  1. There was, but this was after a normal 4-engine takeoff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_268 I pity the captain on that flight; he made a decision based on BA ops and management consultation and then got vilified in the press for having to land for fuel just short of LHR. (Obviously they could not continue in the same aircraft after that) The trijet takeoff is fun, just watch your assym thrust and use the rudder!
  2. The main taxiway used to be a runway and is/was still (very rarely) used if the main runway is out of service. (It may be permanently a taxiway now, I am not 100% sure.) They still have the lit up X sign at either end though. Would the gpws issue a warning if you were lined up for 23L and it thought you should be aiming for the old 23R / taxiway?
  3. I got a weird GPWS warning approaching Auckland yesterday. The AP was flying, on the ILS, flaps 30 and gear down, everything looked good, then a Terrain Terrain Pull Up warning lasting maybe 10-15 seconds with a red square on the nav display terr mode near the airport. I know as a fact there are no terrain issues at AKL. (well, not right at the airport anyway) It just disappeared and everything back to normal. Only scenery used is ORBX NZ NI + VECTOR.
  4. SAA and Qantas were the only two passenger operators that ordered the 5th pod option from factory, from what I have read. There may be -F operators, or operators who converted a former SAA or QF bird to a BCF/BDSF
  5. Rolls-Royce. I would expect handling to be the same in the other two types.
  6. I think it will end up being, as Robert suggested, a calculation error somewhere. As we can see, the wings have a large range of motion and flex, and getting it 100% right would be a tricky thing, but if anyone can do it they can.
  7. I will admit I only took a quick look, Adobe reported "no results found" for the word 'ferry'
  8. If it helps, I am running at 4K with 150% scaling set for Windows 10, and do not see this white bar.
  9. Hi Guys Decided to do a 3-engine ferry flight after reading about them online. With number two failed and shutdown, have to say, she flies beautifully on 3, the only difference is on takeoff I brought 1 and 4 up to TOGA first, and then slowly brought 3 up to TOGA as we passed about 80kt where the rudder could keep us on the centerline. Once airborne, apart from a bit of rudder trim, the handling was just like a normal flight really. Now I could not find any hard numbers or procedure in the FCOM so just did what I had read online. Kudos to Boeing and PMDG for this level of handling and realism respectively. (To those who may say that would not be done in real life, it certainly is. obviously no passengers and reduced weights and so forth, but it is done, including over the pacific!)
  10. load the plane with zero fuel and payload, note the empty weight, then load max payload, subtract empty weight from payload, thats your max payload.
  11. To think that one single gauge or PFD these days consumes far more processing power than that entire flight sim..
  12. http://www.boeing.com/assets/pdf/commercial/airports/acaps/747_4.pdf Best I can offer...
  13. Some airlines use public available fonts, such as Lufthansa (Helvetica Black and variants), others use custom fonts, like BA (Mylius) and EK (Not sure, I just call it EK font) If you know where to look or ask, you can sometimes get these fonts, but I am not sure on the legality of it. I have the BA and EK fonts but probably would not publish an airplane using them.
  14. Adam (might want to add your surname as per rules) thats a good question. It must be RNP capable, as it plies the NAT tracks that require RVSM, but it is an earlier version of the software on the NGX, which is probably about 9-10 years ahead of the 744 (Real world) I did immediately notice the VNAV seems a bit more "sloppy" than the NGX or 777, possibly because it is much bigger, but it just does not seem quite as accurate (Not saying PMDG got it wrong) I am sure this is the case for the real airplane. You are right though, I don't see a 747 doing and RNP GPS type approach like into Innsbruck or Queenstown.
  15. Bloody hell that would give Air France a run for their money. Looks like they flew it through mud... I am assuming all the crud collects at the nose door seam and then streaks back.
  16. Well, I was about to agree that it seemed "exaggerated" but after seeing that video, I can only say my respect for Boeing engineers (and PMDG) has gone up a notch. I did reduce ASN turbulence from 70 (default) to 50 however, as at 70 it was uncontrollable.
  17. Seriously, it is a giant, monstrous copper and brass contraption that sits presiding over the living room. On my first takeoff with the 747 I heard an almighty crash and almost aborted the takeoff, thinking I had just had an engine failure. Turns out the amazing bass tones of the RR engines caused it to vibrate off its mounts and almost, but not quite, decapitate the cat. (The cat was not amused) I kid you not, between the roar of the PMDG 747 and the crash of that thing, it sounded like a jet-train full of scrap metal crashing into a bell factory.
  18. No need to be sorry, you gentlemen have created a masterpiece. (The wall hanging has been relocated to another room, permanently - with the amount of 747 flying I will be doing, its likely to kill someone.)
  19. 747 is same or better for me FPS wise. No ETA on the 747-8, I believe it has not yet entered beta testing. Probably a few months at least. Perhaps mid-2017.
  20. Just look up the SAA 295 and you will see why. Combis are a bad idea and I would feel uncomfortable flying on one, and I don't believe we will ever see a new combi again, with current technology and regs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_Airways_Flight_295
  21. does not look like there is much of benefit in that hotfix unless you are running SLI. I would hold off for now until PMDG says go ahead.
  22. When I put my car aircon on full it sounds pretty much just like that. Shearing sound of air leaving the vents and ducts.
  23. Cough cough... have you met Windows 10... and Vista for that matter... I deal with random, unreproducible software problems daily. Its no fun.
  24. Armen, like is not the right word - I showed a friend of mine today whos only mildly interested in aviation and he said it gave him goosebumps and a chill up his spine at how powerful it all sounded. Like is far to mild. What you guys have done here takes simulated airplanes to a whole new level. In fact, during one of my takeoffs last night, one of my cats reared up on her hind legs and looked at the screen as if a real 747 was bearing down on her. (My THX speakers help - should be a requirement of PMDG to have good speakers) Thanks for all your work!
