November 15, 201015 yr Hey All,I am hoping that you all can help with figuring out a good defrag program! I'm looking at O and O, but am taking suggestions on the best. Also, once we figure out the best one, if you all could share the best settings in regards to FSX, I'd MUCH appreciate it!K Image Coming... November 15, 201015 yr I'm using O&O defrag 12 and I'm very satisfied with it. I defrag my FSX partition on a regular basic with fast optimize and run a deep optimize on FSX and Win7 monthly. November 15, 201015 yr O&O Defrag or Ultimate Defrag. The former allows alphabetical ordering of files, which is a great performance booster for FSX. The latter additionally allows you to select the position of files and folders on the platter of your hard drive, which further boosts performance if done right. You can download trial versions of both programs and decide for yourself. "A life is like a garden. November 15, 201015 yr Can't go wrong with O&O Defrag 12. Run the Name mode a few times, then Space mode to pick up anything left out, and your disk will be in good shape. November 15, 201015 yr Author Thanks for the thoughts guys!I have the demo for O and O. Could you please elaborate on how to do the "Name mode" and then the "Space mode"? I only see the run defrag, or "Start > Complete Optimize".Thanks! Image Coming... KregE | B757/767 FO
November 15, 201015 yr Better look in O&O's help file for a full explanation of their defrag methods. The one you are looking for is Complete/Name. This will sort folders and files in alphabetical order. Doing this will speed up access to files that are in the same directory, which is what you want for FSX and Windows. The space method will put files into gaps that are the correct size. It's nowhere as thorough as the Complete methods, but it's a lot faster and useful to clean up after doing Complete/Name. November 15, 201015 yr I think the NickN post recommends O&O. I use Ultimate Defrag. Both do the same thing. Both will work fine. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
November 16, 201015 yr I use Defraggler, its free but way better than the built in defag. You can defrage single folders too. November 17, 201015 yr +1 Defraggler is great! Piriform also make CCleaner (System cleaning) and Speccy (System info), two other great free programs.+1 I couldn't live without CCleaner! It is a serious performance booster, and space saver. I run it 1-3 times a day. It also has a registry error fixer that is great, as well as a start-up program manager, and uninstaller that is better than the built in Add/Remove programs by far! TRY IT! It is free and a wonderful program! I honestly love it. I feel like a marketer or a weirdo, but it is a fantastic program like all piriform products! Just to clarify, the system cleaner, registry fixer, start up manager, and uninstaller are all built into the CCleaner program. I got a 10 fps increase just by running CCleaner and Defraggler before I start up FSX. Ethan Rayhorn My Office: (Taken at FL410)
November 17, 201015 yr Yes, CCleaner is a cool tool. But you should never ever use a registry cleaner, unless you have a registry related problem or really know what you are doing. Those cleaners tend to mess up your system over time, because they delete important entries. A better method would be to create a back ups and use them as a fall back, if necessary. November 17, 201015 yr I agree...but I have had no problems from this ever. CCleaner makes a backup before it does anything to the registry. I have them saved to a specific folder. Then after it fixes any errors, if I need to, I can double click on the backup, and it automatically restores all settings to the way they were. As of yet I have not had to use this. I was so surprised at the performance increase from an optimized registry! Ethan Rayhorn My Office: (Taken at FL410)
