Black/disappearing textures? Some bizarre news ...

Amazing ... that eliminated all issues discussed and investigated here (http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=270520) with the MD11! Switching between applications works now (both with ALT+TAB and with ALT+ENTER), no more hangs or screen flickering when accessing FSX menus to change some settings, all this even with FS Global 2010 scenery and over longer legs over water away from towers. Thank you, Sir!Sigmar Stadlmeier
I'm glad it works for you, but it makes no difference for me.Tim

Keep lowering it and make sure you did not make any typos. It should be set to 500000 (500,000) at first, if you typed it correctly try decreasing it to 400KB, 300KB, etc. Also make sure you do not have dual bufferpool entries (try using the find feature in notepad and find the line "poolsize"), and make sure you entered the lines as such:[bufferpools]Poolsize=------EDIT: Do you have light bloom on by any chance?John U.

Tim,FWIW, Upgrading from Vista X64 to XP X64 is what completely cured the dusk/night texture corruption for me. Wish I would have done it long ago.

Yes, it definitely seems to be a Vista / Windows 7 thing. Thanks to the others for suggesting fiddling with bufferpools. This is actually one of the (many) things I tried ages ago when working systematically through possible causes. In fact I think if you go back to the ancient history of this thread and its predecessors you will find traces of this. I cannot now recall exactly what numbers I used, but I tried very low numbers as well as very large ones. None of the variants I tried produced a complete solution in my case, although I do recall that different numbers made some difference to how easily I could trigger the problem: I do not remember any clear overall pattern. On the whole I think I'll just stick with the sound fix and put up with the poor quality sounds.Tim

So far I have not had any issues with my sound on dvd quality. However, I disabled enhancements and unchecked the box that lets apps have exclusive control of the soundmax drivers. I am still testing this setup. I have no idea if it is just placebo thouhg. It maybe worth a shot.

I'll try that too. I can't turn down my audio settings to the suggested 8000hz, the texture monster struck me again last night flying into KSEA in my lds 767 at dusk, I don't even change views, alt tab, alt enter or anything and then bam, my VC is gone. I have to remember to make it to my destination before the sun goes down :(

Did you try the suggested bufferpool settings that worked for most people so far? It's a few posts above, I'll quote it belowJohn U.
OK update, I boosted my soundcard up to 24-bit, 192000KHz, added some HD cloud textures to FSX, boosted the LOD radius and autogen, and I flew from day to night switching lights numerous times and windowing numerous times with no problems whatsover (this is only in the default Cessna, but I've had this problem with the default even :() and I had no problems whatsoever. Reason why? 500Kb of bufferpools. I am not kidding I think I'm actually on to something. FSX RTM had a bufferpool of 1Mb but it got upped to 4MB after the service pack. This might be why nobody or so few had the problem when fsx first came out. Here is the line[bufferpools]PoolSize=500000Try it and report back please! There are no graphical anomalies either and FSX seems to get better FPS too. Loading of textures (gray panels) seem to have gone away too!! Only time I get anomalies is when bufferpools is too high. 0 may make things worse.John U.

I'm anxious to try, was depressed and gave up on fsx because of the texture losses and out of memory errors. Going to try that and get back to you later tonight

Ya I already tried the bufferpool aswell, set it to 500000, and this still occurs.

Hopefully it works for you. I am the same way. It reminds me when my parents would tell me to come in before it gets dark haha.

Sorry to hear that. Try decreasing it in steps of 100KBs from 400. If it still doesn't work when you reach 100KBs, decrease in steps of 20KBs (80KBs: 80000, 60KBs: 60000, etc) (I have mine @ 300KBs (PoolSize=300000))

Just thought of something really important before going to bed. Please discard any fiber_frame and texture mult bandwidth tweaks. Easiest way to do this is to delete the two lines from the CFG (the texture bandwidth line will be regenerated on the next fs start). Setting these has an affect on texture loading. Fiber frame is not needed because the frame rate slider controls the loading of scenery. Texture bandwidth mult, could increase the load on a video card, and the default value is fine and makes fsx smooth. Setting it higher than 40 could be making the system wait to write textures to the GPU's memory because it is already loaded trying to load the textures onto objects that are actually needed at the moment. If you prefer, you can even delete the whole CFG. Remember after you do this, put the bufferpools setting from above in the CFG. Good luck and happy flying. :(John U.

that eliminated all issues ...
... EXCEPT the freezes after very long (i.e. transatlantic) flights over water away from towers, as I just found out. Everything else now is fine with the MD11 (all other MD11 products alwas were fine, and still are). As I am entitled to upgrade my OS from Vista 64 to W7 64, this is what will be the next step.Sigmar Stadlmeier

After over a year and a half of trying to get rid of the disappearing textures and black screens I have finally found the solution. NickN was right as usual. Switching from Vista 64 to XP 64 is the magic bullet. And I am here to tell you I tried everything. I mean everything. I can't count how many times I completely reinstalled FSX. I even completely reinstalled my OS a couple of times. From different sound cards to video cards to different drivers, settings, everything... I tried everything that was ever suggested in this and many other forums. After installing XP64 sp2 (from disk) and flying for days and days without even closing FSX I no longer have these issues. I have run through the menus, switched to and from full screen, Started and closed task manager... nothing breaks FSX any longer. I honestly do not think FSX is truly "compatible" with Vista. It definitely wasn't in my case. If you are having these issues save yourself a lot of time and heartache and convert to XP64. Hope this helps and thank you so much for everything you have helped us with NickN.
