Thinking about ORBX Pacific Fjords...

Featured Replies

Hi,I have PNW, and I love it, and when reading throught the PAKT product description, I realized it sits in the area covered by Pacific Fjords.Hows performance, same as PNW? I can just barely fly through Seattle at 80 knots, any faster and autogen can't keep up...Also, Should I think about Tongass Fjords X?, I've heard some good things, but haven't actually looked at it...Thanks,

In my experience, Pacific Fjords performs much better than Pacific Northwest. Pacific Fjords has become one of my favorite scenery areas. They seem to have done every airport in the region all the way east to places like Kamloops and 100 Mile. The Ketchikan, Terrace and Prince Rupert in PF are wonderful. PF is designed to play nice with TongassX. With both of them installed, you have a contiguous scenery deliciousness from Sitka to Vancouver. And today, they are both on sale.

There is no comparison between the frames over PNW and PFJ. The latter doesn't have the extensive autogen spreads that are in PNW around Seattle and Portland. So frames in PFJ won't be an issue for you even at higher display settings.

PFJ is a lot faster even with denser autogen settings. It seems that trees don't slow the frames nearly as much as buildings.Get their Rocky Mountains package while you're at it and the sale's still on, mountain flying in the valleys between the custom strips is really fun.

There has been very few comments and reviews of the Rocky Mountains(Northern and Central). I wonder why. There might be quite few airports and far between? Are they as good as PNW and PFJ? How are the airports? Is there places to fly for slow-and-low pilots like me?... oh yes, I forgot. If you can run PNW in Portland and Seattle, there will be no problems what so ever with PFJ. That with Tongass makes a great åair. And of course we are waiting for new add on to Alaska from ORBX next year.

OK, so thats good about the performance, will buy it when I'm back to my main FSX computer, can't take advantage of that sale though :(. It might just be me, but I can't find Tongass X in the Flight Sim Store, where would I buy it?Thanks,

Jackson, iirc Tongass X is published by FSAddons. You can google for it and buy it on their website.

PFJ is great....one of my favourite areas.

I have been flying NRM for about three weeks. I really love it. I continue to be delighted when I arrive at new destinations like Kelowna, Oliver, Hope, Nakusp, Banff, Revelstoke etc., and find completely developed airports. I fly low and slow too, mostly in the C185F. You do need a plane with enough engine to get over the mountains which often means a climb to at least 11,000 feet.

I have bought it.On an AMD5600+ with 2 gb ram and a GF 430 1GB it performs pretty good.No worries I would say.

What can i say about ORBX.Possibly the best thing to come to Flight Sim ever!!Just upgraded my system to Sandy Bridge and just purchased PNW and NRM ( 33% off sale!).From default FS to ORBX is like night and day!The first thing i noticed ( i took off from CYXX ) , is the mountains FINALLY looked like REAL mountains . Before , the Cascade mountains (even with enhanced mesh installed ) looked like "grassy molehills" - sort of like you see in the north of Scotland etc. Desert textures ontop of mountains. After installing PNW , i was completly floored by the mountain details. Combine this with REX Overdrive and ENB series , the difference is nothing short than amazing. FINALLY a landclass for Canada that is accurate!Plus i have not even optimized my system yet ( still installing add-ons) , Running at GTX 460 1GB i have no issue at all so far ( with 8XS AA - no higher hardly any shimmers!) .I5 2500k running at stock speeds, and a majorly fragmented drive , it seems to be running not bad so far ( good FPS , just a few stutters here and there , probably due to REX water textures - but need to tweak !)ONce i finish optimizing Windows 7 ( nick N steps), defragging the drives , Bojote tweaks , overclock to 4.5 GHZ this is going to be even better! Now off to installing NRM!

I think I am going to get PFJ and PAKT. PNW is terrible on FPS but I am hoping that the experience will be different with PFJ. I thought that I wouldn't buy anymore ORBX stuff. I have all four for Australia but I never fly there. I have PNW turned off because of performance. Still, I like this one because they actually released an airport with commercial traffic. It will compliment Aerosoft PANC quite well.I really wish ORBX would do a couple things.1. Release more airports with commercial traffic. They don't have to be large hubs but I won't buy airports that airlines don't service.2. I know they offer .kmz's with their coverage areas but why can't they just make a jpg with a map on their product pages? While I use GE on a regular basis, it is kind of a pain to download and open the .kmz's in GE just to see the area that is covered. Developers should make it easier for people to purchase their products and I think this is a pretty simple request.3. Offer a PNW light version that excludes the FPS killing elements. I already own it and I would love to enable it but even at FL300, it is a FPS hog. The idea should be to improve the FSX Seattle, not make it worse.

Orbx PAKT Ketchikan has some problems. I bought it, but I have disabled it and I'm waiting for a patch. My issues are:(1) There is a crash object in the runway so I have to turn off crash detection to use the scenery.(2) The float bases on the city side of the harbor, like Murphy's Pullout are not modeled and I use these in my VA. These are in Orbx Pacific Fjords.(3) Despite claims to the contrary, frame rates aren't very good. The Pacific Fjords version of PAKT is much smoother. The good news about Orbx PAKT is that they have finally modeled the sloping taxiways and other weird elevations that the RW PAKT has. It has the potential to be a great add-on, but I won't use it until these issues are addressed.
