  1. Advice is generally free because that's usually what it's worth :Straight Face: . If it was my decision to make between the two, it's not but if it were, I would be inclined to wait until I comfortably could save the price of the better card. I perfectly understand the compulsion to buy now but maybe it would be better to wait a little longer? It would be a real sickener if you got the lesser card and realised it didn't do what you'd hoped but you were now stuck with it. X-Plane will continue to improve and demand ever more of the hardware we throw at it but once the purchase is made, you'll be stuck with it until the next upgrade cycle, there's no rush.
  2. I doubt if anyone has migrated to a 770 from a 760 so a comparison from experience is unlikely. It boils down as these things usually do to a case of get the best you can afford. I took this pic a while back, I think I still run these settings (water is on low now I think and I use about 40% clouds with SkyMaxxPro) with World2XPlane OSM and photoscenery. I get in the 30's in 3d cockpit over cityscapes now after the recent beta updates, depending on the cockpit it can go as low as 20's.
  3. That's brilliant! I've never seen that before and I've had XP since v7. Would be cool to see in sim though.
  4. You can make your own with G2XPL. It's not hard at all. It does take a lot of drive space though. The resolution possible is better than any commercially produced scenery that I've seen.
  5. Sorry, my bad! The .org is x-plane.org Have a look at the G2XPL thread. Robert2 is the author. Other than Simheaven, this as far as I know is the only way to get photo scenery for oneself. He might give some indication about the popularity of photo scenery, might not, worth a try though. Yes, an FSX treescapes conversion might sell, I'd certainly buy. They would certainly have nothing to lose I imagine, there I go imagining again.
  6. Impossible to quantify really. Simheaven scenery is widely used in Europe thanks to having reasonably decent autogen coverage from OSM data, see World2XPlane. Personally I create my own photoscenery with G2XPL and need a 3TB drive just for Ireland and the UK though it is at a higher res than Simheavens stuff. OSM data is patchy there so trees make a big difference, having said that, a treelines package of a sort exists ( see Alpilotx trees and farms) and if you were to do a package for the U.S. which I presume is your intention, be aware that probably nobody has photoscenery for it all as Simheaven don't have it all and the drivespace needed would be prohibitive. State by state might sell but I imagine you'd need Simheaven to cover all the states first to create the market. So the answer you're looking for is, I imagine, not a lot though I base that on my own imaginings more than any real idea. Asking on the .org might be wise. Asking Robert2 who authors G2XPL might be wiser still. He's probably the one who would best know.

  8. I was running into troubles with eight and went to twelve (actually bought 16 but cpu cooler got in the way for one of the slots, I know, I'm a dumb*ss) and it's all good now. Future developments will mean that you'll have the option to load 12 scenery tiles instead of the current 6 for those who like to fly high at which time twice the ram can be used (you should still be able to opt for 6 tiles) so going on my experiences, 24 will be needed, 32 really.
  9. Given the impression of you that your post conveys Richard, I for one would attach no significance to your particular answer regarding the sims. @uwespeed; Yes!
  10. Yeah, we the old guard just keep shufflin' but this can only bring in new blood which is ultimately good for us all. I honestly think we've long passed the freeware scene. It's possible we lost a bit of common courtesy and civility between ourselves along the road but so it goes. We'll all need to support the new blood as they arrive which at very least will give us something to do other than ###### at each other. It's all good. I do agree, the prices asked by some today are just ridiculous though. Devs have run away with themselves in some cases. I suppose they will charge what the market will bear though so perhaps we are our own worst enemies.
  11. In a way I'd be surprised if other devs don't follow suit. It stikes me as a win/win going that route to a fresh market whilst still maintaining their own established channels to market.
  12. This doesn't amount to much in my opinion, as far as I can see this is just another revenue stream for Flight 1. Nothing new is being done that I can see from the following; Flight 1 just released a press release announcing they are partnering with DoveTail on the new FSX.... July 2014 Following the recent announcement that Dovetail Games has acquired the rights to distribute the multi-award winning Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Gold Edition via Valve’s popular digital retail channel Steam, the company is pleased to announce that it will be working in partnership with Flight1 for the launch. A developer and publisher of flight simulation content, Flight1 is best known for its extensive range of add-ons for various editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator titles. As part of this agreement, Flight1 will be delivering a range of add-ons for the forthcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition. In addition, this partnership will see Dovetail Games distributing a range of selected Flight1 titles via Steam on an ongoing basis. Steve Bainbridge, COO at Dovetail Games said, “We are very pleased to be working in conjunction with Flight1. They are highly experienced in creating quality content that supports Microsoft’s Flight Simulator series and we are looking forward to working together to help Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition realise its full potential.” Mungo Leir, Managing Director of Flight1 Europe added, “I am delighted that Flight1 is working with Dovetail Games. Dovetail’s vision for Flight Simulator is good news for the flight sim community in all sorts of ways. We’re very excited.”
  13. If advertising and donations don't cover your costs, how do you keep the show on the road at all? Perfectly understandable if you tell me to mind mine
  14. When I look at pictures like these, I'm baffled as to to why there are those around here who moan incessantly about what's lacking in XPX. It's not hard to get this level of fidelity. No other platform comes close. Each to their own I suppose.
  15. I suppose user reviews don't neccesarily need to be those of the lengthy formatted text and picture kind. User reviews could also apply to the simpler I do/don't like it, or this aspect of it, as expressed in the forum postings. Those kinds of simpler reviews are cumulative, giving a broader picture of the product from many as opposed to the opinion of one which likely has a lesser value.
  16. What is it about my postings thus far that indicates a lack of aquaintance with the matter at hand? What is it that makes my postings argumentative rather than simple expressions of opinion from one who also tends to call it as they see it? In this case my opinion is that your initial posting in reply to Paraffin was unneccesarily dismissive. Any posting that begins with " pffft" is, again in my personal opinion, unneccesarily dismissive whilst also being inaccurate, you having, as you admit, settled on a percentage pulled from the air.
  17. You are misunderstanding the exchange here. You don't pay them to do something, you simply purchase the product. There is a world of difference between the two. Of course you are free to make all the suggestions you like but you are not entitled to a sense of entitlement. That you include the word "probably" indicates your lack of certainty as of the above post. Perhaps you could list for us the missing attributes that you simply cannot live without in your day to day usage of the units so that we may all better understand why you are so dismissive of Paraffins post as to begin your reply with "pffft"?
  18. A fair point succinctly made. Some though seem to believe that a simple willingness to pay confers the inalienable right to criticise vociferously. It surely allows us to profer suggested improvements we might like to see once we have paid but the neverending scattergun criticism simply lowers the general tone of the conversation and makes us look collectively a bunch of cranky old gits. That can't be too appealing to potential developers or new entrants to the hobby.
  19. Yes I can see why they might be wary. Still Austin has managed to carve out a nice living for himself and his crew marching largely to his own drum. I wouldn't pay the moaning crowd too much heed were I them.
  20. I did not know that, good news indeed. It seems to me that inertia is moving Outerra slowly but inexorably in the direction of flight sim. It's fun to watch.
  21. A damn fine thought! Best in my mind to focus on what we do have rather than what we don't. I imagine that any of us with the time and money to indulge in our hobby have more of both than many. True indeed!
