October 23, 201015 yr As far as the "me generation' or the "X generation" I agree that the younger generation, 25 and below, are largly lacking in manners and politeness. I believe a lot of it comes down to parents letting the kids run free cause they are either too busy to mind them, don't care what they do, or are afraid that it they do punish them the kids will call CPS and get them arrested for child abuse. It was a lot different in my day, even though I am only in my 30's, when I did wrong my parents would spank my butt so hard that it would cross my mind before I acted up again, or I would get sent to my room which at the time had no cell phone, no PC, or any of the other fun items that todays kids have. These days it seems like some parents are almost scared of their kids and don't disapplin them at all. Too bad because I can only imagine how society will be in the next 10 to 20 years. You were lucky. I used to have to get up 5 hours before I went to bed, work 36 hours a day, AND pay for the privilege, and when I got home my dad used to thrash us to death with his belt. But tell the younger generation that, and they won't believe you...[with apologies to Monty Python...]Ian
October 23, 201015 yr This is a good topic. I have been to many forums over the years and they all share some of the same traits. It doesn't matter if it is a FS forum, a car forum or sports forum, the general lack of civility towards other people posting, especially newbies, seems to be on the decline at all of them.My personal pet peeve is when I see a new forum member ask a simple question such as "How do I get the fuel truck to come to fuel my plane in FSX?" and the poster recieves a terse reply to use the Search function before asking any questions. The reply using takes longer than simply helping out another member with an answer- "Press Shift+F".I could understand this reply if the person asking the question had a couple hundred posts under their belt and should know better, but many times they are a newbie who is trying to join the forum's community and seeks a little help. This newbie now wonders if he should ever post again and goes away, never to be heard of again. How would you have liked it in school if everytime you asked the teacher a question, they replied "Go to the library and look it up yourself."?There are many members here and other FS sites who, thankfully, have a deep wealth of knowledge that they use to help other members enjoy FS. I have recieved their help over the years, either by directly asking a question or indirectly, by reading someone elses post. Thanks to their efforts, FS continues to be my favorite hobby. So please, next time you read someone's post that has a question that you can answer, help out another simmer and give them the information they are seeking. You will make FS better for all of us.

If some of the long time Members would just remember back to a time when they were first starting out in FS and needed some questions answered, then maybe the threads would be a little less intimidating to newbies who are just starting out in our hobby. After all, we ALL are part of the FS COMMUNITY.Personally, this attitude that some exhibit towards their knowledge of Flight Simulation and the parts that go with it (Scenery Design, A/C modification, Repaints, etc.) smacks of 'elitism', and frankly makes me sick. :( Just my 2¢ worth.Alan
October 24, 201015 yr HelloCompared to some forums on the Web Avsim is a beacon of civility, to the point where it is almost self moderated. But like any community some here are more robust than others when it comes to debating something that we all enjoy. For new members with loads of questions (we were all there) the search function should be prominently highlighted when they sign up to the forum, It is not that great, I.E three letter searches such as BGL produce an error but when it does work there is a goldmine of information available. If I need any self moderation in how I post to other members I only need to think back to the morning I came in from nightshift to find Avsim website gone.I will probably never be lucky enough to meet face to face the people who I converse with here, but when the site went down I genuinely felt loss.So yes I am pretty much satisfied with where we are today regarding the hobby

Every time I read 95% of his/her responses this person expects a new user to have 10+ years of sim or real life flying experience under their belt before posting a question. It just makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on edge. I mean we all have our bad days once in awhile but arrogance and an I know it all attitude all the time just doesn't cut it. I wont say his user name but it goes something like Sn_v_. I swear his reponses to not only new people but also ones that have been around is so out of line most of the time that I am surpised that he hasn't been banned from all forums. If you really want a wild west experience try the FlyTampa forums. I dont think I have seen any FS forum where people rip and make fun of each other as much as they do there. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

I can pass on the Fly Tampa forums though. I just don't have the patience like I used to, and it's not worth getting more stressed out from aggravation that real life already throws at us. To get so hardcore and serious about something as simple as a hobby that you should enjoy would just take the fun out of it. Serious and hardcore becomes fact when I am sitting in front of a real yoke. other then that I do with the sim as I wish because I can :-P .. I'm, like most others just out here to have a good time and interact with other fellow simmers and IRL pilots. Regards, Dave Opper HiFi Support Manager
October 24, 201015 yr All,Just know that the person in question has been banned again at the other site you are referring to without posting the site.
October 24, 201015 yr All,Just know that the person in question has been banned again at the other site you are referring to without posting the site.Good thread. I know the guy _n_v_. The first time I saw a post by him my jaw dropped. If he's been banned from a forum without even posting you would think the penny would drop.Anyway, back to the 'asking dumb questions' aspect. If I have a problem of almost any kind, I'll Google it. Almost inevitably the answer will come from a forum somewhere. Every answer you/one gives finds it's way into Google so...there. :( /sits down and shuts up. The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. October 24, 201015 yr Regarding all the bleating about addon prices lately, I recently decided to give my beloved 2004 Holden Statesman (it's a car, you weirdo foreigners :( ) a bit of aftermarket loving. Let me tell you, FS is a cheap hobby compared to car modification. $3000 later and I've barely scratched the surface. :( Cheers, SLuggy with 16 pushrods and the truth I do not have a signature. Why are you reading this?
October 25, 201015 yr Moderator All,Just know that the person in question has been banned again at the other site you are referring to without posting the site.I was hoping you were refering to the Aerosoft forum, but he's still there. Surprising since I viewed some of his posts today which were really bad and mean spirited. Frankly, I can't believe Aerosoft hasn't booted him yet since I have seen people over there get booted saying things that were no where near as bad as that guys posts. October 26, 201015 yr Commercial Member Well i guess I had the wrong person in mind because it is still over there alive and kickin. Would be a good time to have an internet machine gun. Regards, Dave Opper HiFi Support Manager
October 26, 201015 yr The ban was not a total ban until my request as of today when he returned and immediately started his same stuff up again. No, it is not at Aerosoft. Dave, you have the right person in mind, I know you do.
