SSD's, 240GB and a 500 GB, plus 2 X 500 GB 7200 RPM Caviars and a 2 TB 7200 RPM Caviar. Paul
  20. I have two issues with FSX-SE that prevent me from pursueing it as a 'replacement' for mt well-behaved FSX install. The first is that I can not "Direct Connect" to the DTP servers where I do vitually ALL my flying. Until that is resolved FSX-SE is dead in the water for me. Also, I was seeing excessive stuttering that I could not trace to the source...1 to 5 second stutters every couple of minutes. Removing some of my OrbX addons appeared to help some but that is not a workable option for me (I have pretty much all the regions except Wales and Norway, Global, Global Vector and Europe OpenLC plus Pilots 2010 FSX mesh.) I also observed that at least one of my BGL files that I created to remove a lake in the middle of Bassingbourne (UKBA) that appeared in that custom airport when OrbX Europe was added does not work in FSX-SE. The very same (shared) scenery.cfg files in both FSX and FSX-SE are yielding different results. FSX-SE was also reporting a lot of 'missing textures' when I set the flag in the CFG file to show those. The textures were actually present and FSX did not report them as 'missing', so there appears to be some incompatibllity at a very basic level. At the moment I am too busy with FSX projects to be able to spend any time with FSX-SE to identify the source(s) of these issues. Having a sim that better handles VAS is definitely desirable and I hope that all the issues I have with FSX-SE can be run down so that I can take advantage of the improvements noted so far by others. Paul
  21. Very bad advice! I believe that Photo scenery will be loaded no matter WHERE you are in the world on any given flight so it would behove those with photo scenery areas to disable them if not actually flying there! Using process monitor I have seen scenery files being loaded that were half way around the world from where I was flying for no apparent reason! Paul
  22. IMHO not just 'important'...but ESSENTIAL! Paul
  23. I believe the OpenLC wants to be above the Global Vector entries if I recall correctly what I read over on the FTX Forums. Paul
  24. All my highly customized control mappings via FSUIPC4 work in FSX-SE as they did in FSX. Matter of fact Im just copied my 5549 line FSUIPC4.ini file from FSX over into FSX-SE "Modules" folder and went flying. One needs tha latest version of FSUIPC4 to use with FSX-SE. .Version 4.938a. Paul
  25. I have also installed the A2A J3, C172, C182, both P-51's, B-17G, P-40, Spitfire and the B-377 COTS. So far I have only flown the two P-51's but I do not anticipate any major issues with the other A2A aircraft. By temporarily changing the registry key for the FSX setup location to point to the FSX-SE folder I was able to run the installers as though I was installing into FSX. My primary 'incombatability' so far has been the inability to connect to the Digital Theme Park servers via the FSX-SE Multiplayed "Direct Connect" which is what I use in FSX and the DTP servers are the only ones I fly on.
