  1. Norton themselves have admitted that anti-virus is not quite the protection you might think it is in general, see here, you can find it covered all over the net at the minute. As for buying a system from some essentially unknown self promoting guy on youtube, well it just never seemed like a good idea did it? As for unfinished products, again, buyer beware. I wonder if the market is rather saturated at this stage?
  2. Yeah, that saga has been running a while now, this guy Belynz did a vlog about it a while ago. Buyer beware indeed!
  3. Yeah, I think everyone is waiting for that particular offering. That'll sell in huge numbers. IXEG, the PMDG of XP!
  4. That's a tough one! I presume you've asked over at the .org? There are one or two other popular XP sites. Hit them all. They should at very least, have analytics data that might inform any decision about which field to develop in which country, where are their users based? I also wonder might Aerosoft play nice if you approached them? I imagine they'd be only too happy to help, it makes good business sense. They seem to be the main ones selling into that market and might have some figures for you. Really you can only approach those who have already sold into the market and ask them straight out how many units they've shifted. If they have any sense they'll be forthcoming knowing that the market has plenty of room to grow and that, at the moment, the more devs who come on board, the better for all it will be. The devs who do bail in early are essentially creating the market and setting standards. I would also approach IVAO/Vatsim just in case they have any figures that might indicate the popularity of airfields, a long shot but worth a try. I don't imagine though that you will get anything definitive that will make the decision for you as such. It will no doubt boil down to taking a punt on it and praying it works out for you. Personally I hope you do obviously and that it does go well for you. In your shoes I would investigate World2XPlane and G2XPL. I have found the combination to be a winner to say the least. It produces high definition photoscenery with buildings and objects placed as in reality, subject to the quality of satellite imagery and OSM data for your particular area of concern. It turned XP into the sim I've always wished for, truly as real as it gets.
  5. Perhaps delete your preference files. I've been getting XP crashes with BEX64 named also. I don't know the reason either. Deleting prefs has made it manageable in that it doesn't happen every time, rather 1 in 5 or so. I just restart with the old settings rather than default.
  6. I'm awaitng the Aerosoft Dublin for XP and will certainly buy it. If there were some UK fields I would probably buy those too. I think a developer has to look at it with a long view. I have no doubt given the way interest in X-Plane seems to be growing that the devs who get in early and make their name in XP will benefit in the long run with higher sales but I understand devs not wanting to take risks also. I spent many thousands over the years on FSX addons but have recently abandoned FSX and P3d in favour of XP simply because with some of the new addons that have been released, both free and payware, I've been able to turn XP10 into the sim I've always wanted a sim to be. I didn't care whose sim filled that position, it just turned out to be XP. Basically I am no longer a revenue stream for devs that cater to FSX/P3d, I imagine over time that more will come to the same point that I have as people start to see images of what is possible in XP on fora all over. So basically, yes I would be happy to pay for the airports I prefer to fly to if they existed. If I were a dev I would start gaining expertise now that will pay later. Tough call though, I don't envy you your decision.
  7. Systems vary as will mileage but I can't say I noticed any difference other than between default and ZL 18. I get around 25fps with my settings shown below. I have also used a plugin very similar to MaxxFX which does wonders for the sim even taking care of raleigh scattering but I think an argument broke out between the two devs and led to the one I used being no longer available. The upshot of which is that MaxxFX is probably a really good investment for the price, I'll certainly be getting it shortly. If you need a hand with g2xpl, drop me a pm and I'll get you started. I also use nVidia control panel to augment the antialiasing and anisotropic filtering settings of the sim. I use the highest settings available in the control panel and it helps a lot too. I'm still experimenting. My shadow settings are as they are because of a bug in the latest nVidia drivers which causes red lines to appear all around objects not because they impact fps. Water reflection I find has a big impact and looks better on low anyway tbh. My total texture size is actually higher than seen but it was still rising when I took the screenie and I ran out of patience.
  8. Unless SimHeaven have recut the tile it's still the same.
  9. @SeanK23, I'm pretty sure I know what you are talking about, I think it's the result of out of date satellite imagery, I remember it being in the SimHeaven package I downloaded after I realised that the latest imagery available had done away with the really bad low res stuff that covered large swathes of the country for a long time. I had been hoping that the SH stuff would use that newer imagery but alas it did not. However, knowing now that there was a chance that better could be had I once again investigated G2XPL for the price of another small donation. I had investigated it a good while back but the imagery just wasn't available then. It is now! With the right settings input to the g2xpl.ini I was able to get the latest imagery for the whole country at Zoom 18 I can't overstate the difference this has made to my simming. That coupled with W2XP has given me the sim that I've been chasing for many years. I'm not trying to bash as I used the other sims for many years but there is just no comparison to be made now. I had to delete the others after spending a small fortune on them over the years because they just don't come close anymore. Not even in the same ballpark. World2XPlane, G2XPL and SkyMaxxPro (though 10.30 may negate the need for SkyMaxxPro) are the three things I cannot recommend highly enough!
  10. Yeah it takes a while loading alright but really is worth it. I spent an hour this evening in the Bell 407 flying around Sligo and I doubt if I ever got more than five miles from the field, there's just so much to take in, it's a great way to see your country from the virtual air when you can't afford to fly in real life. Animals in the fields and footballers on the pitch are visible and with TrackIR it truly is "as real as it gets" as Austin would say. I can't wait until the consumer oculus rift comes to market, I'll be in sim heaven. I'm hoping down the line that getting a big enough SSD will help loading times but it's no biggie, I might just get some bigger spinners to hold more countries which is more likely tbh. If I can get the UK done aswell as Ireland I'll have many flying hours to spend in awe of what's possible in XP. I'll look into doing some building models though I can't promise much but I will certainly make an attempt.
