April 13, 201016 yr I was able to add the 470, but not the 480.I guess I'll have to wait until the 480s are really in stock. My concern is that they are not 2 meg cards. When I purchased the Vapor X it was a 1 meg card. Now they have 2 meg cards for the same price.I'm glad I returned the Vapor X. The 480 will rock.Let's get some reviews. MSFS
April 13, 201016 yr According to reviews they run hot and loud when fan is turned up.Yes I know, I ws referring to the claim that the heat generated would render a CPU overclock inadvisable, would compromise a CPU overclock. This is not the case, as the majority of the heat is vented out of the case, as a result of the graphics card coolers design.I'm not saying there wouldn't be an increase in enclosure temperature as a result of the hot running card, but in a reasonably designed case, there's no way this would compromise an overclock. As for noise, I suspect that once the aftermarket cooler manufactures, like Thermalright for example, get their hands on the card, we will have some decent aftermarket options that will be quieter if not cooler as well.I thought CPU air coolers had pretty much reached their limits of efficiency, until I purchased a Noctua NHD-14. Fantastic cooler, overclocking the 920 to 4.2 and very cool. With a little help from Innovative Coolings Diamond paste. So personally, I think there is hope for a quieter cooler aftermarket solution for the 470/480.
April 13, 201016 yr Just wondering how well this card runs FSX. How hot and how loud is this card? Thanks.I cant say for the 480 but I installed my 470 last night. I played a few hours of FSX with it and I like it very much. I've seen a much better difference going from the GTX275 to the GTX470 than when I went from a 8800GT to the GTX275. No huge increase in framerate, (I would say about 10% above the GTX275) but much smoother without any stuttering. Need to do lots more testing toughNoise/Temps are not really an issue in FSX as the card doesnt get much hot while running FSX. The fan stays at the default 40% or barely increase and is pretty much silent at this speed. In other games it's different tough, in Bad Company 2, it gets in the high 80's and the fan increase in the 60 to 65% range. Never seen the fan go higher than 65%, which is not silent, but not too loud. Overall I would say that the 470 is similar to temps/noise profile I was getting my GTX275. Slightly hotter/louder but not much. i7 930 @ 4.4 ghz water cooled (1.44vcore) | GA-X58A-UD7 | 6GB DDR3 G.Skills @ 840mhz CAS7| EVGA GTX 480 | 2 Intel 80GB SSD in Raid 0 | 1 TB Hitachi HD | Corsair TX750 PSU | Windows 7 x64 Ultimate | FSX w/acceleration | REX 1.0 | Ultimate Traffic II | Level-D767 & PMDG 747 | UTX-CAN | FSGenesis Mesh | ASA

Hope my GTX480 will arrive on Saturday...

I'll be doing the same tests with an eVGA GTX 480 SC edition. (got mine from mwave.com and they called me to cancel, out of stock) so I'm still F5'ing newegg.I use this link to track availability:http://nowinstock.net/computers/nvidia/gtx480/
April 13, 201016 yr Wow I read this thing about "3D Vision!" So if you have the right equipment you can play a game in 3D similar to how Blu ray now comes out in 3d?Hmmm | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

I'll be doing the same tests with an eVGA GTX 480 SC edition.Right now I am using an un-modified CFG that FSX has rebuilt after I deleted the old one. I havent tried any BufferPools tweak yet. I'll do some more flying with the "plain" CFG to get a good feeling on how it perform and later I can test with different BufferPools options and report back. i7 930 @ 4.4 ghz water cooled (1.44vcore) | GA-X58A-UD7 | 6GB DDR3 G.Skills @ 840mhz CAS7| EVGA GTX 480 | 2 Intel 80GB SSD in Raid 0 | 1 TB Hitachi HD | Corsair TX750 PSU | Windows 7 x64 Ultimate | FSX w/acceleration | REX 1.0 | Ultimate Traffic II | Level-D767 & PMDG 747 | UTX-CAN | FSGenesis Mesh | ASA
April 13, 201016 yr Please do come back after doing the BP=0 test. Don't forget to add the other tweaks that ******* suggests.I have a feeling that as drivers mature you will see dramatic fps improvements. Going from an old 182.50 to the 196.21 and GP=0, I doubled my framerates in certain dense areas/sceneries. (15-30 jump) that's a big jump.If I'm not mistaken the 197.13 drivers works with the 470 and 480s. I hope nvidia delivers a better driver by the time I get my 480. MSFS
April 13, 201016 yr Please do come back after doing the BP=0 test. Don't forget to add the other tweaks that ******* suggests.Do you have a link to a thread that lists the others tweaks? If I'm not mistaken the 197.13 drivers works with the 470 and 480s. I hope nvidia delivers a better driver by the time I get my 480.Last friday nVidia released version 197.41 only for the 470/480. that's what I am using, but, yeah, we are still some time away from mature drivers. i7 930 @ 4.4 ghz water cooled (1.44vcore) | GA-X58A-UD7 | 6GB DDR3 G.Skills @ 840mhz CAS7| EVGA GTX 480 | 2 Intel 80GB SSD in Raid 0 | 1 TB Hitachi HD | Corsair TX750 PSU | Windows 7 x64 Ultimate | FSX w/acceleration | REX 1.0 | Ultimate Traffic II | Level-D767 & PMDG 747 | UTX-CAN | FSGenesis Mesh | ASA
April 14, 201016 yr Do you have a link to a thread that lists the others tweaks?Here:http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=281538But, its fairly long... so, I would suggest to use simply two tweaks:[GRAPHICS]HIGHMEMFIX=1and[bufferPools]UsePools=0the first, is for stability. the second, is 100% about performance. the [bufferPools] UsePools=0 tweak, should offer a 'massive' performance improvement under 'complex' scenery conditions, so make sure you make a fair before/after comparison.give it a try and report back ;) I'll be doing the same when my GTX 480 arrives (tomorrow)
April 14, 201016 yr The 197.41 seem to be working well with some members. This remains to be experienced with the 480.I'm excited! But not nearly as excited as *******. :( MSFS
April 14, 201016 yr I'm excited! But not nearly as excited as *******. :(The only bad thing, is that I had to get a GIGABYTE GTX 480... and not the SuperClocked eVGA one... I spent nearly the ENTIRE day refreshing newegg... (last night, I sucesfully completed an order on MWAVE.com but they called me to say the card was not available anymore) so, you can imagine the frustration...So, finally got it from newegg, ordered UPS next day, should be here tomorrow at 2:00PM (thats when the UPS guy comes to my condo) so expect some results at around 6:00PM :) My objective is to test the card ability to use BP=0 while maintaining 100% stability, also, check how it compares to my current GTX 285 (which is on sale from now on)stay tuned...
April 14, 201016 yr Great thread guys!I just ordered a EVGA 480SC from TigerDirect yesterday. I should get it in the mail tomorrow, and then I'll report back with FSX tests. Yay!
April 14, 201016 yr I'm also interested in how much better the water is going to look.I think that with BP=0 we will see high fps. Plus, more eye candy.Looking forward to the reviews. MSFS
