FS9 not running well enough to use

Featured Replies

Hello AllI don't understand why ,but FS9 has now become unusable. It starts OK ,but as soon as an aircraft is selected and I am at an airport (either simple or detailed) first of all the sound is distorting and not smooth as it normally is, the pan rate is incredibly slow ,and the frame rate down to single figures.I have tried different drivers for my card (nvidea Gforce6600gt) ie latest ,roll back etc etc that makes no difference.Have checked for hardware issues in device manager no problems noted. I have unin and rein Joystick ,mouse etc have tried updating drivers ,but device manager always comes back as having the most up to date version, so no joy there either.Hving said in another post the other day that i have rarely had to unin and rein FS9 to solve problems, I did in in desperation even give that a try ,but fs9 didn't want to unin, having selected that option the uninstaller just sat there appearing to do nothing (maybe i was to impatient ) I doubt it would solve this problem anyway.I have recently had a lot of problems with system interrupts making my general PC use very difficult ,but I COULD run FS9 ok for some reason. Now i find that the situation seems to have reversed .I.E. PC for normal use is fine, but fire up fs9 and keep ane eye on MS Process Explorer and as soon as aircraft is waiting at airport up goes the horrible red graph and with it the 'interrupt percentage'I am at a total loss as to what is wrong. If my PC had come with a copy of XP (Just pre -installed on the machine ) i would perhaps try a rein of that. This is all really annoying ,and I feel that (like i mentioned before that I could be coming to the end of my simming hobby) sitting in front of a PC for hour after hour trying to fix PC and sim problems is most definitely NOT healthy.Anyways enough woe if anybody has ANY Ideas I would appreciate it.If an unin could be a real solution then I am prepared to try that.Even MORE fed up than I was yesterday.cheers Andy

I read your other earlier posts about your PC problems. Sounds like you're having systems-wide problems and not just with something specifically in FS9.Are any other applications, 3D games or simulators (if you have any installed), etc... working fine?

Hi MomtchilThe only other game I have is Chess ,that is running ok .I have just tried something....I have a copy of FS9 backed up on an external drive (its probably a few months out of date) I clicked on the FS9 exe in that backed up copy and FS9 started as normal, Now I don't know what version is running ,would it be the backed up version or my 'normal FS9 ' because whatever version is running its performing as it should ie decent frames ,smooth panning etc its even running in the background as i type this and its fine.I think my troubles may be sound related. The sim is running in the background with no sound and is smooth and fine, I have just plugged my old sound blaster external card in and immediatly the sound is distorted and frame rates drop, I am sure i have the latest (last ) drivers for this card. I do have C-MEDIA on=board as well ,but that isn't right to.Anyway do you think the FS9 that is running at the moment is my normal version or the backed up version on my external hard drive .Cheers and apologies for PUNC ,GRAMMER etc just want to get the info out.

Hi Andy, I am no expert, so I can't do much, but hope you get this sorted. The flightsim world is a sadder place with you being there.Tristan

Probably a bit of both.FS will be using all files in it's local folder. However, files located outside of the main FS9 folder will be used by both installs. As an example, you should have access to all your saved flights from both sim setups, yet they will use the local scenery.cfg.If you are using FS9.exe in both folders, as opposed to FS9.exe in one and FS9_bak.exe in the other, then both setups will use the same FS9.cfg.If the sim runs fine without the addon sound card, I suspect the card has gone bad.Hope you get it sorted out.regards,Joe

Hey Andy, this is probably academic but have you checked for a virus or possibly spyware? I'm sure you have...Also, what type of processor are you running...does it have hyper threading enabled? If so, I understand that FS9 has issues with it and likes it disabled...Mark

Thanks Joe.Unfortunately I have had issues with both my old soundblaster card and my internal C-MEDIA AC97 card(chip?) as well (in fact I have been trying to find out if the driver on C-MEDIA is the latest ,but as is the case so many times its a user unfriendly business ,and I still am not sure ,even going to the C-MEDIA sight has yielded zilch joy.)I am sure my problem is a sound related though ,even though Device manager shows no issues with either soundcard. This what happens when I run FS9...... Aircraft will be standing ready to go. If the engines are running the sound coming from my speakers is a distorted poppy crackly one (the best I can describe it ) panning in spot particularly is jumpy ,laggy and slow , frame rates at this time are in single figures, after five to ten minutes (seems longer) this situation seems to resolve itself I.E. frame rates and sound return to normal ,panning resumes as it normally is ...smooth.So this is a mystery indeed.

