  1. Just to add to that, when installing a new driver, go for the advanced option, choose a 'clean install' (this removes the old driver) and finally after it's installed delete the Nvidia folder from the root of your OS drive. And as mentioned above, NEVER install GeForce experience, it's just an unnecessary system hog and it will constantly bug you. I learned all of this from Nick Needham's FSX bible, so credit to him.
  2. I have a GTX980 and I can guarantee you that I've never monitored it even being slightly stressed. I use REX 4 and pretty high scenery settings, so I really have my doubts about any tweak to your fsx.cfg that can shift some of the texture processing over to the graphics card. However I have never done any in-depth testing to qualify that statement, and there those who are far more knowledgeable that attest it does. So, imho, I would get the GTX 970 and put the money towards a better processor. Not that you asked for advice on cpus, but from what research I've done, you'd be better off going with the I7 4970K, as FSX isn't really going to take advantage of the architecture changes to the Skylake cpus to justify the extra cash. If you do any graphically intensive work or video rendering then you'd see the benefit. I have a I7 4770K overclocked to 4.5Ghz without any manual voltage changes and it's as stable as they get, and that's on what was the cheapest Asus Z97 board available! I'm going to wait for the next gen of Intel's processors and hopefully by then we'll know more about Dovetail's plan for a 'sequel' to FSX. I assume they'll make the obvious fixes, but we don't know yet how compatible it will be with FSX add-ons.... Hope this was of some help.
  3. At that resolution and not too many high resolution add-ons, that card should be fine. The GTX 970 is considered the 'best bang for buck' card at the moment and would give you the option of switching to possibly a dual monitor set-up, and certainly you could dial-up the graphic settings!
  4. Cheers Wayne, No-one seems to have a bad word to say about them. Cannot wait!!!! Thanks,
  5. Thanks Mike, I appreciate the quick reply. Let me know if you ever get bored with this setup because I'd be more than willing to take it off your hands for you  I live in Galway, which is on the West Coast of Ireland, so postage would be pretty steep. Unless you happen to be flying to Shannon or Dublin in the near future. If not, because I'm such a nice guy, I'd even be willing to pick up half the delivery costs! No need to thank me, that's just the type of guy I am :Big Grin: . Seriously though, I cannot imagine what simming on such a setup feels like on a purely immersive level- and you'd know, having the real thing to compare to! You say you're adding three more pc's- I can't imagine what for, but then I'd imagine that you're running a pretty complex simpit, so possibly they give you control over some of your hardware add-ons? Don't feel the need to answer, I'm already unable to process what it's like viewing and simming with a three by 75" inch 4K cockpit If you ever put up any videos on youtube, please let me know, as I'd love to see it in action! Best of luck with the 75" Samsungs, and thanks again for such a prompt reply
  6. Great to hear everything's worked out for you- you gotta have that internet! I don't own a switch myself, but I use an additional router which acts like one (I let the main router handle DHCP & DNS), although it does broadcast wireless, so technically it's an access point. It should be even easier with a dedicated switch as it should have to be barely configured at all, ie, you won't have to switch off DHCP (which auto-assigned IP addresses, with an unmanaged switch anyway) and you should be good to go. It might still be a good idea to assign static addresses if you haven't already. You can do that in Windows itself and it simple to do, and there are hundreds of articles online to help you out. I have never had to it on my router/access point before, but different models have different requirements Dave's comments above was very good advice making sure you're router is set to access point which was probably the source of your original problems. His other advice depends, as he said, depends on the type of switch you've bought (nothing is ever straightforward in networking I'm afraid!). If you have any problems with the switch let me know- I know there are some hybrid switch/routers available and that could cause conflicts with your main router. Hopefully not though. Feel free to post any other questions, however make sure you quote me, or I won't get a notification that you've replied. Or Dave obviously knows his stuff, probably better than me! Happy networking Larry!
