My take on MS Flight... and the future of simming

Featured Replies

Of course, there are the Father Bills and the Justin Times and even the Francois Dumases who have an honest desire to further the hobby despite the low returns. Kudos folks! We, the people, appreciate this too - and even more so the "Piglets" of our hobby world.
Justin Tyme, wow not heard about him for years. I remember I think it was FS5.1 days, he arrived in flightsimming news group asking hundreds of questions on mesh editing. A year or two later as we all know he was producing high quality scenery. On another note:Assassins Creed! I play "Perfect World" from the malaysian servers, shhhhh! I bet many of us have these interesting little side attractions ;)

Guilty pleasures :)I'll admit that even a hard core simmer like myself couldn't resist beating up old ladies with a bat in Grand Theft Auto... Oh wait. That is kinda like a real world sim isn't it... ;) Guess it isn't long before we have a Greek riot simulator!Assasin's Creed looks great. Thought about it, but just can't find the time I'm afraid. Also, playing these modern games make FSX look so bad, so I try to stay away from knowing what could have been...

All that is delaying my painting "work" for the flying simulation community - my order book (sic) is full and if I don't get those paints done, I'll miss out on more "Ego-food" despite the injured wrist that has kept me away for the best part of two years...
Oh my Chris! Are you suffering from advanced CTS also? Both my wrists are injured. The left has a small cracked bone that's often very painful, and my right has developed advanced carpal tunnel syndrome. I wear rigid braces at night and when not working, and soft braces during work hours. They sure make typing difficult! :(

Have you considered a few Text to speed alturnatives to the typical mouse and keyboard? The software has really really come a long way these days. I really hate the Dragon commercials, lol, but the Dragon speech recognition software is really amazing.Might be a useful setup for a person who is having difficulty with the standard mouse+keyboard.....

Worse than CTS - I slipped on ice two winters ago and crushed all the cartilege between the bones of the right wrist. I have literally bone on bone contact in the wrist now. Docs say that the only solution is to fuse the joints - which is no solution at all for me, so although I can still type reasonably well, my fine mousework suffers. But that would be worse with fusion so I restrict myself to painting only for worthwhile causes...But don't read anything into that "worthwhile" - it could be a case of "Wow! I like that!" or (as in the current case) CareFlite in TX asking me to do their A109... which I am - despite some godawfully tricky mapping issues ;)

For forum messaging that requires text, that would indeed be useful. However for 3d modeling it would be totally useless! For 3d modeling I've switched from using a mouse to a very expensive, hi-resolution pen tablet.Likewise, for either C++GDI+ program code, or XML scripting, text-to-speech would be an exercise in futility.

Yikes! That does sound painful. I'm not too sure about being "worse" than ACPS though, as the pain isn't localized to only the wrist. As it becomes more aggravated, the pain starts ascending the arm until it reaches the shoulder. At that point between the ACPS and my poor old arthritic bones... :unknw:The doctors at the VA Hospital's surgery department assure me that they can "fix" my damaged nerve sheaths, but I'm not terribly convinced that such is truly possible.Chris, have you ever tried using a pen-graphics tablet for painting? I've used mine in Photoshop and it's really amazing how much easier it is to "draw with a pen" vice "drawing with a mouse."

"handwriting" is even worse than typing because that requires wrist movement. I do have an A4 Wacom tablet, but as you might guess - it is not getting much use.I am thinking about a visual tablet now. One that has a "touch/stylus sensitive" screen - but at around 1000 Euros, I fear that is too much for stuff I do for free. I am not "that important" to the world that I need to immortalise myself with my amateur artwork ;)

Microsoft has shown they know what the public wants by providing the two aircraft at the product launch that everyone dreams about flying, the Maule and the Icon. The great minds behind Flight realized the general public has no interest in flying aircraft like those from Cessna, Boeing, Airbus, Piper, Mooney, Cirrus, Lear, Gulfstream or Beechcraft.I'm not sure why they made the P51 Mustang available. But at least they were smart enough to avoid including anything that would get in the way of flying this aircraft, like a cockpit or flight instruments. And we have DLC so we can use our Microsoft Points to buy additional aircraft to complement the Maule and the Icon. I'm hoping Microsoft does the Christmas Bullet next.

I am going to correct your post, before someone jumps on you. The two planes are the Icon and the Stearman, then you can buy the Maule and the RV6 as part of two separate DLCs.

It's a Stearman and the Icon Larry ! The Icon is the most horrible thing I have ever flown but the RV-6 that you get with the Hawaii DLC is fantastic. FSX does have the Extra 300but it flys like a dog. Look forward to that in Flight.Fred.

I understand, Chris. I tried the Wacom A4 and found it a bit too much of a bother to use, since it's very difficult to keep one eye on the tablet & pen, whilst focusing the other eye on the bloody monitor! That's why I returned the Wacom A4 and bought this instead:19" (Kingtee 19MB) Professional LCD drawing board, graphic tablet LCD pen display, monitor, touch screenhttp://www.aliexpres...holesalers.htmlUnfortunately, the young lady was not included... :(72195.jpg

And just like the transition to FSX we all few GA for a long while…Airliners came in time, but their complexity meant they took longer. To bring an old system into future, you strip away ancillaries and focus on fundamentals. For Flight this means GA.If it can do an RV6 justice, it can do the same for a 767.

I sometimes feel bad for mocking the strange car thing so I'm heartened to see Fred, one of Flight's most positive commenters, call it 'the most horrible thing I have ever flown'.People talk about it be great marketing for Icon. To be honest, I think it's just made aviation enthusiasts dislike the brand. If I owned one and was flying it I'd probably pretend it belonged to someone else if asked! "is this MY plane...goodness no!...uh, just borrowed it for the day..'. :)All I want is one good GA plane for release. For me it's the RV6, with an option on the Maule.
