Automated Tweaking and Tuning tool for FSX

Featured Replies

hey. I have been using bojotes tools online and generally I am satisfied with the fsx performance. The tool advices me too use and external fps limiter, and says this will greatly improve performance. set target frame rate to unlimited and set external fps limiter to 30. I did that but then I experienced some serious stuttering during playing. Did I do something wrong? Is there something I get do to get the stuttering away and get better performance using the fps limiter? I am using the fps limiter as suggested 0.2 somethingFsx standard versionspecs: amd 965 3,4 ghzmsi cyclone gtx 460 1gb4gb ram 1333mhzwin 7 64bit

Use Google Translate!http://translate.goo...en&tab=wT#de|en|Rolling%20Eyes.gifI translated grom German to English, thanks for the link, but I still don't understand what is being said. It doesn't look like its that complicated. Can someone just tell me in plain Eglish what to do?Thanks,Gnacino
Hi Gnacino, try this link:http://asia.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26943828Useful link to bookmarkIf link fails, details here:Alot of people have problems with there framerate in games and there has been a program released a while back, but with limited information about it, and with a ton of problems that people can seem to get around. I have been fooling around with this program for a while and have eliminated all of the possible bugs/problems that other people have had. In order for you to achieve 100% results, follow every instruction CAREFULLY.This topic is basically to clear up any questions and answers that everyone has about how this program works and how to get it functionally working.Question 1 - Why would you want to "limit" your framerate?Answer - Limiting the framerate for your games is basically to achieve the best "consistent" framerate for your games. This means that things like framerate spikes (large FPS drops or gains during games that can typically annoy the common person) will be either extremely reduced to the point where you wont even notice it, or completely eliminated. Both of these results are based on what kind of machine you are running, and what games you're playing.Question 2 - What does it mean to "limit" your framerate?Answer - Game performance has been the PC gamer topic every since games were invented. It is the pinnacle point between quality and performance of what type of balance you will get for your games. Essentially, the human eye is very effecient in spotting the differences between high and low framerates, for example, if your playing a game, and the FPS is in the high 60's (the best consistently smooth framerate for 60hz Monitors) and drops to the low 30's or even 20's, the human eye will immidiately detect that there isnt a smooth picture anymore.Question 3 - Does lower framerate mean less of a smooth moving picture?Answer - Yes it does. However, the human eye is very unique in a way where it can adapt to certain rates of images. For example, if there is a consistant 30fps (Frames Per Second) in front of you, your eye is more likely to be comfortable with that then if your framerate is increasing and decreasing every second for random periods of time. Console games today use 2 common framerate caps - 30fps and 60fps. These framerate caps are put in place for this very reason - to have consistent framerates through your gamig experience.Question 4 - What are the limits of what is considered consistent and what is not?Answer - The most common FPS locks are basically any number above 30, but with multiples of 5 or 10. So 35, 40, 45, 50 and even 55 are the numbers to hit for best results. Keep in mind, this concept of limiting your FPS is strictly LIMITING your framerate, as you cannot add framerates that you could not get in the first place. The steps listed below will guide you from start to finish on how to cap your framerates in your games.==========================================================================================Step 1 - Download the link below:http://rapidshare.com/files/160642187/FPS_Limiter_0.2.rarStep 2 - Extract the file anywhere you like, but make sure that the place where you put it, will be its PERMENANT location (this is to eliminate directory path problems in the future).Step 3 - Run the file in the folder that you just extracted, called "FPS_Limiter_GUI.jar", DO NOT run the "FPS_Limiter.exe" file, it will not work.Step 4 - When you have the program running in front of you, you will need to browse to the root location of the executable file of the game of your choosing. (NOTE: Games that already have an automatic 30fps cap cannot be increased any higher, so it is pointless to select these games)Step 5 - Once you have the game's DIRECT executable chosen, select from one of the 3 in the dropdown list at the menu at the top of the screen.D3D8 - DirectX 8 gamesD3D9 - DirectX 9 gamesOGL - OpenGL games (very few games run with the OpenGL language)Step 6 - Once you have selected either D3D8/D3D9/OGL, then select which framerate you want the game to lock at at the "maximum fps" box. For best results, if your lowest framerate is under 30, select a number that is 5-10 fps above for that specific game. If your framerate is above 30, select any number between 30 to 50. Experiment with it a little, you can always change your framerate lock.Step 7 - Once you've selected your Maximum FPS, click on "create bat" to make a .bat file in the FPS Limiter folder.Step 8 - When you're ready to play, double click on that .bat file. If you wish to make a shortcut, right click on the .bat file and select "Create Shortcut". You can change the name of the shortcut ONLY, do not change the name of the .bat file.NOTE: To change your Maximum FPS setting without repeating the whole process, right click on the .bat file created, and go to edit. Now find the line that says "/f:X" replace the "X" variable with whatever you like.FOR ATI USERS ONLY - ATI Tray Tools or any other 3rd Party Driver software cannot be run while using FPS Limiter. I am not sure how the program reacts with Nvidia 3rd Party Drivers, but it is recommended that you disable it before continuing. Here is a list of games that I personally own and have tested that work with the program:NOTE #1 - A [*] beside the game indicates that there is an alternate method to cap the games FPS, but the FPS Limiter program still works with it.NOTE #2 - Games that do not use a direct executable file to run, can not be used with FPS Limiter.