  11. I dunno gents, I'm happier than a pig in the proverbial with XP right now. Admittedly it took G2XPL, World2XPlane and SkyMaxxPro to get it sorted but I think the little effort I had to go to elevates XP far above the other offerings in the market. At this stage Laminar can only make brilliant even better imo. X-Plane is going from strength to strength, third party devs are coming on board and this update will make it easier for that to continue which can only be good for the platform. Sure it's not perfect but what is? Don't sweat the small stuff.
  12. I ran G2xpl for scenery in Ireland at a zoom level of 18 rather than the SimHeaven 17 and used W2XP with it. The results are truly stunning when low-n-slow!! All of Ireland north and south comes in at nearly 450Gigs but well worth it. Interested to see about the UK building set! The red roofs in Ireland of the continental buildings just look all wrong. It's a small thing though given the overall effect which really is fantastic. I've started putting stuff into OSM also. Well done Tony and company! Looking forward to v0.4.0!
  13. I imagine you'd have no problem running it though I would be inclined, if I were you, to overclock your 2500k. That cpu is unlocked and would be no problem to OC. My i5 3570k is stock at 3.4 and I run it at 4.4 with no instability or heat troubles on air. The 2500k is renowned as an excellent cpu for gaming. You would also see a substantial fps increase in FSX.
  14. "Nobody has ever seen me and Batman in a room together at the same time, I'm just saying." Brilliant! :LMAO:
  15. I'm open to correction here but I don't think FSX is optimised to take advantage of hyperthreading at all. If you use affinity 14 you'll just use your four physical cores which is all that can be used anyway as far as I know. 84 would, I think, have no real effect.
  16. Yeah it takes time alright but half the fun of simming is learning how to place one piece atop the other until you have your ideal simming platform whichever one fits the bill for you. When you have scenery sorted, if you are anything like me, you'll be using WED to build your local field which is highly enjoyable too. X-Plane is coming along fast in many respects. Keep us posted! Shout if you need help.
  17. You may find you'll need to delete your FSX.cfg and start again to get access. You could also go in and just change the settings in your .cfg if you know which is which. The difference between today and yesterday probably boils down to you flying in a different area, possibly a different aircraft, requiring more memory today. Not the news you wanted probably but at least you're not actually locked out as such.
  18. I imagine the problem you would face there would be to do with the EULA's on various things. Obviously this matters. However, for those items where the issue doesn't arise you should be able to merge folders without great difficulty. Sound to sound, aircraft to aircraft, effects to effects etc. If it were me however I would only use P3d installers or the migration tool so that I didn't run into problems where I couldn't actually tell what the cause was because I had just copy/pasted a lot of stuff at once. You could probably do what you want but it might not prove the best way in the long run.
  19. I couldn't honestly say about the differences between boards. My approach has always been to decide what parts I need based on what they will be required to do. For instance if you use X-Plane 10 as I do then the extra VRAM goes a long way on the 770, without it I would need to run at lower settings, I imagine P3d would benefit from it too (not sure) though I've stopped using P3d and FSX altogether at this stage. Many of the games coming out now make great use of it tbh. You've got to remember that you are looking to get the most you can out of a particular budget. It took me weeks of research to come up with my build for my budget. It has to be as futureproof as possible and is not something to rush, take your time! Whatever you do, don't think that paying big bucks for one component which is capable of outperforming your other components that you skimped on because you went for that most expensive of items in it's bracket is a good idea. You need to match the performance of the individual pieces with each other in as much as you can keeping in mind what it needs to do for you. You need to do things like figure out how much RAM you need. If you don't do things like photoshop or video conversion then 16 is better than 32 simply because it costs less and frees up money for the other components. Btw, in ram timings, lower is better. 1600Mhz RAM is fine for simmers. Ask yourself what makes a good computer for what I need to do, if you don't know, slow down and find out or it will bite you in the &@($* down the line.
  20. I would be confident that that would have more or less the same functionality wrapped up in a better board than mine. It'll say somewhere in the specs that it has boost I imagine, you can usually find that info on the site selling the board. If not just go to the ASRock site itself and the info will be there somewhere. Just on another note, I have found the extra headroom on the 4Gig 770 has been needed in some of the games/sims I run. I would have regretted buying the 2gig if I had gone that way.
  21. With the slightly greater level of difficulty though, comes a greater level of satisfaction when it starts to come together  . I tend to use a joystick coupled with a set of rudder pedals for best control but that's just me. I have in the past relied on twistgrip on a joystick and it works perfectly, I just find the use of the pedals helps with the immersion factor. I'm not an accomplished heli pilot by any means but I find the Bell very controllable.
  22. I personally went for the ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Performance. When I upgrade I tend to aim for the level one below the newest of everything in order to get best bang for buck as they say. The BIOS takes care of the boost by just setting it to on.
  23. As far as I recall, the free is limited to a resolution of 16, you really need 18. hi_res_textures_threshold_radius_m=0 is essential so that the whole tile is filled with hi-res. Use [service1] only with only_one_service_per_texture=yes. When you fire up XP after installing the plugin you can use the plugin to get your coordinates and copy/paste to the .ini. Don't use any of the Save/Apply options just close it out and run the program from its .exe. Don't forget, all other services active=no. That should get you motoring. Btw, it can take several hours to do a single 1x1 degree tile.
  24. You have the right idea, G2XPL gives you the area and resolution you want. You are also right about the readme, it took me quite a while to figure out, I had even given up on it a few times but now I have it set up such that I only ever have to change the coordinates in the .ini file and run to download a tile or tiles. It really is worth the effort though!!