Hello MarkAs you say I have done all the virus checking ,spyware hunting ,system enhancing etc etc etcI don't think the Hthreading thing applies in my case as the PC is a single core good old p4 2.8But thanks for your thoughts all ideas gratefully received in these circumstances.Andy

Hi AndyTry going into your bios and resetting the IRQ settings, you can normally set them to auto, also if your bios has the option that supports Windows OS, I can't remember the actual option but if it's there then enable it cus windows then finds extra hardware etc.I think you may have an IRQ conflict, sorry to be so vague but I can't remember the exact terminology in the Bios options. You could also tell the BIOS to load either the default settings or the optimised settings and see if that helps.CheersMartin

Have you tried downloading & running Process Monitor?http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645Quote:Process Monitor is an advanced monitoring tool for Windows that shows real-time file system, Registry and process/thread activity. It combines the features of two legacy Sysinternals utilities,Filemon and Regmon, and adds an extensive list of enhancements including rich and non-destructive filtering, comprehensive event properties such session IDs and user names, reliable process information, full thread stacks with integrated symbol support for each operation, simultaneous logging to a file, and much more. Its uniquely powerful features will make Process Monitor a core utility in your system troubleshooting and malware hunting toolkit.

Hello Guys Just want to say thanks to all who have tried to help with this real pain of a problem I am having with 'system interrupts ' .I can use FS9 ,and its fine ,but this is then palaver i have to go through. I start FS9 and for about five to ten minutes it is unusable ie sounds stutter and crackle ,panning is slow and choppy ,frame rates are down to single figures (even at a simple airport) after this period of time has passed ,suddenly frames revert to normal ,as does panning ,and sound is no longer stuttering and crackling.I have made a series of longish (4rs plus) flights just to make sure all the messing around (I inadvertently uninstalled (don't ask) parts of my FS9 installation ,fortunately I have a back up ,and gradually restored all the removed files from the Scenery Folder ) .The good news is that my FS9 setup seems to be OK (I fully expected a CTD nightmare)To sum up I still have this bloody annoying system interrupts problem (have tried everything my limited knowledge allows IE latest driver checking, disabling various hardware in Device Manager etc etc etc etc but nothing seems to work.)Anyway I have managed to work round this issue to some extent ,just wish i new what was causing it. From reading up on the subject it does seem as though 'interrupt grief ' is caused by hardware, coupled with driver issues but I can't for the life of me seem to locate what in my PC could the offending item.Anyways enough of all this for the moment ,and thanks to all for your suggestions ,I will look into them.We still seem to be a long way from just turning on a PC and having it simply work, just do its stuff (Like TV /radio ) without having to be a Grandmaster geek with limitless patience and non neurotic temperament. Which I most certainly ain't. :( So for the moment Air Horatio is still flying, JUST!

Andy.I'm not sure that will please Tristan though! LOL.gif ( I trust he meant "without" )Did you try The Elder Geek for assistance with the interrupts?Have a look at http://www.theeldergeek.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=26408&hl=interrupts&st=0Colin B

Andy,This might be a shot in the dark, but give this a try:Start Menu/Run/ dxdiagThis is the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. You will see tabs at the top of the window (System, DirectX, Sound 1, etc.)Click on the Sound 1 Tab and check the Acceleration. If it's on the Higher Settings, turn it down a touch to "Normal", then close the window.Fire up FS9, and see if that solves the issue.last year I had this issue, and it was driving me crazy! I'd get BSOD's, and the computer would reboot every time I tried to fly in FS9. I turned theSound Acceleration down, and it solved the problem. This might work for you, especially if you think you're having Driver issues, or you're getting CTD's and choppy sound.Good Luck!Alan :(

You said you are running Process Explorer. When the CPU goes red during your Win startup, browsing the CPU use column, what seems to be using the most capacity? In Proc Explorer right click on the columns header to add some I/O graphs including a general I/O and disk I/O. Now if you hover the mouse over those graphs it will show you the process using the I/O at that point. For columns add I/O Read, I/O write, Disk Read Bytes, Disk Write Bytes, Virtual Size. Bottom Status Bar should have CPU Use, Commit Charge, Processes (count), Physical usage. Add Page Faults (Virtual Ram Disk Swaps). On processes listed as run.dll hovering over those will show the dll called to run as an exe. Hovering over an exe in the list in some cases lists the services running under them.As far as the first ten minutes or more some anti-virus and firewall applications do their updating and scanning. I had AVG Free that for fifteen to twenty minutes sucked up all disk read/write accesses slowing everything down. Some AV apps also use heuristic scanning and look at apps seeking access to Program Files applications and can block or slow them down. Make sure that FS and all add-on apps are bypassed in these applications both AV and Firewall. If you added MS Security Essentials that may be causing a problem. I just use third party applications. Many have a gaming mode that lowers priority and resource use.I use Zone alarm Pro and just went to NAV from VG. Startup high rate disk accesses stops now in just a few minutes. The current version I last saw of Process Explorer at sysinternals.com is 15. I have 14 installed.Regarding CPU use, FS9 will grab as much CPU and ram resources it can on startup. It is normal for the CPU graph to go red after FS starts and you load a flight. For trouble shooting FS set its default flight with a default aircraft at a default airport for now clear weather theme. That flight always gets loaded in part in the background even when in the menus to initialize the FS engines. This will alert you to any scenery difficulty.See how FS runs with AI at zero. Just try FS without any add-on apps like weather running for now. Finally be sure your CPU heat sink and power supply and case fans are clear of dust and running. The processor will slow up in some motherboards if CPU heat rises too much.
