  1. The more I hear and see videos of these 34"+ curved monitors I really think these are the perfect solution for a VC along with a smaller monitor (24") for a 2D instrument panel. However, I'm thinking with TrackIR 5 on a monitor that size the 3D panel would be large enough to allow me to use a second monitor for a large outside view of the aircraft and maybe the GPS. I'm just wondering if a GTX 980 and a I7 4770K @ 4.5Ghz would be be even close to powering those two. I currently use this setup along with 16GB 2133Mhz Ram and with some of the scenery I have installed and all the scenery details to the Max (DX10) I'm often struggling to reach 30fps. Does anyone witn a similar setup also have FPS problems? I know I need to update my NI config, but i can't see that improving things much? Has anyone found that a optimised Nvidia Inspector config has improved FPS significantly? I know I've discussed this with you before Jim, but i was wondering what FPSs you're getting with all your add-ons? I know you intend to update to a Skylake CPU and a 980 TI I think, but have you had to sacrifice much in the way of settings currently to get it running at a respectable rate? Also, if you don't mind, have you any screenshots of it running? No probs if you don't, thanks. Hey Slayer, I was wondering if you're running all your add-ons, PlanG, etc. on the same PC or do you you use a networked PC. Goddamm, I want one of those 34" curved beauties! But with the way the Euro is at the moment, its' gonna be at least 2016 until I can find any real value in the market, and hopefully by then the various VR and AR headsets will have monitor manufacturers pricing their products more competively.
  2. I don't know about the other programs but I believe PlanG doesn't require WIDEFS to communicate between two networked Pcs. It can use simconnect or just FSUIPC4 and requires you to choose and configure the transfer protocol yourself. It's all explained in the free downloadable PlanG manual. I'll be sticking to FlightMap on my Nexus 10 myself until I have a lot more time on my hands!
  3. A 34" model is what I'll keep an eye out for then Jim. I doubt it'll be a high quality Dell model like yours, but I've only ever owned TN panels anyway and I find them perfectly fine. I don't think I'll need a 144Mhz refresh rate either as 3D content isn't something I feel I need, although 120Mhz would be nice. Thanks for the recommendation Jim, much appreciated! Off to Amazon I go. I really wish we had a Best Buy in Ireland, I'm constantly hearing about the amazing deals people get. Ah well.....
  4. Q1- I was originally using two DVI cables but after one stopped working I replaced it with a IBRA® 1.5m High Speed v2.0/1.4a HDMI Cable. This is connected to my main monitor which has a native resolution of 1900x1080. The second monitor which has a native resolution of 1900x1200 is still connected by a DVI cable. Q2- I'm running the main monitor at 1080 and 60Mhz and with the second monitor I tried both it's native resolution and forcing it run at 1080 also at 60Mhz Q3- The main monitor is a AOC G2460PQU 24" Widescreen 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor and the second monitor which I bought back in 2008 I think is a Acer G24 Widescreen Gaming LCD Monitor. Q4- I running Windows 7 64 Bit professional. Q5- I can't say for sure that I set the resolution in Windows, I would always use the Nvidia Control Panel and both monitors displayed as expected. Q6- Yes, I am running FSX in full-screen. When I get a third larger monitor I was considering switching all the cable connections to DisplayPort as the 980 has three of those ports. Would you recommend that or should it make any different. My current display situation has both monitors running at 1900x1080 in everyday Windows use but in FSX since switching from the 780 to the 980 and rebuilding the fsx.cfg file, the second monitor is now displaying at 1900x1200. I'm perfectly happy with that, and I hope I don't encounter any more anomalies when I add a third display with a higher resolution. There's so many variables involved that it just makes my head hurt! I'm sure the different cables connecting the monitors to the GC are significant, but unfortunately not in a way that I fully understand despite researching the three main variants (all of which have different version numbers and therefore different capabilities, such as bandwidth). The different aspect ratio of the second monitor might be a factor as well, but I'm sure there's a lot of simmers using monitors of different resolutions and aspect ratios in tandem I appreciate you taking the time to help and I know how hard it is to troubleshoot a PC problem without having access to it's various settings. I'm probably due a graphics driver upgrade and I'll make sure to delete the entire NI folder this time. Thanks again.
  5. Way to cause a serious case of tech envy. That screen is a monster. Do run the monitors off two discrete graphic cards? I also assume TrackIR is essential with a 55" screen. Have you ever had a triple monitor setup that you could compare it to? I can't decide to go with three 24" in Nvidia Surround or one 30" to 34" centre monitor with the two 24" monitors displaying instruments, maps, etc. Sorry about all the questions BTW, I'm pretty much a newbie and I have yet to find a setup that's suitably immersive. i have TrackIR, but even with that it's hard to feel immersed with a 24" 16:9 monitor as my VC. Geeze, first world problems, right?
