  1. A Business Systems Analyst in IT. In my younger days, I almost made ends meet doing radio sports play-by-play. Started simming on the Apple IIe with SubLogic back in Elementary School. I still have the floppies! Now I build my own home PC's customarily to accommodate Flight Sim!
  2. Has anyone found (or is working on) updated scenery for KORD to incorporate the new runway and control tower? Presumably modified using ADE, as opposed to updated commercial scenery. I've been searching, but uncovered nothing so far. Thanks.
  3. On a budget, here's what I've pieced together on pcpartpicker.com ... http://pcpartpicker.com/user/mesaba116/saved/47L2 Any general thoughts are appreciated, and I have a specific question about overclocking and cooling -- If I want to take the i5-3570K just slightly up over 4 GHz, would air cooling be sufficient? I don't intend to go crazy and push the OC, so I don't necessarily want to buy liquid cooling that might not be needed. Anyway, comments are welcome. Thanks Kevin
  4. 10/28C opened this morning. It would be fun to use the new RWY.
  5. So I'm reading into your answer that they are supposed to be there? I was contemplating uninstalling/reinstalling 1.9.7.2 to clean up those entries (because if I recall correctly it seems the number of entries grew with each upgraded version. But if they are supposed to be there, I'll just leave them alone.
  6. I have about a dozen entries in my FSX profile for NVIDIA Inspector 1.9.7.2 The titles are all in Hex -- like this > 0x00000040, and the Settings Values are a mixture of hex, numeric, and words. Are these supposed to be there, and if not, how do I get rid of them? Thanks.
  7. I wouldn't mind doing it. I used to work in radio, but somehow ended up in IT. I've done voice-over work.
  8. I validated I can also see the Topics again on a 2nd box, so looks like there was a change either via MS updates or server side.
  9. Perhaps there is a magician at work! Today, on IE8, I can once again see the forum topic titles!! Whether IE8 is supported or not, something changed. I'll check on another PC to see to see if I have the same behavior.
  10. How good is default ATC at giving you the correct sort of approach? I took a 738 into Thunder Bay last week, and got cleared for a visual approach, even though conditions were overcast at 2000. He also cleared me for a 5300 foot runway. (I needed 5301, as it turned out). It was a 3rd party AFCAD -- not sure if that would play into the instructions I got or not.
  11. Insert clip from Monty Python, "And now for something completely different" here. Eeks - forgot to delete system specs -- sorry - will do it now!
  12. Affirmative! I always seek out AFCADS created by Ray. I'm very appreciative of his work.
  13. GPU utilization (from Inspector) had max of 84%, but hovered between 44-47% on flight from PHL to EWR, with up to 192 AI a/c in the sky. Aircraft shadows are still turned on, as well.
  14. AA - Setting is 8xS AA Transparency Supersampling 2x sparse grid Supersampling Anisotropic filtering setting 16x (I tried to attach a screenshot, but couldn't figure out how.) I'll monitor GPU utilization and report back. Thanks.
  15. I suspect you are right. What I'm trying to do is quantify the performance hit (is that an art or a science?). With my current set up, I have frames locked at 30, which I get very consistently after climb out, or if there are few clouds. With heavier clouds, or with lots of other traffic, it can dip down to the mid-to-upper teens, but still mostly smooth. (Maybe from the 10,000RPM HD dedicated to FS, or the Nvidia Inspector settings? Not sure. I run UT2 at 90% commerical, 5% GA REX cloud textures limited to 2048 res by Texture Max Load Editor, with cloud layers limited to 5 by ASE. If I could quantify the loss, and potential trade-offs I'd need to make, that would be the best outcome. If it's too much of a guess, and I'd risk FSX running like a slide show, maybe I'll opt for the RC Aircraft. Thanks for your input!
  16. Hi all I've got about $175 in birthday money (at Amazon.com), and I'm contemplating finally getting a widescreen monitor (or buying an RC airplane). I've currently got a 19", running at 1280x1084 (see signature below for details). 1. I generally understand that the more pixels rendered, the higher the performance hit. But is there a way to translate that into FPS loss and/or increased stutters? 2. Through earlier searches, I think I'd be looking for the best combination of monitor size and response time. Does anyone have any suggestions for what would work well in the $175 range, given the rest of my current set-up? Thanks for your feedback! 17. One additional note -- I also upgraded to Nvidia Inspector 1.9.5.11, because I was going to review my settings after the new install. It appears there were a couple of settings in Inspector that had some SLI settings that weren't default in the FSX profile. I don't have SLI, and I switched them back to default -- and things got a little better. Maybe there are other settings in Inspector I need to take a closer look at?
  18. Thanks for the advice -- I bought a GTS 450 locally at Micro Center. But now I fear I've hosed things up a bit. FSX was running fine on the new card. I noticed I had multiple GE Force drivers on my PC, so I used Driver Sweeper to delete all Nvidia display drivers. After installing the 295.73 drivers -- I also deleted the old .cfg file to force a new one. Ever since, there are stutters, texture tears and lock ups in FSX. Every time I try to modify the display settings in FSX, the changes don't stick -- they automatically revert back to Ultra High across the board. I've attempted to revert back to the old .cfg file, as well, but with no better results. Any idea what's going on? Thanks!Any idea what's going on?
  19. Thanks -- I don't have the cash to build new right now. Let me frame it up a little differently. Just to get me back up and running for the next few months, can you think of a card that would give me better performance than my 7600GT, but is cheap, so I can save $$ for the new build?Again, thanks for your input!
  20. Hi all -- I discovered it has 5 blown capacitors tonight on my 7600GT. It's served me surprisingly well in it's five-plus years of service, but it's time to move on.I'm looking for advice on replacing my relic of a card, , and about what other components I might upgrade in my current set-up (see sig), and then move to a new build, maybe around Xmas time (which would coincide with a move to the Win7 OS).My thoughts were to buy a replacement video card, along with upgraded memory and PSU (Enermax 565W)right now. Is that a sound approach?A couple observations: My MOBO will only take DDR2 memory. Is that going to be a performance issue when I do a new build? Maybe if I upgrade the memory, go with some cheaper DDR2 to get up to 4GB, and buy DDR3 when I do a new build? Any opinion on that, and associated recommendations on what memory to get? Any suggestions on a video card that would be a good one to serve in the current build, and then swap into a new build later. I'm assuming I should upgrade the PSU, because power calculator has me up over 500W with my current set-up (with only 256 MB on the video card). Your opinions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  21. I just updated to 1.9.5.7, but am still sitting at the 270.61 drivers (I'm assuming that's why I don't see the Frame limiter in Inspector?)Anyway, I'm still running a 256MB 7600 GT, and wondering if a card this old gets any benefit updating the Nvidia drivers past a certain point. Any opinions.I'm not getting terrible performance with the internal FSX frame limiter set to 30 (although it dips to 12-15 (smooth) FPS in heavily populated airports).Again, the question is -- any benefit with a 7600 GT to continue to update to the latest Nvidia drivers? Thanks.
  22. Is Inspector supported for the 7600 GT. I tried to install it once, but can't get it to work at all. It's been a while, but generally I recall everything on the Inspector interface was grayed out.
  23. I've still got many of the old versions sitting in my storage room. It would be kind of fun if I could find hardware that could run it and jump back in time.
