Anyone using a GTX 480 with FSX (sp2)?

Featured Replies

Just wondering how well this card runs FSX. How hot and how loud is this card? Thanks.

The heat and power consumption are pretty well known from the reviews... it's bad from what I've heard. Near 100C and quite loud, 300W or so TDP. I'm waiting until the "refresh" cards (485 etc) that will likely solve some of those issues.

You'd have to be crazy to put one of these cards into an overclocked system. Unless you have water cooling, the heat load would swamp your CPU cooler. This leaves few options for GPU upgrades at the moment. Is the HD5870 a viable option for FSX?Cheers,Noel.

If you don't mind screen tearing, its decent. Everyone and their mom says the 285 is the way to go though.I'm considering getting the 480. If it performs better, overall, than the 285, I'll get it. I run my case with the panel off and a fan blowing cold air from my air conditioner on it just cause Thailand is so friggin' hot right now. Might start looking for a water cooling setup anyways, because of that.Anyways, GTX 480 isn't released for a couple more days, isn't it?

The GTX480 will not be available before 13.04 - 16.04. I already ordered one. Since I have a water cooled system and work for a large energy corporate, I don't worry about heat and power consumption :( Will post some benches here at AVSIM for sure!

We'll, given that the cooler is designed so that most of the heat is vented out of the case, that sounds like a bit of an exaggeration. :(

According to reviews they run hot and loud when fan is turned up.

I am also interested in a review of a GTX-480 user with FSX. Please post your results here, when you get your card. I would also like to know how this card would perform with the combination of Matrix Triple Head 2 Go.

You have a nice case. What I did in my case (LianLi A77) was to use 2000 rpm fans and also a 2000 rpm on the cpu cooler. Runs cool now!

******* will have one of these next week btw guys - he's gonna run a bunch of tests for the community, including what effect the extra power has on his UsePools=0 method.

Good news! ******* previously stated:
The reason, is due to ATI's and nVidia's different architectures. *HOWEVER* the new GTX 470 & GTX 480 will make all this vSync OFF and nHancer discussion completely irrelevant, because YOU WILL be able to run all your IQ mod's with no adverse impact even with BP=0
And I ordered a GTX480, but had to cancel that order after reading this statement by *******:
If you wan't to be 100% sure, I can report back once I get mine and I'll make a post on the forum for others to see. I can download nHancer, install it, enable vSync, up the resolution and try to kill the card.. lets way next week ;)
I hope that ******* is right about the 480.

Yes, the 5870 is a good option for FSX. I started with a 285GTX on this system, and when it worked, it worked well. I developed a nightmare of recurring black-screen crashes that apparently is the result of a design deficiency in the board's power regulation circuitry. If you google "nvidia black screen" or "nvidia nvlddmkm" you'll get a sense of the widespread and unaddressed nature of the problem.Truth be told, I liked the image quality of the 285GTX a little better, but I spent hundreds of hours trying to exorcize the intermittent demons out of it and the 295GTX that the manufacturer offered as a replacement. I've been an exclusively nVidia builder since ATI screwed me by stopping support on a video card I bought in the early 1990s...but the problems with this 285 caused me to finally stray and look that way again. So far the 5870 has been rock stable with the catalyst 10.2 and 10.3 drivers.CheersBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO
