CS 757 review

Featured Replies

First of all, I think that was a very good review. Thanks for that! But, on one point, this review may confuse people. At the top, it says this aircraft is for FS9 and FSX, which is tru of course. However, you also say that the aicraft is updated to version 4.3, but this is only for the FSX version. The FS9 version still is at 2.1 and isn't going to be updated anymore. Can this maybe made clearer, for I'm sure there will be people reading this who don't own the aircraft and are not aware of this, or people who will have this aircraft may get confused.Other than that, great job, and I really liked how you also adressed general concerns and added in stuff like A2A Schockwave light configurations and that sort of stuff.

I agree nice review and touches on the good and bad. Pretty much sums up how I feel about the plane. My good and bad points for the plane Good 1) Amazing visuals! 2) workable frame rates for me 3) FMS works well for 90% of the flight Bad 4) Don't like the fuel management system 5) FMC doesn't like the preset speed contraints on departures (290 knots at 3000 is a no no for online flying) 6) Autolanding is a real pain to get to work (no problems on Level D 767, PMDG 747 and MD-11) 7) I have no cockpit sounds besides engine noise, tried the fixes and they don't work, very annoying (no key clicks no flap handle noise, would like callouts as well its nice to have 80 and V1 Vr called out as displays can be hard to see zoomed out) 8) night lighting in cockpit isn't great as you only seem to be able to have full dome lighting on (not a biggie but does spoil the beautiful cockpit a little at night when you realise how amazing it could look with proper night lighting)If they sorted those issues it would be a plane I flew a lot rather than not much.Paul

Thanks for the kind feedback. I tried to be as inquisitorial as possible! There is occasionally some good stuff on both the unofficial support forum and user contributions on the official Captain Sim one. (There is reason to believe a user-created night lighting fix will be greenlighted for download very soon.)

I know you've said that you don't feel qualified to talk about the FS9 version, but I'll ask anyway (and almost certainly, someone else will jump on it), but when I bought the Pro Pack and the freighter addon the other day, I decided to hold off on the Block F upgrade. I couldn't find any info on the CS site that explained what it does... So, what does it add to the package?

Tim,An articulate and generally good review, well done. However, your refusal to highlight the CS757's complete lack of (even FSX default) key assignments for the MCP, Heading, Course, etc is a failure to give the wide range of simmers, the important info they want to know before making a decision to purchase. (Which I'd suggest is the objective of a commercial review). You've made it clear in these forums that you couldn't give a hoot about needing to use this product entirely with mouse clicks, and that's absolutely your choice - but the fact is, a LOT of simmers do want to assign key commands for important things like the MCP controls. If it's important to a section of the community, it should be covered in the review. This is absolutely not about bashing Captain Sim - I wholely agree that they are the masters of visual art within the hobby but facts are facts; they are one of the only producers of high end complex add-ons that contain NO ability to assign even basic autopilot functions to key commands (like the heading knob) - that is surely significant enough to make it into a review, even if it is not important to you personally?David.

Well to be fair he did menton no key mapping.

Anyone tried if the registered FSUIPC's mouse macro system can be used to assign keystrokes to clickspots?

You completely ignored the first post regarding the FS9 version stuff. That's what I want to know also. If the FS9 version is still the 2.1 version it's a piece of incomplete crap whaich is full of bugs, and at nearly $100, dollars spent I couldn't reccomend CS stuff to ANYONE..Mike B. AAL 244

It's not necessary. The Block F upgrade is completely useless for those that buy the current FS9 base pack. It's only meant for those that aquired the 57 by buying the various blocks, but it's not necessary anymore.Do note that the FS9 version is still riddled with bugs! The reviewed CS757 is the FSX version (v4.3), but the FS9 is stuck on v2.1, so expect some problems!w4fej: That's the point I made in the openeing post with which I started this thread... Didn't anybody read the atcual opening post or what?

Well, no key mapping got a special highlighted mention among the likes & dislikes, so after I said it was not offered I don't know what else I can be expected to elaborate on. It may interest you to know that to whatever extent Captain Sim takes my communication on board, key mapping was particularly urged by me as a feature that should be supported. Perhaps their query about same on their forum represents a raised awareness. In the end the review consists of my best assessment of the evidence and my overall opinion. AVSIM provides mAny opportunities for people to opine. The review is primarily to give readers an idea of what to expect; in this cAse no key mapping. I don't feel I was misleading. As for FS9, I don't own it anymore and was not tasked to review it, nor am I qualified to comment. From what I gather there might be significant differences. If an FS9 review is warranted that's above my pay grade. If there is sufficient inyerest, I'm sure a CS FS9 review by someone else would be considered.Thank you, again for your kind attention.

The review doesn't strike me as harbouring a 'refusal to highlight' the key mapping issue, it's only natural that if someone is happy to use mouseclicks and wheels in the VC, that they would not concentrate heavily on using peripherals or key assignments, after all, I don't use Go-Flight modules, but me not using them, or rarely mentioning them, is not a refusal to acknowledge them, they just don't figure highly in my thoughts. In fairness to TC, although the issue came up in a discussion the other day in the forums, most reviews are submitted weeks or even months before they go up on AVSIM, so I'm sure he would have covered it more if aware of a strength of feeling about it, and in any case he did actually mention it in the review, if not in great depth. It's true that the objective of a review is to help a wide variety of simmers come to a decision on things, but it does state at the end of all AVSIM reviews that it is the reviewer's personal opinion, and they can only really base that on their own experiences.I thought it was an excellent review myself, especially for a first stab at it, and with such a contentious product. It was both entertaining and informative.Al

One of the best-written reviews I've read. I have got the 757 but I'm a relative newcomer to airliners so I learnt a lot as well. I look forward to more. Many thanks.

I would also like to see somebody have a go at reviewing the FS9 version with or without patching. Reading the posts here I think the conclusions are :- FS9 - Forget it FSX - Better but still room for improvementAnbody else concerned about different standards of patching for the FS versions? I hope FS9 users like me do not become the poor relations in this popular hobby.

I'm not asking for a review of the FS9 version, that review has been done a long time ago. The only thing I mentioned, was that it may be confusing to people that the FSX version is somewhat different in terms of buginess, than the FS9 version, and that it would have been good if it had been stated clearly that you are reviewing the FSX version, not the FS9 version. From the review you'd think both versions are equal, which is not the case. This hasn't got a lot to do with being qualified or not, it's a fact that the FSX 757 is version 4.3, meaning it's updated past the FS9 757, which is stuck at version 2.1. I know, I'm very nitpicky, but I just thought it's an important fact to mention.Really, that's the only comment I'm making, for the rest I think the review is very good, and I hope to see more reviews by you.

I think the point is well-taken. I took pains to explain the review was based on 4.3 FSX only, for this very reason, but the "boilerplate" at the top does say FS9 in addition to FSX. While this is true in the sense that there is a Captain Sim available for FS9, it is absoluetly wrong as far as this review having anything to do with FS9. I will pass this issue along to be addressed at the editorial level by higher powers than your humble correspondent.
