August 2, 201114 yr not being from the states, what does he mean about general aviation being under attack?
August 2, 201114 yr Well I am not from the US either, however what it means is basically costs (mainly government sanctioned taxes) being pushed ever higher-be it on Avgas or Jet A1or landing/approach fees etc... making it harder to be able to afford to fly in GA. Also GA airports are constantly under threat of closure for one reason or another, less and less people being interested in aviation on a general level - due to the impossible costs that are now involved...it will have a knock-on effect in the next few years of not having enough qualified guys and girls to fly commercially - it is dangerous because GA teaches you the basic skills and builds up great experience of flying, something that the quick 18 month, £60 000 programs that pop 250 hr pilots who can afford it, into the right hand seat of commercial jets can never replicate, stick and rudder flying seems to be a dying skill in commercial aviation, which is both sad and can be dangerous. Sadly, things are about the same over here in the UK. Anthony Milner
August 2, 201114 yr Author The U.S government, especially democrats (not trying to get political at all, don't criticize!) want to do what countries in Europe, like Spain do, as well as many asian countries, and tax everything on general aviation. In the U.K they charge like 75-pounds for an ILS approach, 35-pounds for an IFR clearance and lots of other stuff. Now, legislators, mostly democrat but also many republicans, want to tax the hell out of us, and make it very difficult to do what we do. Inactive
August 2, 201114 yr You should think of it more as, "pay to use" rather tan tax. Where do you think they get the money to run all those small airfields anyways? The high costs are for airports small GA Aircraft shouldn't even get involved with. Plenty of people get a grass strip, a club, and weekend bbq's. If you need IFR time you should know by then that it is an expensive hobby.I believe people who run life flight volunteer flights get some kinda tax deduction for helping out too?I got my FAA PPL and moved to another country with landing fees. At first I thought it was weird. Thn I saw how weird it was to fly virtually 15 miles from one airport to another. Why do areas need more then one airfield so close to each other?

By the way, this is no "hobby" for me. Sad, but tell me one thing it is almost twice that expensive to fly or learn to fly GA here in europe.Much less airports, fees everywhere, fuel really expensive, strict rules and we r still flying. So if u really want to u will be flying. Jiri Sekerka
August 2, 201114 yr Author General Aviation is a pivotal part of the United States, and its an important part of our economy, more than any other country! The money that the FAA gets from the U.S Government is pocket change compared to what they waste now...I'm glad airlines are trying their best to keep the money they charged for teh taxes that have expired; maybe they'll actually make money..
