REX, I don't know guys...

Featured Replies

I just stayed up last night till 3am trying to find a decent sky texture that was universal (meaning something I could use and not change with every new weather system and/or season). What I was finding is everything but that. Some sky textures are too bright others too dull and others just plain weird. This is unfortunate because I love the Dusk/Dawn options, cloud texture, runways lights, and runway/taxiway options. It's just finding the right day texture that's becoming a huge problem. What I had previously was a combination setup through Activesky 6.5 that was great. I may have to use that in combination with Rex's other textures but Rex doen't like to adhere to the options of what to exclude. I have yet to have Rex leave my water textures alone when I compile. Let's face it ZINERTEK - ULTIMATE WATER ADVANCED beats out Rex's options ten fold. The problem with wrong sky texture is you can have options like Rex's that actually look great in the distance but the problem with this is FS9 within itself doesn't look good with unlimited visibility. You have to have some haze or else FS9's ugly faults start to show in the distance. I have no more than 30 mile visibility set in my setup and although there's a setting in REX I'm not seeing this visibility restriction in FS9 once the textures are compiled. You try setting 30 miles or less with many of REX's options and it ends up looking like an overly foggy day. Another thing is many of REX's day sky textures look close to dusk even though your flying at 11:00am in July. So I have to ask the question what's the best day sky textures you guys are finding because I may have to go back to what I had before and use various features of REX like the clouds (if that's possible, at this point it still overwrites my water textures everytime I compile) and skip others like the Day sky textures?

I like Arizona Chilly (I think that is what it's called). There are a few others I like as well, but I will have to go in and check what the names are. I will let you know what those are when I get a chance to load up REX.

Hi Guy's.Well, this morning before I went to work I was all for buying this as soon as I got home, but now after reading this post, and the ones in the other thread I am having second thoughts. For example, I do use GE Pro as well as ASv 6.5, I also use FE.If I want to have timed weather up-dates rather than this circle / radius up date thing, then I just un-check a box in REX to enable ASv to set and up-date the weather. Then I do like the GE Pro ground textures as I feel that they are great, especially the desert and rural areas and the night texture sets as well. Then there is the point about the flight planner. For example, I can create a Flight Plan in FS Nav and export it to anywhere from FS9 itself to either PMDG, PSS, or SB4 etc, I'm not sure if REX will do this.If it doesn't, and as with some of the other points I mentioned above, then all I would really be gaining from REX is cloud texture sets! This seems rather an expensive way of aquiring nicer looking clouds to me.This is putting me off buying it now. What do you guy's think! Thanks.

Steve.

Dillon,Best sky textures come from here:http://secure.simmarket.com/sl-real-sky-pro-edition.phtmlOnly thing i use from REX is clouds, water...but sky NO! Cause it look unnatural, at least to me.

My Specification: I CAN RUN FSX IN MAX SETTINGS....i don't care about dell, bell, amd, intel, 60000 wats power supply or alien made graphic card....

Oh my, so now it looks as though we buy REX for the clouds, and then buy yet another program for the sky?I think I can officially count myself out of this now guy's.

You don't need to buy it, if you don't like it. I bought that add on, long before REX came out. Here is few pictures in combination with REX.40852939.jpg 35369012.jpg 20568812.jpg

I am holding off my buy after reading this in the manual:1) It

I am more than happy with REX as I bought it purely for the cloud textures!Even though it still has a few bugs, you can't beat ASA for the actual WX generation. So currently I useGEPro to install the ground textures (and the sky textures at the moment)UTE to install the landclassREX to install the Cloud texturesASA to generate the WX(oh, and of course RC4 for 1st class ATC).I too am not overly enamoured with the REX sky textures. They seem a bit gaudy and unrealistic for European flying.I might take a look at real sky pro, looks good!I would however recommend REX 100%, just for the cloud textures!Neil

I dont get it, whats the big deal? Keep using Active sky for weather generation. seriously the clouds alone are worth the money especially if you have a high end system that lets you max out the sim and your GPU settings.Rob

I have REX for:1) clouds2) water + wave animation3) taxiway/runway etc textures4) lights/sun/lightningFor the rest I use GEPro and UTE, and it works great together. I'll probably end up buying Zinerteks weather thingy for the rain texture it provides. But for now, I'm happy with what I have.

We have functions that the metar automatically updates every 30 minutes if the aircraft has not already gone outside of the range setting in the Configuration Manager. So basically this is how it works:If you set on your tarmac for an hour you should see the weather fire at least on the initial startup and one more time.If you are flying for an hour and you set you range lower than you will get an update in weather everytime you are about to fly outside of the range or every 30 minutes which ever comes first. We need to correct this in the manual for it doesn't clearly state this at all - yet the code is there for it.
We are talking REX2004 now dont we ?

For clouds I use Pablo Diaz's. See below. And for haze i use fs9envis.zip available in the avsim library Here The combination works well also with "soft horizons" also at avsim. Also I use FsMetar weather engine which updates every time the a/c is in the vicinity of a reporting station. Thus you don't have to travel for long without the weather being updated.Vololiberista

It took me a few tries to find a combination i liked (i just used the random function). But the clouds, water, taxi/runway textures are well worth it!I also decided to use AV6.5 for weather. The REX weather program is too slow; it takes forever to initialize for some reason. I also couldn't find a way for it to display the weather in text form.Overall, im very impressed with REX. It makes everything much sharper ingame. I can't believe how good FS9 can look with great addons. And all this at a constant 60+ fps-feng
