I have got FS9 configured and flying great with REX and GE Pro currently. I have one further question. I have my settings maxed out with resolutions matching each monitor and FPS locked at 22, but I get blurryness about 100 miles around my aircraft position while at cruise. Is there anyway I can stop this from happening?

There's a tweak for this: Under 'Terrain' in your FS9.CFG file replace the entries there (not everything under 'Terrain' just the info below) with this: TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.000000 TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=9.000000 TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=1242456

I have always purchased the various MS Flight simulators as soon as they were released in England, FS '98/2000/2002/2004, and FSX.... But I must admit that FS2004 has become welded to my Hard Drive because of such fantastic programs as; FS Navigator, LAGO FSSE/FSE designers, and various scenery FS 2004 Payware, Freeware, etc, etc, programs... FS Navigator keeps me in touch with my friends on On-line and Solo Radio-navigation Multiplayer, and my lovely LAGO scenery objects populate all my favourite Airfields, and together with VOZ, GE Pro, REX, etc, my scenery (almost?) matches FSX....and the program runs smoothly on my "average" hardware! My FS 2004 has become a good friend since it was first released, (following FS 2002)....wub.png My FSX doesn't stir up the same sort of magic in my loins!...Rolling%20Eyes.gif ...! Just did this and works like a charm. It creates a weird effect when really zoomed out in top down view but that is very overlook-able when it fixes the distortion at high altitude. Tom

The thing that bothers me about FS9 is the scenery resolution. the highest resolution still looks pretty bad.

Ialso did it. Now I have rendered textures till horizon and the rendered textures don´t pop into sight just under me. Thanks for that.

I have FS '98, FS 2000, FS 2002, FS 2004, and FSX, on my Hard Drives, all purchased when first released in England. I fly FS2004 all of the time!...wink.png ...! ...why?... Mainly because of; "FS Navigator", together with the majority of other on-line Multiplayer Pilots! Without it, I would have given up Flight Simming many years ago!....Whistle.gif ...! (It was never released for FSX). Paul....cool.png ...! P.S...regarding the desirable add-ons for FS 2004, don.t forget VOZ 1,8, for its wonderful Koorbygen buildings and colourful scenery!

Interesting. You list your system but don't include the display size and resolution. I find FS9 is excellent on a 24" 16:10 display running 1920*1200. I appreciate this is different to the scenery texture size but I'm curious how you view the scenery.

Yet, you are in fs9's forum. Are you trying to convert us or something?!

Dillon,I read an article that states that any value higher than 4 does nothing in terms of enhancing fs9.Furthermore,terrain extended levels, can be either 1 or 4,and nothing else according to the article. Can you confirm? Dimi.

I'm a little pressed for time these days. What I posted above was something we researched years back. It worked for me so I was satisfied. If you want to play around with numbers be my guest as far as everyone else, enjoy... happy.png

I have both Sims with a fair amount of addons each. Having two sims is like having two rather large dogs. They take a lot of feeding and maintenance and both need regular walks (and visits to the vet). Clearly if you've just bought a top of the range 2500-K i5 o/c'd to 4.8GHz on Win 7 you're probably best not getting involved with FS9 now. FS9 has a great community and is far from dead though because we cant afford top of the range PCs again. FSX looks better only when it also has all the add ons that FS9 has. Default FSX IMHO does little or nothing for me. But sometimes its not what it looks like but it's the overall experience, and its horses for courses. The Earth is a big place and is there is patchy cover in both SIms esp outside US.Europe Oz. It is the addons (and your PC set up) not the sim itself, that often makes the difference to how they look and feel. My FS9 rig is as follows GE Pro II - GREAT - It even makes default water bodies coasts look much better and it works worldwide - GEX in FSX does not seem to do this, I have Europe and USAREX (no need for Zinnertek) - essential to bring FS9 up to 2011 standard; its matching sea and sky colouring vastly reduces the environmental differences between the two simsENB - tried it but does erode frames sometimes - prefer withoutASE - Essential. never use Rex'S WEATHERUT USA/Can/Europe - essential if you fly these areas (is there anyone who doesn't?)VOZ in Oz, Red Baron in NZ, Aeroworx in SA, TNCM add on etc etc etc, some Caribbean & Latin America addonsFly a lot in Canada and BC - use BC addons , Glacier Bay etc - still better than UTX Canada IMO - don't have Misty Fjords X or Orbx though - admittedly they are v. good but u need a fast PCAirsimmer A320 (v good when it feels like it), PMDG 737 (still superb), Wilco E170/190, good, Aeroworx B200 - still brilliant esp. in the Antarctic, S America, AFG King Air B350 - good, Wilco Airbus (OK but looks are fs2002 standard really)IFR experience is first class in FS9 - VFR is good sometimes and not others.... and FS Navigator - the old and irreplaceable flight planner - now long gone of course. Not available for FSX so I use FSC 8 which is good but different and not as easy. FSX setup Acceleration (no excuse you get it for £17 now.)GEX USA Can/AK EUFEX (not REX) - that's Flight Environment to you for Sea and Sky. I think its just as good and a bit more subtle looking.UTX - all (no Orbx though - recommended if you have a fast PCAlaska X, Iceland X, Orbx Demo of Tasmania, Aeroworx South Africa, and Red Baron NZ, Queenstown etc... I do not think my IFR experience in FSX is always that great. Flight models are better in FSX but heavily dependent on addon programming, not just the sim itself except for default planes. My PC is not fast enough to run the NGX smoothly or other big addons in large towns large airports bad weather,,,,. VFR is superb. I use C185 in Alaska X (Unalakleet X!), and other irreplaceable FSX addons - Carenado Caravan (HD is superb), Jetstream 41, Aerosoft Twin Otter (the only Otter really), Embraer 170/190, Wilco Airbus (FS2002 really), A2A P51D - amazing. There is little comparison with FS9 in this respect, FSX wins hands down. However MIsty Fjords and Glacier Bay in FS9 can look superb and more than match FSX - but that's Holger Sandmann for you! he went on to help with FTX PNW etc FSX default planes are mostly a great improvement on FS9FSX has a round Earth and much better geospatial mapping, better graphics and 6DOF flight modeling. Textures are sharper and environment is more realistic looking etc... You can definitely make FS9 look better than FSX sometimes with the right addons - but I find a complete experience is only possible using both. PC spec - which I really bought for FS9 three years ago E6850 3GHz4Gb Crucual Ballistix 800 RAMnVidia GTS250 1Gb o/c graphics2 x 500Mb 7200 disksNickN's tweaks for both Sims (essential) Anything less and you will struggle with FSX Hope this helps Ray

Ray, I seldom say that but I can't resist this time: Thank you for your brilliant post! It might be the best FS9vsFSX post I have read for a long time. I agree with almost everything you wrote and I wish more FSX users (and some FS9ers too) shared your approach. Then we would have a one-peaceble-community instead of the one which tends to be split (a bit like the VATSIM/IVAO story). All those 'Mine is better than yours', 'Yours looks like crap' or 'TIme to move on, boys' make me sick. I am planning to buy a top notch PC later this year and I guess I will give FSX another (4th) chance. In FS9 I mostly miss some great sceneries (the FSX-only ones), higher tex resolution and Earth's curvature. But I love FS9 so much and I have it tweaked and addon-filled so much that I am sure I will stay with it too for a long time to come. You might be a newbie in this forum, but I would automatically award you with a 10,000 post status. wink.png All the best, Ray!Write more often.