  7. Just read NickN's posts from an above link- apparently it had only appeared that all the threads were being used. As has been conclusively stated by an original FSX developer, FSX simply does not see threads, to quote Nick "FSX IS DUMB AND THINKS THE PHYSICAL CACHE IS A PHYSICAL CORE. THAT THREAD CAN BE SEEN IN THE TASK MANAGER, BUT THE THREAD DIES IN PROCESS SINCE THE APPLICATION CAN NOT, DOES NOT, WILL NOT, READ OR EVEN KNOW THAT THREAD EXISTS. FSX HAS NO, NONE, NADA, ZERO, ZIP CODE THAT WILL PROCESS LOGICAL CORE THREADS ...AKA: HYPERTHREAD" So now I'm just confused if I should turn off hyperthreading in the bios when I'm using FSX (I'll need those extra threads for Photoshop) and use an affinity mask of 14 or just omit the affinity mask from the fsx.cfg completely. Guess there's only one way to find out! God, sometimes I really feel like I'm spending more time trying to find the holy grail of fsx.cfgs than actually flying. Hopefully after tonight's experiments, I can just stick with highmemfix=1 and widescreen=true. DirectX 10 fixer has sorted out all my OOMS thank goodness! Thanks Steve, I will try a few different variations tonight. You don't have any opinion on the BUFFERPOOL tweak by any chance. I'm currently using USEPOOLS=0. Am I wasting my time? Sorry, something else just occurred to me- can any of the add-ons on my FSX rig benefit from hyperthreading. I currently use REX 4 HD (no wx engine), Aerosoft traffic, EazyDok, TrackIR 5? In which case should I always keep hyperthreading switched on?
  8. I have used a certain individuals tweak guide and he recommended with a quad core with hyperthreading to use an Affinity Mask of 84. Based of feedback from OpenHW and ProcMon; but did it improve performance in FSX, well it certainly didn't detract from it. I undertsand FSX itself doesn't use hyperthreading, but an affinity mask can theoretically allow one of the cores to work exclusively on add-ons or background tasks. I'm going to read the above mentioned articles and then try to run FSX with hyperhtreading turned off in the bios and then with it on and with a couple of different affinity masks and monitor cpu activity and of course FPS. Thanks guys for the article links posted above.
  9. Hi Mike, looking at your profile page you obviously have a collection of system components that boggle my mind! I just curious though as to how all of it is all physically set up? If I'm not misunderstanding your specs, you have 5 cpus, 4 graphics cards, 4 motherboards and yet only 16 GB of Ram. Do you not currently use all of these components in your rigs, and how many physical rigs do you actually use at any one time? Hope I'm not taking up too much of your time by asking this, but I'm just fascinated by your setup. I'm a guy who is dreaming about upgrading to a 30" or 32" main monitor! Thanks Mike
  10. Tell me more!!!! Like what colour scheme you went for? Initial impressios? How long was your wait? Sorry for all the questions, but November cannot come fast enough for me- using the Thrustmaster T1600m for rudder control is getting real old, real fast!
  11. I've been debating whether to go for a 30" 1600 monitor from my 24" 1080 or a 32" at 1440. The new batchkes of the Dell Ultrasharps of the 32" inch versions from Samsung, Acer and Asus are cheaper than the 30" versions from the likes of the 30" Dell Ultrasharps with their top-notch IPS panels. I've only ever used TN panels so even the MVA panels that the cheaper 32" inch panels will be a big improvement I'm hoping. I'm just hesitant because quite a view users have reported problems with colour banding on the Samsung and BenQ models which both use the same panels. Does anyone here own one of these models (either a 30" 1600 or a 32" 1440) and would owners of IPS panels of any size feel like they are really worth the extra dough? The poor viewing angles of TN monitors has never bothered me as I'm always sat right in front of it, but I'm wondering if the richer, more vibrant colours and inky blacks of the IPS monitors make you an instant convert? Thanks.
  12. I bought my TrackIR5 Pro on Ebay and the previous owner had reinforced the Track Clip Pro by winding some thinnish wire around the various IR prongs. Not very pretty, but really effective, I'm clumsy as hell and would definitely broken it by now if not for the wire reinforcement!
