December 3, 200916 yr Let me preface this post by saying that I was certainly among a majority that did not think this bug had a fix, and even though this may not be a complete fix, the information being compiled here is important, and IMO will lead to a fix. This initial observation points to a clear culprit in causing this bug, and someone in the community will recognize the issue if we continue to dig...So, my results:Less conclusive...I loaded 20 airports in FSX with DX10 preview active. Of those, 15 were stock FSX, 5 were addon AFCADs. Almost all were 100% asphalt texturing, however six had mixed asphalt/concrete, and one had a grass apron.Of the full 20, 15 displayed flickering. Of the five without flicker, only one was not stock (KDAB).I loaded each of the 15 in ADE (I loaded the 4 non-stock AFCAD bgls) and added a small triangular asphalt apron, as small triangular concrete apron, a two-node asphalt taxiway and a two-node concrete taxiway. These BGLs were saved into FSX\Addon Scenery\Scenery with the naming convention "KABC_ADEX_DX10.bgl". After creating the fixes, i scanned FSX folders with airport scanner to verify no duplicates were inadvertently created.Upon examination in FSX, 12 were fixed, however three continue to show flicker despite the fix.The airports that did not require a fix:KTEB, KTPF, KDAB(not stock), MYCA and MYEFThe airports that were fixed:KLEB (not stock), KRUT, KCDW, KEEN, KACY, KCDK (not stock), KPVD, KEYW (not stock), KFLL(not stock), MYAM, MYBS, KCRPThe airports that were NOT fixed:KMMU, KBVY, and KBTVObviously, those percentages while derived from a small number of facilities, don't bode well for an automatic fix for all airports. I am trying to see if there are any obvious features of those three airports that jump out, however nothing is coming to mind so far. I will also continue to alter those AFCADs tonight to see if converting the textures to something else, or adding a differently textured taxiway or apron correct the flicker there. If anyone has time to experiment, I'd love to see if anyone else sees the same issues with those three. Thanks,sg [email protected] | 32gb RAM | EVGA GTX1080 8gb | Mostly P3Dv5 (also IL2:BoX, DCS, XP11)
December 3, 200916 yr I don't know why you still see flickering in KMMU.I didn't try the other airport but using one of the methods above definitly works for KMMU.As I said before, why using the "quadruple thingy" when there is a simpler method that works? :--)If someone is smart enough to write a script for an automatic solution, he (or she) will have to check first if the stock airport is a concrete or an asphalt one and apply a patch with only one addition or change. - PC Hardware: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D // Asus ROG Crosshair X870E HERO // 2x32Gb Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 // ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4090 OC Edition // 4Tb Corsair NVMe M.2 MP600 // Corsair 1600W PSU Samsung Odyssey Arc 55" curved 165 Hz monitor. - Simulator Hardware: VIRPIL Constellation Alpha Prime + VIRPIL VPC Universal Control Panel - #3 + MOZA AY210 Force Feedback Yoke + WINWING URSA MINOR 32 Throttle & PAC Metal + WINWING SKYWALKER Metal Rudder Pedals + WINWING Airbus FCU & EFIS + WINWING Boeing 3N PAP + WINWING MCDU-32 + WINWING PFP-4 + WINWING PFP 3-N + WINWING PFP-7.
December 3, 200916 yr It would be great if there were a global solution to this.Isn't there a global asphalt object that could be swapped out for a concrete, and fix the whole world? On another note, does AA work correctly now with DX10?