  6. I did actually mean the profile, it wouldn't make much sense to delete the application folder- my bad. This is something I will start doing as I only use a couple of tweaks in NI anyway. Thanks Djang0! In relation to this point Django, do you know where FSX gets the screen resolution values from? I have two monitors both 24" but my main one is 16:9 and my instruments monitor is 16:10. Until I upgraded to a GTX 980 from a 780 I could never get the resolution I set for it in the Nvidia Control Panel, it was always considerably lower and everything looked blocky. It seems to be working now, but I would like to know for future reference in case I have similar problems with future monitor upgrades. Thanks
  7. Thanks for feedback Jim. Well, based on your experience with moving instruments and maps to a secondary monitor I think a 30" monitor might be the best option for me. I would love to try out my TrackIR on a 34" screen though, it might negate my need to place the main instrument panel on a second screen. Plus I use my Nexus 10 for my moving map. Food for thought..... Just one more question if you don't mind Jim - what graphics card are you currently using?
  8. I'm actually considering a similar monitor uprade myself, however my major concern would be the loss of frame rates with the increased resolution, even with an I7 4470k @ 4.5Ghz and a GTX 980. I really think you'd need to consider a GC upgrade if you want to run those 3 monitors in tandem, even if you're not using Nvidia Surround. There's a lot of variables though, so its hard to say for sure. If you play other games that really need around 60 fps I'd imagine you system would struggle with graphical settings at high or above. You might be better off with a 24" monitor with a 144Mhz refresh rate, that should sort your headaches out and they're pretty cheap compared to your other options. I also think 28 inches is a bit small for a 4k monitor, you'd really need a 32" screen or preferably above to be able to appreciate the increased resolution without having to squint! Just my two cents!
  9. Hi there, I have to say that that is one beautiful monitor, and one that's potentially in my price range. I was just wondering if the 3440 x 1440 resolution at 34" makes for readable text both in game and in regular usage? Could you also tell me what card you're using to drive the monitor and if you have any additional, smaller monitors attached to the card or via USB? Thanks in advance!
  10. Hi there, I was wondering if it sufficient to do a clean install under advanced options when installing the latest driver or do I need to use the third party software to mentioned? And could someone confirm if it is necessary to delete the Nvidia Inspector application folder before installing a new driver? I had not heard this before. Thank you
  11. Without more detail my best guess would be that you accidentally unplugged one of your system fans or adjusted it's speed downwards. Just check that all your fans are operating correctly with your case open. Also, what exactly do you mean by 'fan controller' - is it a hardware one that sits in one of your front drive bays with a display and controllers?
  12. Hi Mike. FSX is my sim of choice so I can't comment definitively on P3D or X-Plane, however I think both these sims, even more so than FSX would benefit more from the graphics card upgrade. You would definitely see vastly improved load times with an SSD, but for eye-candy and better FPS I reckon the GTX 770 would definitely be the superior of the two options. Hope this helps.
  13. Thank you to everyone who took the time to reply, but sorry for the delay, I had to put FSX on hold for a few months when other commitments took over. Thanks again, I really appreciate it!
  14. Hi Jim. As a virtual newbie, this has been an issue that has completely perplexed me. I run two 24" monitors, my main screen is 16:9 1080p and my secondary monitor is 16:10 1900x1200 resized in Windows to 1080p to match up with my main monitor. Regardless of what resolution I manually inserted in the fsx.cfg file for the second monitor it always displayed in game as 1280×800, and as a result the 2D cockpit instruments I placed there always looked blocky. However, since upgrading to a 980 GTX and deleting the entry for the second monitors resolution to let FSX detect it it has been displaying at a much improved 1080p. That's great and all but my 780 card should have been more than capable of doing the same. Just plain confusing and annoying! On a related note I'm currently debating whether to replace my main monitor with a 30" or a 34" model, depending on what sort of deals I might chance upon. I assume you and many other members here have had a number of setups over the years so I was wondering if people thought a 24" to 30" upgrade would add a significant amount of immersion and a really noticeable difference, or should I save up for a 34" model? Thank you. Just to clarify, I intend to keep my original two monitors for displaying instruments and an outside view and I wanted to determine if the 980 GTX was up to the job. I have an I7 @ 4.5Ghz, 16GB Crucial 2133Mhz Ram and two 500GB running Windows 7 and FSX respectively. I'm also running Orbx Global and their Ireland and England sceneries as well as REX 2.0. I also intend intend to purchase Steve's Direct 10 fixer, having being very impressed with the stability gained using his freeware version. Impossible to answer conclusively of course, just wondering if anyone else is running a similar config. Cheers.
  15. Hey Demious, all your talk about pedals has just made me more curious. What exactly are quadrants and what are they used for? Also would I need a desk that I could place them directly under as that's not an option for me unfortunately. Thanks. Also, Jimmy, thanks for Leo Bodnar idea, but upon further research I think they would be a level above my electronics expertise. I may try a couple of little switches though, could be fun. Have you ever tried one of his panels, and I do realise I'm talking to some serious, hardcore simmers here. It's honestly quite humbling.
