PMDG 737NGX Review

Recommended Posts

Guest firehawk44

Just wanted to say I think the review was right on and PMDG is fully deserving of the Gold Star Award. I would add that PMDG deserves a special award for keeping the price low and very competitive. Thanks for a great review! Best regards,Jim

I agree... The PMDG 737 NGX is amazing- no doubt.Bbut it also has it´s share of problems (Activation, CTD's, EGPS Map and a few aircraft system issues) not mentioned at all in the review. Don´t get me wrong..... The PMDG is definitly the most comprehensive and accurate 737 sim, but a review so fast after release and without any minusses let me sit back and feel that the reviewer and Avsim (by allready publishing the review) aren´t objective and are somewhat biased to say the least. I don´t understand why they couldn´t wait until after the release of SP1, which is in the works and will be released soon (after fixing the activation issue). Again I want to emphasize that I´m a happy PMDG 737 NGX customer, but I also own the iFly Boeing, which has been out for serveral month now, but not reviewed yet here at Avsim.com ! Wothan

HelloExactly my thoughts.I own both products and each one is not perfect by any means, fps issues aside the i-Fly is the more robust and stable at this time. The PMDG 737 is newly released and is experiencing some issues which I am sure the Dev team will fix soon. But no product with with this amount of issues should be getting a gold star so soon after release.I am a very happy NGX user, but there is some bias going on with this review and it does Avsim's review system no favours.

PMDG carries alot of clout in the virtual skies. I own PMDG 737-600 to 900, 747 and 1900C for FS9 and 747X for FSX. Because of their clout and their official Avsim forum, I believe their NGX review got in first. I've owned IFly 737 for FSX for about a month and I can say it's an amazing product and value. I've had no operating issues other than learning how to setup various panel options and learning how to use their failures features. Documentation also is top notch. John Taylor, California

This was apparently written after only 3 hours of flight test time? blink.pngDoh.gif Hardly seems like enough time to do 1 or 2 flights with it....not to mention an entire flight test regiment for a consumer review.

That review was so generic as all reviews are. They are worthless! No mention of the many, many users having problems with installation activation, CTD's, OOM's,panel freezes or high system demands. I believe Avsims reviews are so phony! Give a complete review and not just a sugar coated one. Now don't start complaining. I love my NGX but, as a consumer advocate, buyers need to know both sides! IMO that was put out to rebuff the previous unofficall review done by the German organization which was much more accurate. I have never seen an official review that soon after release!! One flight 3hrs. Not what is that going to prove? what a joke! Glad they don't do FAA flight worthiness testing :)
If you'd bother to read the translation provided in that thread in the PMDG forums, you would've seen that they were just as glowing about the NGX.

That is a statement I would want you to take back. Maybe you do not like the review talked about in this thread, but that is no reason to call all reviews "worthless"! I can find plenty of reviews that are not generic at all and contain a lot of detail.

This is a first look at this aircraft, as it IS a very complex aircraft. Many simmers are sitting on the fence trying to decide whether this is or isn't an aircraft to add to their hangar. If there is a budding writer out there who has spent a lot of time with the 737 NGX, that would like to submit a comprehensive review of this aircraft, please let me know. I'm always looking for new reviewers.

The iFly 737 NG IS also a very complex aircraft - actually it doesn´t lag much behind the PMDG. So why has that not got it´s share of interest from Avsim reviewers ? That would be a very good starting point for people to decide whether the iFly or the PMDG is the one that suit their needs. The question here is not if PMDG deserves accoldae for their achievement - cause they certainly does. The issue here is rather if Avsim has some bias towards one developer in disfavour of another ! A first look is also Ok, but come on - 3 hours of testing does not suffice for a first look on such a complex addon and certainly does not help people decide if they should buy it or not - or if other options exist if the PMDG is too complex for their needs. The comment:

What I Don't Like About The 737 NGX

  • Nothing to comment about.

points to the fact that the reviewer did not research current state of the product well enough. I actually find it sad, seen from PMDG's point of view, that they didn´t get the chance to release the SP1 for their product before being gauged in a review. As far as I know, this is common politics in this community Finn

The iFly for FSX was realed around 8th April 2011 and the FS9 version around 2nd September 2010.Both has been updated. But nice to know that a review is on the way for the iFly too :-) Finn

Robert, I believe this review is spot on, and I say that with no bias. You are absolutely right about the depth of detail in the aircraft, too. I noticed every flight I learn something new and I anticipate this trend to continue on for a good length of time. If you may consider me, I'd be willing to add my .02 either in a supplemental review or an entirely separate review.

Sincerely,

There's something fishy about this "review". The reviewer spent a grand total of 3 hours flight time in writing the glowing review for the PMDG 737, and yet none of your reviewers has been able to review its main competitor?? I don't buy the "it's in the works" brush-off. I've had the FSX version of the iFly 737X since May 27th, and have since put in a few hundred hours on it. (I got sick of PMDG's foot-dragging, and I'm happy I didn't wait for it to finally be released.) What have your people been doing? No, I think there's more than a bit of provincialism involved here, possibly because PMDG's forums are hosted by AVSIM and iFly's forums are independent. And a review with not one official negative comment makes me question the reviewer's objectivity, especially considering the complexity and growing pains associated with the PMDG. The fact that a hotfix has already been created, and the users are eagerly waiting for the first (of who knows how many) Service Pack tells me more than this pablum. The documentation is ridiculously expensive (though thankfully not needed), and the software itself doesn't even include all of the NGX models (the iFly has 7 different versions). I'm sure PMDG will expect to be paid for the rest of the family, whenever they are released. The latter fact alone made me postpone buying the PMDG, perhaps indefinitely. Someday maybe I'll buy it, or ask for it as a gift, but I'm in no hurry. It looks like a fine 737NG, but I already own one of those.

The problem I have with this review, is it doesn't accurately portray the current state of this release. It glances over the problem many of us are having with CTD's Freezes, and Out of memory issues, and implies they are fixed with the Hot fix. One look at the PMDG forum, would have shown the reviewer they are not fixed. Worse he dismisses them as "minor issues". I'm sorry, but I consider the inability to safely land the plane a major issue, and one this review should have made clear, if the purpose of it was to give advice to potential customers. Personally I feel any review of this product is a bit premature, and should have awaited at least until the official SP1 release to give PMDG a chance to address these issues, in order to give a fair account of the product.

Thanks

Tom
