Dc6's flight model?
So as I understand it, the basis of the theory is that PMDG used a workaround for xplane whereby they found out how to make xplane's flight model behave like FSX's. Then they could just do what they'd do for FSX. That would be a bit rubbish, but as I understand it PMDG have said that this isn't the case. Great.

Plane jumps up in the air on scenario load
Hi Kyle. 368.22 released 23/5/2016 I had a message in Event Viewer yesterday that "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding" But I've also had xplane crash with the nvidia module shown as the fauling application. Thanks.

Plane jumps up in the air on scenario load
Thanks for the answer Kyle. I'm using HD Mesh v3 and the airport from the download link in the tutorial. My simulator crashed on the flight where I'd entered the flight plan so that might be it. (Seem to be having difficulties related to nvidia causing xplane to crash. I've backed my rendering settings off slightly after setting them to mirror yours when we were talking about lighting, and also made sure my graphics driver was up to date. Hopefully that'll fix it) Thanks for the quick reply above.

Plane jumps up in the air on scenario load
Thanks Kyle. I tried it with and without runway contours on but it happened in both cases. Anyway, I have a plan B now btw, does the flight plan in the GPS get saved as part of the scenario? Thanks

Plane jumps up in the air on scenario load
So I put the plane on 28L at Portland. I click the Scenario 1 button after copying the tutorial file across. The plane jump up in the air about 10 feet and falls back down again. Smoke pours out of the engines. It doesn't always happen but seems to quite frequently. Presumably I'm the only one this is happening to as I haven't seen any other threads on it. Am I doing something silly? Thanks

Just completed tutorial one, Brrriiillliant!
I was just up in the air myself. Smiling a lot. Hadn't bothered with the a/p yet so was just pointing it in the right direction manually.

xcamera definitions for DC6
Hi Onno, that's exactly why I use it as well and matches my experience with it. "If only someone made EzDok for xplane". Its great how you can have as many categories as you like. The virtual walkaround that you can setup is nice as well (define a number of external cameras and have xplane move either manually or automatically between them. I am going to try setting the number keys to show various cameras with the DC6 though. Great addon.

xcamera definitions for DC6
Apologies, I should have made clear that this thread was a request rather than an answer, perhaps by including a question mark in the title. I can't find how to add it now. Anyway, here's my post: Anyone got a nice set of cameras set up for the DC6 that they'd like to share? I've setup a few views but I'm not the best at it. Thanks.

Lights
So I was playing about with plugins and found that if I turned enough off then the lights worked. "Ooo, must be an incompatability....." Disabled xsaitekpanels and it worked. Enabled xsaitekpanels and the lights only work if the Battery Master Switch is On. :Big Grin: I'd assumed that since everything else on the flight deck seemed to be working (on a very rough glance about) that the electrics were on. Presumably they weren't. (I'd pressed Cold & Dark and then Ready to Taxi as above). Happy now, I love aircraft lights and I know that's one thing that PMDG do well here and on other aircraft. Thanks for your help.

System Question
Bit harsh Felipe but for flight simming unfortunately its true. I see the AMD Radeon HD 8650G graphics has no dedicated graphics memory. The minimum recommended in the DC6 manual is 1GB on the graphics card with 4GB recommended. I was away from home with a reasonable laptop for a few years and I appreciate its frustrating. Good luck.

Lights
Lol, okay. I'll add my name to the bottom, sorry for causing trouble. Unfortunately I still have the lighting issue. I have textures Very High, have turned on HDR lighting and set HDR anti-aliasing to FXAA. I've restarted xplane after changing those settings. I click "Cold & Dark" then "Ready for taxi". I click the various lighting preset buttons and I can see the rotaries move. But there doesn't seem to be any lighting (I've tried it at xplane's twilight time of day). I downloaded soon after it was released and I gather there's been at least 1 update since that time (adding the scenario file) so I'll re-download in case anything else has changed. Should my sequence of clicks above have produced working lights or did I need to get the FE to do something first? I'm using 64 bit xplane on Steam. I'm using Windows 10. My graphics card is a GTX780. Thanks.

Lights
See now I've changed my display name by mistake and am not allowed to change it again for 6 months. I hadn't realised that this was an official PMDG forum though sorry. I just wondered if anyone knew why my lights didn't work. Thanks to Felipe for what will presumably resolve this for me. Thanks to PMDG for coming to xplane. I bought the DC6 within a couple of minutes of seeing that it was out and am looking forward to getting to know it a lot better.

Lights
I can't seem to get the lights to work. I set the aircraft to one of the preset states (those buttons work) but the 3 light presets don't seem to work for me, or the rotaries that I've tried in the cabin. Its probably me being daft but anyone else seen this? I did try doing it in total darkness in Thanks.