  16. Thanks a lot Demious, I think that could be in my price range. I really like the look of the Bodnar solution. My only fear with attempt a build of the panel to place them inside. Electronis I can deal with, carpentry, not at all. But I could certainly find someone locally to take care of that end of the project. I love the flexibility and possibilities of these boards. Really given me a lot of food for thought... Thanks Jimmy.
  17. You sir, are a legend! Thank you so much for all your patience and advice and I look forward to watching you videos. And thanks Jimmy for letting me know A2A making such a high standard of WWII aircraft. What a great forum! Thanks guys! Is that the same panel that Mark referred to Demious?
  18. Yes I've heard of A2A, but I thought PMDG created some pretty impressive aircrafts - maybe they focus on airliners more. I'm really not playing at a level where I can appreciate the subtleties of individual aircraft and I've got practically got no realism settings on  . But the feeling of landing that 737 in the tutorial is one of the biggest buzzes I've ever experienced gaming- I'd say simulating but I had too many realism settings switched off, I'll definitely check out some of A2A planes, especially the ones you mentioned. The Flight1 BN-2 Islander definitely sounds in my wheelhouse. Sorry for bombarding you with questions but are there any companies that specialise in WW2 aircraft and scenarios or would I have to have a look at IL_Sturmovik: Cliffs Of Dover for that type of game. Have you played that since it was fully patched? Might be worth a couple of quid. Anyway, thank you again Mark. You've just become my unofficial guru on this site:) Don't worry I'll follow you on YouTube for any more tips. Is it called MarkDH? Take care.
  19. That's brilliant Mark, I had my suspicions that they would just be overpriced novelties. You weren't wrong about VRinsight being pricey, saw on Amazon.com for $260. I'd need to do my research into that. Do you think it's well-built and rugged enough to risk a second hand buy? Also, is there an unofficial buy and sell thread on the site. Well, Mark, you just saved me close to a €100. Is there any aircraft that has just blown you away with it's realism that I should treat myself to. I'd happily gift you a middle range plane if you like.. If not I'll get myself some new scenery add-ons. Thank you so much, Paul
  20. At first the people at Orbx would be the complete scenery solution. Now apparently they recommend FS Global or as many as the FS Ultimate series as you can afford. All I want to know is if I have Orbx Vector 1.30 do I need FTX Vector, or indeed would people recommend it over the Orbx product? I am still confused about the install order after FSX and Acceleration. Is it Orbx Global first or say FTX Ultimate Americas and Europe. And Orbx also have their European land classes which I wonder whether I need if I use FTX Ultimate and Africa. I don't believe there is a definitive answer to this one, I'm just looking to avoid wasting money on products that I don't need. And it seems to have gotten a lot more confusing these past few months. Ah well, it's all part of the fun and games I guess of pursuing this hobby (obsession) Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on these issues, and believe me I have attempted to research it myself and just ended up playing Fifa! So many products, so many opinions, they sure don't make it enjoy this simulation with the the satisfaction that you're enjoying the best possible experience you could. I have an I7-7440k, a Gefore 780 GTX and 16GB of Corsair 2133 RAM btw. Thanks again everybody!
  21. Hi, my name is Paul and I just introduced myself in the newbies forum. I own FSX Gold and and FS Ultimate Americas. I decided to start with a relatively modest t16000m and I own a Corsair K65 RGB which is excellent for assigning different colours to different types of controls on a key-by-key basis. However already I am starting to crave more!!! While there is no way that I could afford anything from GoFlight, I was looking at a few lower end panels from Saitek on Amazon which are affordable to me at the moment. My dilemma is do I just buy the Saitek Pro Flight Switch Panel or should I add the Saitek Pro Flight TPM Panel as well. Realistically at the moment my budget is about €200 so that would have to be it. Ideally I'd like to hear that the Pro Flight Switch would be sufficient and work my way up from there. I would also like to hear peoples opinions on pedals, and yokes and how much they add to the immersion? I know that's a lot of questions but if anyone could address even a couple it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance (He said optimistically!) Paul Ps. Please let me know if the use of brand names is allowed in here. Thanks.
  22. Hey, my name is Paul and I'm from the Galway, on the West Coast of Ireland. I'm a relative newbie to this wonderful hobby ( I tried to play it more like an arcade game many years ago). Now at the ripe old age of forty I've decided to engage fully with it. And boy does it turn from a hobby into an obsession real quick! I don't think this is the place to post hardware questions, so I'll just say hello to everyone and hope to chat and get to know some of you
  23. Thanks mentioning this Mike Ray, as a total flight sim newbie I looking to mine the minds of experienced pilots like Mike a d experienced simmers like yourself. I particularly like the idea that you can buy his articles for a couple of bucks.
