To tweak or not to tweak?

Featured Replies

HelloJust wondering if any one could share their experience.I have a I7 920 clocked at 4GHZ with GTX 285 6GB ram etc and various addons.Do not wish to purchase a 480GTX at all.I have set FSX up as per Nick Ns guide and I am 90% happy with the performance I am getting. Generally around 30-60 FPS and 90 % smooth.ALthough with Major clouds or at Heathrow and busy Airports frames do die etc.I cant say I really enjoy tweaking. So my questions isWith all the new tweaking developments that Bojote has been getting much acclaim forWill I see any benefit in perfroming the new tweaks and if yes.Can I just add Bojotes tweaks to the tweaks I have already implemented from Nick N?Will (Bojotes tweaks) imrprove FPS and make for smoother flying?

Hard to say. They didn't work for me, but others have reported significant improvements.I would say, try them and see, and revert to your backup if it doesn't work for you.IAN

Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia RTX5080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2024 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)

Would you could just try.. I added BP=0 and even FFTF=0 and all was fine ..no blurries, no need for external limiter and some smoother fsx. (still need to test some more tho)However your PC could crash or run worse.

If you don't enjoy tweaking, then don't. Be happy with what you've got. I do enjoy tweaking to a certain extent, but last week I rebuild my fsx.cfg and didn't add ANY tweaks anymore (for the first time in years!) and I am quite happy with my rock stable FSX. You can certainly gain something from tweaking, but expect a lot of trial and error and a less stable system.I have seen (and participated in) a LOT of tweakposts but in the end a lot of people reverted to what they had before: unfortunately people usually only post when a tweak (seems to) work, but they hardly ever post something when they removed the tweak or went back to a non-tweaked cfg. So don't let all those positive tweakposts fool you because quite often they do not tell the whole story. :(

Tweaking is like overclocking. It brings you performance, but also possible unstability if not done right. Do it if you get a kick out of it.

I want to laugh, but I understand how you feel.If one is 90% content, then the problem is the 10%. Will tweaks make you 10% happier or ruin your 90% of happiness? If you don't want to buy the gtx480 and are ambivalent about tweaking, then I would suggest that you stay only 90% happy.Tweaking can be confusing, especially if you have lots of payware sceneries and airplanes. Everyone has an opinion, but only you can to decide if you want to devote the time to "try" different tweaks, that might or might not work.

All this tweaking talk over the last few months got me thinking. Someone with programming skills (I don't have any) should make a small app that allows us to modify the config several times and save versions of it with comments. Then you could quickly go back to a previous version if things got out of hand. I know that I can simply add my own comments and use a manual process to save versions, but an app that lists all the copies with comments would make incremental restoration extremely useful and simple to do.Just a thought which I lack the skills to implement.Thaellar

All we are trying to do is optimize FSX for the new hardware platforms. It depends on if You either want it to or not and if you got the 'tuning' bug.jja

I got caught up in the tweak craze also, the first bunch from ******* worked like a champ. Then I got greedy and went for many others. My FSX went from stable to dread awful, no CTD's but terrible graphics. I then backed out the tweaks that I thought were mucking up my graphics and without doing a cfg regen, I now have a very stable system with GREAT graphics and won't touch my FSX.CFG. :( Bottom line, know what your HW can and cannot do. Next if you want, add one tweak at a time and make sure the system is stable and the results are what you were looking for. If not back it out and go FLY.Bob

There is such a utility made available by ORBX RIGHT HERE that I admit I bought but have not used. It is as misleading and unhelpful to brag about having "No Tweaks" as it is to blindly adopt and proclaim the value of every idea to come along. Certain adjustments to the FSX cfg file will yield substantial improvements in FSX, some will not. To jump on some misled bandwagon that promotes renewed ignorance of substantial advances in FSX tuning is just plain nonsense, and not in the best interest of the advancement of the hobby. In this matter, as in most things, the louder the voice in the crowd does not always mean the better the advice.Stephen :(

my system is something close to yours. try these tweaks, they worked fantastic for me. If they don't not much ventured not much gained, easy to do.

The tweaking is great, even fun but the examples of blanket statment that much of the tweaks come with are part of what I see as a problem - like absolute fixes, it will not crash etc...BUT then you find out that they only test FSX at low resolution or with no AI or never checked in spot view or at a busy hub or that you have to turn settings down etc etc..When to begin with if they/we learn to tune your OS and FSX first (including lowering settings if you must). Also learn how to run a proper benchmark saved flight and log it thru fraps...to eliminate the placebo effect.People have been making blanket statments many times just dont apply or are flat out wrong, why? because they often time dont reveal the limitted scope of testing like only in certain kinds of add-ons or under certain conditions ......because why? To feed someones inflated ego? Or can't admit it doesn't work at high settings or in this situation It locks up, breaks, corrupts or blurrs textures over fast low flight or crashes or or or take your pick. But ohhhh it works! ITs fixed!...Hey I am just saying to cool it on the BIG premature statments so that we can eliminate so much waisted time, like Geofa and the guy from Orbx said - Its hardware folks. learn how to use it and forget about the snake oil.Hope I didn't sound like a total wimp this time OR hurt anyones feelings...If I did please feel free to ask one of the mods to remove anything, its just my politic free opinion.

If you want a CFG "Tool" this thing does it all and more, edits every cfg there is, Scenery, hardware etc and even explains them.German and english - BTW the FSX version is called the "2006" version - it is newer than that however:http://www.wolfgang-picheta.de/