Dovetail - Anyone biting?
I bought it. Played it for an hour or so last night. Look at the price. Its better than FSX out of the box but not as good as FSX with all the best addons. As expected. The lessons are fun, if a bit frustrating. (On the landing lesson the instructor let me stall while turning the corner onto final and crash. As with FSX it just has checkpoints at various points in the lesson and if you don't meet the parameters at that point then the instructor stops the lesson) Fun though and although a Super Cub wouldn't have been my first choice, the model seems pretty well done I think.

New preview shots
Very good, but its based on the FSX code, they've said that. Why do Lockheed Martin not get the same criticism? Froogle in his review was (as I remember it) pretty enthusiastic about P3Dv3,.despite the the main selling point of v3 seeming to be a major bug fix which made better use of memory. Well, Flight School shouldn't suffer from OOM either, and it doesn't cost $200.

New preview shots
Oops, reading that again it sounded like I was saying Flight School is a rubbish idea. I wasn't, I've pre-ordered it and I'm looking forward to it. What I was saying was that there's no need for me to spend any more than 15 quid on Dovetail's 64 bit flight simulators over the next 6 months or so, and I can continue buying add-ons for existing simulators if I want. Eventually DFS should be announced and we can all see how things look and what add-on developers they've convinced to start making add-ons for it.

New preview shots
Avidean: Flight School is standalone, with some basic improvements over fsx and no chance to add others. So its cost is 15 quid. I'm planning on continuing to buy xplane add-ons, although probably not fsx or p3d ones. As for 64 bit (for Flight School and DFS), I'm glad they've made the move now to get it out of the way. Making something 64 bit isn't going to instantly make it have better graphics for example though.

DTG Flight School - Approach & Landing Lesson
Okay, sorry about that rant just now I just wonder how people can simultaneously be a fan of P3D and yet describe (the as yet unreleased) Flight School as nothing new, just a rehash of FSX with a bit of eye candy and a few bug fixes. Regarding the video, my reaction was 'meh'. The Supercub didn't look that great and the viewpoint reminded me a little of MS Flight. Set against that, the scenery looked pretty reasonable (and surely OrbX will have put a few distinctive visual features around the airfield). There were no shadows but that is way down my checklist of features I'm looking for, nice eye candy but not as important as other stuff. We've also been promised TrackIR support so the viewpoint presumably will change. I agree with Bonchie that the approach seemed rather low. I thought the instructor was reasonable in terms of presentation. I'd always planned to get the LAPL as quickly as I could and then fly the Cherokee at the airfield in the video where possible. (My reasoning for that being that I wanted to get the LAPL first. Martin had said it was optional and wouldn't prevent further progress if you didn't want to do it, so presumably you never need to touch the Supercub if you don't want to) I'd much rather they'd licensed A2A's J3 Cub than feature this Supercub, perhaps adding a proper turn coordinator, a minute hand on the altimeter and a standard radio. But its $15 so they probably weren't going to do that. All in all it looks promising I think. Oh yeah, and the compass/mission pointer thing. You can turn that off in FSX. I don't see why that wouldn't also be the case in Flight School. So if its not your bag, turn it off. Problem solved.

DTG Flight School - Approach & Landing Lesson
I don't follow. You seem to be saying that Dovetail aren't allowed to change the code. Seriously? They just hit the "Build me a 64 bit version" button and that's the end of it? I suspect its a little more complicated than that and that changing code will be necessary. Besides which Stephen from Dovetail already talked about them replacing certain parts of the simulation where needed and where convenient. And seriously. I bought P3D v2 for $200 and used it for a year or so. I've seen v3. Its not imho more than FSX that's been shined up a bit. This is a video released almost a month before initial release of Flight School. P3D has been out for several years, is a premium product and is still a 32-bit product living at least partly on people's collections of FSX payware that they still want to use. I think its too early to judge Flight School. I don't think its too early to judge P3D.

Dovetail Games Flight School Release Date: May 24, 2016
Disappointed. Especially when I misread the thread title and thought it was being released on April 24th. (I'd assumed it would be released April 29th or 30th. Happy, then Sad....). But most software projects go over budget and run late, its good that they aren't rushing this out. Also I'm trying to get to grips with Star Citizen and there's the new IXEG 737 coming out, so plenty to keep me busy.

Decision time: P3D or FSX?
Just to say (perhaps I was doing it wrong but....) I had worse performance in P3D v2 than in FSX. I bought P3D v2 and used it for a while with scenery, planes, weather etc. Then a year or so later, v3 came out and I needed another $200 to upgrade. I moved to FSX SE and the performance is better I find. I've A2A's C182 and Flight1's GTN750 that are stuck on P3D, so I can't use those. I've still plenty of other stuff to use. Anyway, my point's just that P3Dv2 still felt like an old simulator to me. (which ironically it is now).

Decision time: P3D or FSX?
Agree with the above. Additionally, I imagine LM will be keen to move to 64 bit as soon as is practical, so buying P3D now may result in it being out of date within a year or so and having similar 32-bit addon compatibility issues.