Dave, I believe the 580 can make a difference, yes. But, I don't one to make that 'official' ;)Check this out if you have access to the ORBX forums. VERY INTERESTING review by a regular forum member.http://orbxsystems.com/forums/index.php?topic=29927.0
I read that link and found it very interesting as I own a 580. However, I was more impressed by the sliders he was at, and the fact that my machine specs out slightly above his - but with less fps. He posted his config, I inserted bojote's tweaks - above 5 or 6 in all. I ran your config tuner last week and did not see any improvement. Im sure I was doing something wrong - well obviously I was because.....I could not believe the difference! I was flying around Houston (my hometown) with everything maxed and locked at 60fps. I don't run vsync anymore as the refresh is 60 and when locked at 60 there is no tearing. I have to say THANK YOU to bojote for all your hard work...and THANK YOU for posting this link. It made me make one last effort and I could not be happier. All Flying...no more tweaking..........at least for now :)Dan.

vSync Fix applied to your configuration! (Make sure you set your driver to Application controlled so the option is NOT forced but applied by FSX itself) it will work now.I have vSync set to "force on" in the nVidia panel as I use nHancer.Does the above suggestion mean I should now change this to "Use the 3D Application Setting?"

Correct, the tool now adds the 'correct' settings, so no need to 'force' it

*******, i've been wondering, what do you think about fps limiter? Having it set to unlimited helps alot in dense city areas, which it is suggested, but how about rural areas? I've noticed ground starting to get blurry when having unlimited, even in rural areas, which does not happen with, lets say fps locked to 30 internally. So, main question, should i use fps unlimited in dense city areas only, or everywhere?

You can counteract the 'blurriness' induced by frames unmilited doing some basic changes. They involve increasing TextureMaxLoad, Reducing SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT and increasing FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION.Alternatively, you can use Word Not Allowed's tweak (FFTF=0) and run frames LIMITED with great results but ONLY if you don't fly with all your slider to the right. Check his thread for more info.

Anybody flying the ES Citation X that has implemented Bojote's config file updates. I am told these "tweaks" will cuase problems with the ES Citation X.

