FEX or REX?

Featured Replies

I've never tried REX/REX2. From some screenies I've seen, they look pretty good. But screenshots are usually only part of the full story.I have, however, been a happy user of FEX since release. I have amazing clouds and great water textures. I've never seen a REX screenie I can't replicate in FEX.Can those of you who are saying "REX!" please say whether you also have FEX?I'm just trying to see whether we're actually comparing the products - or merely shouting justification for the one we've bought :)

I have both. As mentioned above, I definitely prefer FEX for water, animations, sky textures. REX2 is for taxiways/runways and I do believe the REX2 weather engine to be superior to ASX hands down. I will guess there are probably several useable cloud sets and sky hues, but I gave up after auditioning several that just looked too extreme to be realistic, too dominant in any one color--in a word: unrealistic. I'm wondering how many out there have both and prefer REX2 for basic textures. Haven't heard of one yet, but that must just be because of the small 'n'.Noel

Just a quick note that Aerosimulations left the industry, and Flight1 has the code base and we have been releasing updates recently, and moving the product along in various directions. So yes, it is not handled by Aerosimulations anymore. Most everything was turned over to Flight1 for handling.

Thanks,

As I put in my first post at the top of this thread I own both mainly becasue FEX was the first out and need something then for the clouds, sky , and water. However I bought REX about 5 months ago and after fiddling around with different sky and cloud set I have found a combo that I think is as realistic looking or more realistic looking that what I had in FEX. However for me where REX stand out is all the other texture replacements you get with it besides just sky, clouds, water and water animations. If I had neither FEX or REX now and was going to buy one, I would get REX just because you get a lot more for the money in terms of what you can do and it has a weather engine, although I dont use it since I have ASA.The only thing REX cant do that FEX can is let you actually build your own cloud sets. Although I have never tried it since there are already so many sets to choose from. I would say that its also true that you can get the same look using either FEX or REX. I posted some screens a long time ago and a lot people commented that they like the REX sky and clouds, but seemed disappointed to know that it was FEX when I told them. REX imho shines though with the runway, taxiway, markings, lightnening textures/effects, which FEX dont have.It will be interesting to see what Flight1 does with FEX. Since I still have it installed on my HD maybe in the future I will use it again after more things come available.

Ok, I apologize for jumping on your case. :( I agree that right now, REX is the best bang for the buck and they are great people. I just took exception to your inference that FEX was a dead product. From what I understand, Flight1 plans to continue development of the FEX product beyond just changing the GUI. So it's still a viable option for someone to consider, IMHO.

Ok, I stand corrected. :( I won't be posting anymore that FEX is dead, because it clearly isn't! I am very interested in what Flight1 is going to do with it: as I said, I own AND use both, so this is a nice surprise! But after being promised a patch for a problem I have with FEX (way back when I talked with Chris on the phone), I have to see first before I believe... :(

Some really interesting replies here.I am quite at a loss to know what to buy.I have FEX, and like it. REX, it appears, won't do much for my clouds and water since it is similar in those respects to FEX.The consensus seems to be that ASE has better weather than REX - but at least 2 or 3 people say the opposite! If I get REX I get weather and runway textures, but the clouds/water are kinda wasted. So I'm tempted to go for ASE and use that with FEX. I'll miss out on runways etc, but on balance I'll end up with a reasonably complete sim with only one extra purchase.Though I'm loathe to spend 30-odd quid on a weather program when I've never really fallen out with the default. Seems hard to imagine that a 3rd-party weather addon can really make that much difference to the winds/turbulence etc. But again, many people seem to rave about ASE.Any more thoughts, anyone? Decisions, decisions!

ASE is one I cant live without. It seems like spending the money on it is kind of boring since it doesn't actually come with textures, scenery, or some type of eye candy besides the UI, but it totally transforms the look and feel of the weather in FSX provided you get the options set up right. Sometimes I will do a quick flight with the FSX realtime weather then close FSX, start ASA and reboot FSX to the same flight to see the difference. I can attest that the representation to what I see outside my house is a lot more like what I get with ASE than what I get with the default FSX weather engine. One other things that I love is that since I fly airliners mostly, ASE gets rid of those horrible wind shifts that sometime cause overspeeds, etc. The wind is depicted much better with ASE.Even though I own REX I still have never tried using its weather engine, so I cant comment on it.

I have had several versions of Hi Fi weather over the years, and to me, realism is far superior in REX2 weather. Totally variable, wonderful visibility changes, nice transitions between stations instead of islands of weather I saw in ASX. I never use ASX since picking up REX. I'd grab REX2 because of several texture effects, PLUS weather, and if you need more textures they are there. As I say, I had not tried anywhere near all of them, but I'm sure there must be some keepers. I wish they would produce some more sky sets with REX2. I would really like some more realistic sky color sets. With ASE you will only get weather. Hopefully it is way better than ASX if you end up with ASE.
