Vin, I saw a huge improvement in performance from both resizing my external repaint textures from 4096 to 1024 as well as resizing the VC textures. As far as the VC textures go I resized the following. PMDG_NGX_Main_Panel.dds to 2048 X 512PMDG_NGX_VC_03.dds to 1024 X 1024PMDG_NGX_VC_OVHD01.dds to 1024 X 1024PMDG_NGX_VC_Radios.dds to 1024 X 1024 I did all the External rextures to 1024 X 1024 including the fuselage, wings, tail, light maps, and speculars. Basically anything that was 2048 or 4096 was resized to 1024. I also went into the texture.common folder and did the same for the following textures and sized them all to 1024 X 1024. pmdg_737NGX_cabin.ddspmdg_737NGX_fuselage_1_bump.ddspmdg_737NGX_fuselage_2_bump.ddspmdg_737NGX_fuselage_3_bump.ddspmdg_737NGX_tail_bump.ddspmdg_747NGX_wings_bump.ddspmdg_NGX_misc.ddspmdg_NGX_misc_1.ddspmdg_737NGX_wings.ddspmdg_737NGX_fuselage_1_spec.dds All in all the biggest improvement was in texture loading when switching views and smoothness. As well as the fact that using the 4096 external textures gave me the skeleton plane when it loaded. For my rig those sized textures are just way to resource hungry and are frankly one of the reason I never buy McPhat textures since they are all 4096 and I dont want to spend the time resizing. In all honesty, I was surprised that PMDG didn't offer the liveries in both 4096 HD and standard 1024 size for those of use with older setups. Heck, to be honest, even if I was running a new i7 with 6GB of RAM or more, I would probably still use the 1024 textures to free up more resources. To be honest, the 1024's in both the VC and external are so well done that resizing to 1024 resulted in hardly any visible loss of quality on my rig. In fact I cant even really tell the difference except that it works a LOT better. If you need more info let me know. One other thing Vin. Would it be possible to turn off the wings in the VC view and by doing so could we save even more performance? Personally, I dont care if I can see the wings from the VC and if we had a way to toggle them on or off I would shut them off in a heart beat if it freed up more resources for my computer. I know that this was possible in the J41 and might not be a bad idea in the NGX. Sean Campbell
Thanks for the list and the info... Just spent the better part of a couple of hours resizing, though I kept the external textures at 2048x2048. The VC is still wonderful to look at, the outside is great too, though I see a drastic improvement in the feel of things in general. It is now just that little bit smoother I feel and the stutter I noticed (that seems (my only indication is the timestamp of the loading of files in process monitor) to stem from the textures of the aircraft all being loaded just prior to touchdown) has reduced and in some cases is no longer occurring. No doubt it would disappear altogether if I resized down to 1024x1024, but that little stutter just now doesn't seem to affect manual landing performance. A great aircraft that feels a little smoother with this texture modification. Thanks for your research and input, to all participating here! :) Andrew

When I first read the first post of this thread, I was going to launch into some 'Fokker' gags and 'how about using the default 737 blah blah..'However this has now turned into a really interesting thread and shows that when members of the FSX comunity all chip in some brilliant stuff can come out.I will never doubt that the Beta testers gave the NGX a really good 'thrashing' but the real test is when the public get their hands on it. If lower textures make this amazing simulation more accessable to the users with lowers spec PC's then Im all for it.I have an I7 920 and if dropping some res size makes mine slicker then also count me in.. Great thread.Thank you.

Maybe someone could make a "Good" set of lower resolution Textures, and GIVE them to PMDG to be "Officially distributed" ? I suspect they have more importnat issues to deeal with than creating the Modified textures themsleves, This would seem to be like something the PMDG Supports can give back to the PMDG community, while taking some of the development pressuree off PMDG. Captains.... We don't need anyone to give us anything to distribute. We're not going to give out instructions. Patience here is the name of the game...

I've completely remastered my Virtual Cockpit, stably running at 25FPS on my laptop.
Generally speaking I'm able to maintain around 20-25 FPS with the hi res textures depending on what's going on outside, keeping the cursor off the screen... and whether or not my system is in a bad mood that day. How does your laptop compare to my laptop?
Have you tried flying without the FPS counter on, thing is, although frames can dip in places, the overall perception is smooth. At that's how it looks on my system. Sometimes, and I'm one of them, people can be too fixated on the top left corner and not see the rest of the screen objectively.
Yeah, I try not to even look at the FPS... most of the time I don't even notice until it dips below 15 FPS anyway and I'm normally able to sustain FPS above that.

Patience? Here?

Hey guys, don't want to start a war here but I was not able to find any texture pack on avsim (I found only for FS9) to resize my clouds.Really want to resize them, cause I don't care that much about visuals anymore. Anyone know where can I find such pack?

I'm sorry, but am I the only one having a hard time understanding this? I mean...you don't want anyone to give you textures? And you're not going to give instructions to outline the methods described above? That's fine I guess? You don't want a distributed set of textures to help those with low fps? What exactly are we supposed to be patient for? Not trying to be argumentative or whatever seriously. I just don't really understand what's being said. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

Okay, but I though Vic was mentioning the freeze hot-fix. Thanks though for clearing that up.

I just started today, and well, lowering the bigger VCs gave me at least 5 fps (10-12 to 17-20) so far. Don't be so keen though as to resize the _text_ textures as well... That won't do any good (I still tried it just to see). tongue.png Just got the new video card today as well, that has helped a good bit too, but the VC still is my bottleneck here. I can have 50 fps in external, not so much less (at least some 20-30) in 2D, but earlier today without the resized textures I once again had like 8-12 fps on final approach in the VC. Wow this certainly needs to become better, but I'm just starting to fiddle around. I even found that like 17-18 fps are not THAT bad, it's just not totally smooth but interestingly enough still very flyable (I would not have believed TBH). Getting in the low teens or even single digit though is definately spoiling my IFR flying experience. sig.gif

Has anyone else seen good performance increases from resizing their textures?I get good frame rates 25-30, but im interested to see if it makes panning in the VC alot smoother..

An extra 7FPS, is well, worth IT.

Hi, my laptop is nearly identical to yours just that I'm running 5GB RAM, sorry for late reply.

Hi all, A substantial gain here, around 7-10 of smooth FPS. Sam Campbell deserves a lot of thanks from PMDG and all of us. Kind regards Eduardo.

Don't be arrogant. Alot of us are real world pilots. Youre thread was bound to provoque this kind of reaction. It's like buying a Ferrari and asking to replace the engine with a 100hp 4 banger because you feel the car is to powerfull..I guess what people are trying to say is, PMDG has put an inordinate amount of work to produce THE most advance add-on on the market for FSX, and here you are, asking them to spend more precious time to downgrade it to suit your computer. In other words, they are (i am) saying, buy something that is less demanding for your rig, but leave the 737 NGX alone.
you and others are missing his point .. he is saying that finger prints and other little stuff doesnt add to the simulation .. but might add to the reduction in fps ....

A PMDG response:

Captains, we're setting something up for you. Hang tight.
And a non-PMDG response
buy something that is less demanding for your rig, but leave the 737 NGX alone.
God, I love good customer service. I wonder how PMDG feels about board members discouraging the purchase of their new product.