  13. If you use TrackIR5, other peoples EZDok profiles are pretty pointless I've found. You'll nearly always being looking at views from different angles than the creator. I find that I have to tweak pretty much all of the existing ones anyway. If you only want interior views it only takes about 10 minutes to create a profile, and then you can just use the cycle views keys you've assigned along with your hat switch to pan around for some pretty spectacular views of the plane cruising through the air.
  14. Are you using the paid for version of Steve's Direct X 10 fixer? Before I bought it, I experienced similar problems with scenery not appearing correctly with the freeware version.
  15. Thanks Jim, and I know this wasn't really the appropriate thread for my question- it was just your comment about not having the best eyesight and using a 30" that prompted my question. I'm sure a 1600 px vertical resolution would blow me away! However the Dell 30" Ultrasharp monitors are quite a bit more expensive than the newer 32" 1440 monitors, but I realise the Dells have exceptional IPS panels, build quality and a very loyal fan-base. I'll continue my research in the appropriate forum thread. Thanks again Jim for your prompt reply.
  16. Hey Jim, I'm just curious about the 30" Dell you had, which presumably had a 1440 vertical resolution- did you find you had to zoom in a lot in both Windows and FSX to read text or numbers properly. I ask because, I found out that I had astigmatism last year and now have to wear glasses all the time. I'm also in two minds about going for a 30" or 32", both with 2K resolution. There's not a huge selection in the 32" sector at the moment, with Samsung and BenQ selling the two most popular models. Both use the same panels and there have been numerous reports of colour banding with both models. So I guess I was wondering if you or anyone else would recommend going for a quality 30" IPS monitor or one of the newer 32" models. I'll be upgrading from a 24" inch 16:9 btw. Oh, and sorry for hijacking the thread!
  17. Interesting to hear that. Good to hear that from someone who's done their research. Even if the 980GTX doesn't do the job, you can always add a second cheaper card for one of the monitors and still pay a lot less that you would for a Titan X. Best of luck either way Robbie!
  18. I don't use panel builder but I have definitely had my share of networking problems over the years. If you could hit the windows key and c, type cmd, and in the command prompt window type ipconfig /all. Make that window big enough to display all the resulting information and take a screen shot of that (use the snipping tool) and you can either post it here or message me with it and I'll try to see what's going on.
  19. Hi, I was wondering if anyone here uses one of those MMO mice with multiple programmable buttons like the Logitech G600 (20 buttons) or one of Razer's offering?. I would also like to know if they work well with the registered version of FSUIPC? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  20. If I had that kind of money to spend on components, I would definitely do a bit of research into Skylake CPUs. For about £465 you can get an i7 6700k and motherboard on an English gaming hardware site. I just think for such a cpu bound game a Titan X is overkill. Most users here would probably say anything above a GTX 970 is overkill. The new Skylake architecture may not be producing faster speeds in simple clock cycles, but it far more efficient, and uses the 14nm process allowing for more features and super-fast cache memory to communicate directly with the core cpu. Just a thought.....
  21. Ive tried it with an I7 4770K @ 4.5Ghz and a GTX980 and I reckon I probably lost about 5fps on average, regularly dropping below 20fps. I use REX 4 with 4096 textures which I forgot to lower though. I also use the complete Orbx suite with specific add-ons for Ireland, UK and the West coast Us ones. Wasn't crazy about the setup either, mind you I wasn't using identical monitors which I've heard is pretty important. I'm currently using using just the one 24" for VC and another 24" for 2d panels, checklists, etc. Hoping to upgrade my main monitor to a 32". Hope this helps.
  22. Just wanted to correct my previous post. After a quite a few reviews of payware aircraft from the likes of Carenado, A2AA, etc., I realised that they all seem to come with 4096x4096 textures for their VC panels- my bad.I also realised that Ted was probably referring to the viewable area of 1440 monitors as opposed to pixel density. Which makes perfect sense. Apologies for both of my incorrect assumptions !
