FSX Ground Textures

Featured Replies

Hi all,I recently purchased REX and it is absolutely stunning. The only issue now is that it makes the standard FSX ground textures very dull. Where's the best place (free for now) for ground textures, such as photo realistic type?Cheers.

You best bet for photorealistic and FREE is Tileproxy. Search the forums and you will find a ton of information!

Correct me if I'm wrong but Tile Proxy will remove all autogen (the 3D houses, bridges forests and so on). If you feel autogen is not something you would like to be without I'd recommend GEX (Ground Environment X). The current version covers USA and Canada only but the European version is supposed to be release "soon".You might want to consider getting UTX (Ultimate Terrain X) as well to get better looking coastlines, 3D night lightning and so on. I recommend photoscenery. Try www.blueskyscenery.com for some nice free scenery of the USA. Look here: http://realenvironmentxtreme.com/forum/ind...hp?topic=3283.0 for some recent screenshots of photoscenery in action. Look for any posts by me in that forum and you will find some more . MegasceneryX and MegasceneryEarth are both very good as well. cheers, Mark

Yes, UT is a 'must have' in my opinion, but that will not change the actual ground textures. For that you may want to consider Ground Enviroment X, which does.In addition, Adam Mills created some nice freeware improvements to the default ground textures if you can find them, as the AVSIM library is down, you might try elsewhere. You may also want to consider good third party landclass products as Cloud9 or SceneryTech, which both do a better job 'placing' the ground textures.

By way of an update, and as a big photoscenery fan, you may want to have a look at the stuff that Vero is producing now. They even have free samples to try. Its really top quality - they have a special optimizing process to colour adjust the imagery, there is seasonal variations, nightlighting and even special autogen. The end result is pretty amazing. Take a look here: http://vero-fs.com/Cheers, Mark

I have to recommend the NL2000v4 scenery. It's top notch stuff and absolutely stunning. And free :) After flying it you'll feel compelled to donate though, it's that good.

I'd highly recommend Playsim's Horizon VFR UK Photographic Scenery Vols. 1,2 and 3. It contains excellent terrain designed to fit the entire United Kingdom! Dave.

I'd go with GEX North America and Europe as a starter, then fill it in with photoreal scenery for certain areas if you like photo scenery.Personally as far as photo scenery goes I would recommend the following.MegaScenery SoCal, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Dallas, not to be confused with MegaScenery Earth which is good in some areas (Seattle) but really bad in others, namely Florida from what I have experienced. The only caveat to running some photoscenery from Blue Sky, NL2000, or Sim Saavy is that those packages dont include any night textures, so if you fly at night and dont disable those sceneries when flying over them at night you will have no city/town lights below you, which for me is a no go. However, if you fly in the day for the most part they are excellent as long as you dont mind no autogen in the BlueSky and Sim Saavy packages. NL2000 photo scenery has no night textures but does include autogen and other buildings/landmarks.POST EDIT: Didn't realise this thread was so old.

Dont worry, i opened a thread like this but you answered it..SO if i have REX nad then i put GEX over it i can continue with sceneries like:ORBXTongass XIceland X for example and upgrade specific areas of interest while all the other areas will be ENHANCED by GEX ...Is this correct?

Yes, but..REX has nothing to do with the ground textures, REX and GEX dont touch or overwrite each other. All REX does it does it replace the sky, clouds, water, runway/taxiway textures, some effects, etc.GEX will provide basically an overwrite of the default ground textures in either North America or Europe depending on which version you buy, so wherever you dont have custom ground scenery installed you will then see the GEX textures. Personally I like some photo real stuff as long as it has some autogen and night textures, for areas outside of those, you cant really beat GEX, unless of course your happy with the default FSX ground textures. So in essence if you have REX installed and then buy GEX North America or Euro package and install it, it wont do anything to REX since it covers different parts of the sim. You can then use REX and GEX in combination with any other addon sceneries you like.