December 3, 200916 yr The airports that were NOT fixed:KMMU, KBVY, and KBTVIf anyone has time to experiment, I'd love to see if anyone else sees the same issues with those three. Thanks,sgHi Gridley,I just tried all three, and got all three fixed. To do it, I did a 'double fix', where I added a two-node concrete taxiway (using the 'add taxi link' tool), and a three vertice concrete apron polygon (using the 'add apron' tool, and not the 'add apron link' tool) and stuck them both under buildings on each airport. Obviously, I only used concrete since they were all asphalt airports. I did both apron and taxiway just to try and fix once, instead of having to go back if it needed an apron instead of a taxiway or vice-versa. I'm attaching a zip that includes the modified airports for you to test. Let me know if they worked for you or not. :)-GeorgeEdit: Oops, didn't realize I couldn't attach a zip. Can a zip be attached in a pm, or is there somewhere else I can toss it for you to test the airports?Edit again: You can download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?j2zytuizzxm Happy Flying! -George
December 3, 200916 yr Gridley,One other thing I've noticed is that if I load up several airports in a row in ADE, *and* changed surfaces several times in the toolbar, that eventually the surface type doesn't change to the correct one selected in the surface type drop down when I lay the item down. For example, one of the airports I was working on was asphalt, and so needed concrete added. Even though I was using the taxiway link tool with concrete selected as the surface, when I went into the game and checked, the airport was still flickering. When I re-started ADE and reloaded the airport into it, the taxiway that I had added showed asphalt as the surface instead of the concrete that I *know* I put down (in fact the toolbar still reflected that fact). I deleted the taxiway, added it back, and recompiled, and the flickering stopped. I know it takes a bit longer, but on my end I'm getting myself into the habit of closing and restarting ADE after editing every two airports. Naturally, that could be something specific to my configuration, but just thought I'd throw it out there since it was something I've personally experienced.Good luck! :)-George Happy Flying! -George
December 3, 200916 yr As I said before, why using the "quadruple thingy" when there is a simpler method that works? :--)What I'm looking to do is have a program create a bgl which would place the right object or set of objects at every airport in the database without any human intervention whatsoever. To do that, we need to know what that object or set of objects is. It may be that there is no one magic bullet, that each airport will require its own fix, but I'm hoping that some set of objects will work everywhere so I can just drop it 1/4 mile from every airport reference point under a shack or something. Will revisit KMMU and the others tonight - maybe i was just tired. ;) And thanks for the tip, George - didn't think to check that. I did have ADE crash on me due to an out of memory error midway through as well... [email protected] | 32gb RAM | EVGA GTX1080 8gb | Mostly P3Dv5 (also IL2:BoX, DCS, XP11)

December 3, 200916 yr Just downloaded your file. I am speechless, I am happy! December 4, 200916 yr Just downloaded your file. I am speechless, I am happy! So many thanks for your effort - please make many more flicker-free airports for us!MichaelIf you're talking to me, then glad it works for you. :) Of course, the real credit here goes to james_2k for figuring this out, and pointing us all in the right direction to start getting these airports fixed. I am working on more flicker-free airports (as I'm sure several others in this thread are), so I'm sure more and more will become available over time. I've chosen Florida for my first project, so I'm going through each FSX stock airport in Florida to find out which ones need fixing and compiling a list of them. I'm up to cities that start with the letter "J" now and once I've got the list done, I'll go through and try to fix each of them. When I've verified that they are, in fact, fixed, I'll upload a zip to the library with the fixed airports for the entire state. I'll probably keep working my way up the east coast, state by state (over time of course) up to the canadian border, obviously skipping any airports/states/regions that other folks may get done in the meantime. If you weren't talking to me, well, I guess ignore the first sentance of that last paragraph, but I'm still working on doing Florida lol. :D-George Happy Flying! -George
December 4, 200916 yr Hey guys!(First post, BTW)Thanks so much for figuring this out -- Excellent job! :( I'll be testing this tomorrow (training tonight at Chick-fil-A). Other than nHancer not working and airports flickering, DX10 looks better overall on my rig, and now I can use it without the airport problem! :(Just so you guys know, I'm planning on fixing all the airports in Virginia and D.C. -- school permitting. Since most of you probably wouldn't be at a GA airport in Virginia (and for those who like the Int'l airports), I'll fix all the big ones first (KBWI, KDCA, KIAD, KORF, KPHF, KRIC) -- stock only.

If everyone picks an area/state/region to work on, we could probably knock out all the airports in the country in a few months (if Gridley doesn't figure out a way to automate it in the meantime.) Way to step up to the plate!-George Happy Flying! -George