Hi Brad, were you told 'what' problems specifically? what is the 'source' of this info? is it the ES Citation Developer? I have not received any comments, so I would love to hear where did you get this info from and try to address the problems (if there any of course)Thanks,

Thank you for jumping in to this. Yes, it is their support and development staff. Their position seems to be that any tweak is not supported and beleive if there is a software problem, it is related to cfg file changes. This all relates to the Citation X where the MFD was freezing. You can review these threads;http://www.eaglesoftdg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=3494&p=18473&hilit=mfd+freezing#p18473 They say they cannot support any cfg file changes and they learn here about Afinity Mask.http://www.eaglesoftdg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=3648 Your work has made my machine very responsive and I have contributed financially. Thanks,

Brad, I need to register on their forums to be able to access (I guess I need to be a registered product user?). Anyway, there are various facts I would like you to be aware of, specially when a developer tells you 'certain' tweak or tweaks are 'not' supported by them:1) Lockheed Martin does offer a 'commercial' license of the FSX product packaged with the name: Prepar3D. The 'engine' is basically the same used by FSX, but with modifications to better suit the commercial simulation market.2) Lockheed Martin's Prepar3D 'Learning Center' section in their product release 'recommends' the tweaks applied by the online tweak tool as a way to 'improve' the performance of the product and the overall simulation experience. They have even publicly acknowledge my contributions in this area on their own forums. 3) Lockheed Martin has direct 'access' to the FSX source code, so they are in better position than *ANYONE* to understand the negative effects that a particular tweak may have on their own product (Prepar3D / FSX).4) You can check the above 'facts' by yourself, by going here: http://www.prepar3d.com/forum-5/?mingleforumaction=viewtopic&t=106.05) I 'assume' (because I base my comments on facts I can not be 100% sure of this) that if what the ES Developers told you is true, then they will have problems supporting their product running Prepar3D, because the information they are providing you, conflicts with the information on the Prepar3D documents/manual.6) I'm not saying that what the ES developers told you is not true, what I'm saying, is that if they make a 'claim' they need to back it up with objective information, otherwise, this is just an 'excuse' to divert attention from a problem they might be having with their own product -OR- it you are the ONLY once experiencing this, it could also be a problem particular to your hardware. However, there is not enough information for me to make an objective, fact based claim! I don't even have a 'crash' report or error code from you (and I'll be glad to take a look at them)7) PMDG, Flight Sim Labs, Level-D Simulations, Captain Sim, VR-Simulations (F-18)... you are free to ask any of those companies if the tweaks 'affect' or improve the sim experience. You can ask Ryan, Lefteris, Darryl if *ANY* customer has ever 'complained' because of a tweak I provided made their sim 'crash' (BP=0 Excluded of course for reasons explained before, and due to the tool NOT removing the bufferpools)8) I find it, very, VERY bad taste that a reputable company like Eagle Soft replies to you with a 'blame on bojote tweaks' attitude for a problem you might be having without even bringing this to my attention first. I sincerely hope this is a misunderstanding on their part or yours. as a next step I suggest you provide me as much information as you can with the crash you are having. (I need error codes and the failing module .DLL name) to help you further.9) Even if the tweaks are harmless, a developer has the right to say that *they* don't support it, here, reasons won't matter, policy does and there is nothing you can do about it. However, I want to personally help you sort out the problem to determine what the 'source' is before moving forward. *IF* the problem happens to be with the actual product, then we contact ES directly and try to resolve it with them, no way we'll start blaming them publicly without brining it to their attention first. In 'most' cases, errors and/or crashes are always related to 'hardware', few times due to a bug in software, because this would affect EVERYONE and the developer WILL know and fix this, thats why I believe this *might* be hardware related.. what I still don't understand if what you claim about ES blaming it on the 'bojote tweaks' or a particular tweak or the AffinityMask one, that simply doesn't make sense! are you sure it was an ES developer that made this claims? or was this just a regular forum user?

They never said "bojote's tweaks are a problem. They only say "tweaks". They asked me what I have done concerning tweaks so I introduced them to your cfg file website. I suggested they try your cfg chnages and test their software so they can provide a more researched response.PM on the way.

My apologies then to ES, but you made it sound as if it was directly related to something I suggested... anyway, lets have a look at that config file of yours.
