Slippery Approaches

Gents-My two personal favorites are both in my least favorite city:Expressway Visual to 31 at KLGA. Click here for the approach plateThis one isn't "difficult" to fly, per se, but it is a challenge to fly WELL. For some reason I always seemed to get this approach when the ceiling was right at the limits, and there was a low pressure system over mid-state PA so the winds were pushing strongly from the south.... The end result was that you really had to be on your game rolling out on final.
I flew this approach in real life (as a passenger) a few weeks ago on an Air Canada E175 from Toronto. It was a cloudless night, so the approach was incredible to watch (I was in a window, on the left side). I've experienced this approach several times over the years, but this last one was a bit different. We flew south (west of LGA, as I could see it from the window), but over the East River, instead of the Hudson. We then crossed over Manhattan almost directly over the Empire State Bldg, over the Hudson, and then past the Verrizano Bridge, finally turning back somewhere deep over Staten Island. Every other time on this approach we had flown down the Hudson the entire time. IIRC, the pilot dropped the gear and had pretty much full flaps while still over Brooklyn (roughly Prospect Park/Twin stacks, if you're looking at the charts).

I'm building a new CPU this weekend so I can't wait to try these dense approaches.

I never liked any approach where base was downwind, especially circling approaches at nigh where base is downwind. Just no future in them. <G>Bill

Flew the river approach to DCA tonight from Halifax in a WestJet 736... At 9 fps :(It's pretty sweet. Fun avoiding the restricted airspace and the sharp turn on short final.

I always challenge myself by hand flying any obscure DME ARC/VOR/Localizer approaches. Personally any successful hand flown non-precision approach in FSX is rewarding. My two favorite parts of the approach: double tapping the A/P disconnect on my yoke to take over and the transition from instruments to visual in low minimums. Very rewarding.

Not the greatest scenary in FSX default but we held an event at this little airport VQPR in our VA recently. terrain makes the approach intresting and will test your mettle.Visual approach chart------> http://www.dca.gov.b...VQPR_6-1_en.pdf

Just another airport to add to the ones above in the interesting thread:KMFR Medford, OR LOC/DME BC-BThis airport near the southern end of the Cascade mountains, so some high and interesting terrain around. What makes it fun is that is has1. A DME arc (if using the IAF at either JEXAM or WISEP), 2. The arc is measured from the OED VOR/DME, but you will need to make a switch to the LOC at the lead radial as this is the final approach navaid,3. This is a Back Course approach, and4. The published missed requires a climb in a holding pattern. The NGX may make relatively easy work of this, but if anyone has experience on approaches using steam gauges, this one requires some serious multi-tasking (especially without an HSI to be able to correct for the reverse sensing on the LOC BC).Thanks, Bruce.

San Diego RWY 27 is a simple approach but a bit difficult just before touchdown. Default Scenery does not portray the airport very well, however.
But we'll shortly have a good improvement of default scenery made by a good friend of mine Sagga Toure.

Oh really? Will it be released to the public?

There used to be a departure procedure out of KJFK that had you making a right turn IMMEDIATELY after departing from 31R. The turn was defined as "turn before crossing" some radial off LGA (Which is very nearby, so you had to act almost as fast as you left the ground) and it had both an altitude, a DME and a speed constrained that needed to be managed all at once or you would bump into KLGA's approaches...I used to LOVE that departure for its complexity- because if you had mastered your airplane you could nail the numbers perfectly.I looked for it but it appears that it has been removed from the collection.... I'll see if I have it in my old jepp binders at home and create a scan for you guys to see.
Hi Robert, I believe you are referring to the Canarsie climb out of 31. I might have it stashed here somewhere and I´ll look it up. Flew it once from the jumpseat of a triple seven. Pretty entertaining climbout to say the least. Eagle (KEGE) has one of those climbouts with low, steep turns as well.

Cheers,

"There used to be a departure procedure out of KJFK that had you making a right turn IMMEDIATELY after departing from 31R""Hi Robert, I believe you are referring to the Canarsie climb out of 31"from http://atc-jfk.net/?postid=4"CANARSIE is again a VOR - CRI and is the name for the climbout procedure on the Kennedy1 Departure. This climbout is used for the bulk of turbojet departures off Rwy 31L. You'll usually hear "clear to XXXX, Kennedy1 Departure, Canarsie Climb, vectors XXXX then as filed."

Isn't the Canarsie climb off of the 31's a left-hand turn?

PADU! Dutch Harbor, or Unalaska. Was served by Alaska airlines, they flew 732s there twice a day, weather permitting.Offset non-precision approach, into a sheltered bay with 3000' cliffs, you can't see the runway until the last minute, all 3900' of it, with water at both ends, winds blustery and almost always crosswinds. I love it!As an added bonus the weather is often close to minimums, and a crosswind is typical.padu_sm.jpg* Orest

I always wonder why this one gets excluded while the visual to 13L/R into JFK always makes the list. I've flown the expressway visual into LGA numerous times, and it can be very tricky, espicially with gusting winds. There's no vertical guidance until you're rolling out around 300 ft above field elevation, and it's a tight turn from a downwind. It's got some great scenery too! Nothing like buzzing Citi Field!
These two LGA Expressway 31 and JFK 13L are my favorite. I do them several times a week in my 767 and 737 sim. I also did them both in the LevelD 737-800 full motion simulator. I was quite prepared for both, but I did the JFK 13L better, that the LGA 31. The lead in lights makes it easier at JFK. You can add them to your FSX scenery.I actually did the LGA 31 approach twice on the full motion sim, the 1st time I was a bit high and under turned. It took last second corrections to land it the 737. The second time, I cheated a little by staying a bit south of the LIE - giving me 1/4 mile more to make that 135 degree decending turn. I absolutely stuck the one and exited before RW 4/22. My instructor was impressed, but he said ATC would be mad with me being just a tad off DIAL 083 radial.
