GSX or the... Erm, other one

Howard,As I am flying nothing but the 737NGX at the moment I am all ears to anything that can back it better.I looked at GSX and was not sure.So sell it to me m8.Do you have to have FSX in window mode? if so am out of here.Does it give a FPS hit= a big NO NO for me.From the VC ONLY POV what does it add, not interested it out side views POV.So sell it to me m8.

Well, for starters me 'ol fruit, if you go to the FSDT website you can download a demo. It's limited to only a couple of airports, but is fully working. That is probably the best test. As for framerate hit, well, with the 'other' app, I found a severe hit, but with GSX, it's nowhere as big. One thing to remember about the FPS hit, the aircraft is stationary, so even if there is a hit, it doesn't really show 'cos the majority of things are static! It runs in windowed mode. One thing I didn't like about the 'other' app, was you had to hit F12 to open the menu, then there was a long list of options in quite small font, then you had to hit F10 to close the window. A lot of the time the window would only open when it wanted to! With GSX I have simply allocated the space bar to opening the options window and you simply tap it again when you want it to close... simples! From the VC POV, you can see vehicles arriving and of course the pushback service too. You also hear all the passengers boarding, after the bus has arrived of course. However, I think you'd probably like to drop back to an exterior view every minute or so during your preflight, just to watch the baggage handlers and how carefully they load the suitcases! :( BTW The animations are superbPS. I just want to say that in no way do I wish to be disrepectful to the other product as it is fine, and I'm sure with time it will grow. However, as a regular contributor in the forums, I feel it only right that opinions such as these are shared so others can gain an insight to a product before parting with their hard earned cash!

David,Just to add to what Howard posted, it works in full screen, updates within the programe, so no checking the web site for updates all the time. support is top shelf, Umberto is really customer focused. GSX works for free at all FSDT airports, and trial mode at LIRF and EDDM. Give it a try.
Its a great programme. Though i haven't used it for a few days...there is one annoying sound issue for me, and its the repetitive, "hello" when people board. Sounds like its on a really short loop. A longer sound effect when boarding would be great.Steve

I have both GSX and AES and yes, GSX looks far better. Even with the new update of AES, GSX is a joy to watch although in the end I only use the pushback. However, I have one major problem with GSX: the regeneration of airport cache. Each time an AFCAD is changed, GSX will regenerate the airport cache. It will run all the AFCADs again to have the right understanding of an airport lay-out. I understand that, but I have been discussing with Umberto why that initially took over 10 minutes in my case.Umberto told me GSX will read all the .bgl files again, which is more than only the AFCAD files. It will read the .bgl files in the Add-on Scenery directory and other directories. Although triggered by a change in an AFCAD it will then go through the entire directory. In my case I had over 400 flightplan files, 100+ AFCAD files and hundreds+ files like mesh, UT etc.By now I have merged the Traffic files into only 4 files and my wait now is about 7 to 8 minutes for GSX to regenerate the airport cache. Setting up the FMC etc keeps you busy but GSX always take longer..... :Waiting:My home airport is EHAM, Amsterdam. I have made 4 different AFCADs for EHAM. Due to its complex runway structure a real world usage of the runways can only be achieved by inserting the appropiate AFCAD for a certain wind. In other words, I almost always have a new AFCAD in FSX which triggers GSX to regenerathe the airport cache.....I hope Umberto finds a way to make this process a bit more intelligent so that not all .bgl files are reread again when only one AFCAD has been changed or replaced....Menno

I know what you mean, that green text band giving a percentage of the status. Comes up from time to time but doesn't take more than a few seconds on my pretty full installation. But I must admit that I only enable the scenery I'm flying to. So my trips to Russia only have that freeware and stuff on, while Australia gives me Orbx plus Ant's airports and OZx. But even on the dense US flights (with UTX running, Orbx, freeware and all my payware airports) it doesn't take more than some seconds on a normal HDD, so no SDD.

I love GSX, but only mainly use it for pushback, is there any way to select what type of pushback truck gets used? or is it random? I only ever seem to get the small tractor unit with the NGX, one other time its bee the larger tractor.

Simon Roberts

Tractor size is dependent on the size of the parking spot you are at as set in the AFCAD.

Cheers, Andy.

Mmm, like you CoolP, I have not had any problem whatsoever with this airport cache issue. Not even sure I would know how the problem would show itself!

The manual speaks of the airplane's weight as the reference value for the truck size. I think this means their category while the models then differ within that category I think. You can download extra models or liveries in the FS Dreamteam forums.

Just guessing that a ton of (active) scenery may trigger longer scanning times, but I think I have a ton installed and never saw more than a few seconds at the GSX startup, just like you. Maybe there's a log file that can help the folks with the problem, pointing at the condition which triggers the longer wait.

This is just a heads up for information.I have discovered an issue with GSX and airports that have been modified or designed using ADE.I was receiving the GSX message occasionally that "Pushback not available at this spot". After investigation it became apparent that ADE does not set the pushback bits for parking spots unlike AFX. So when a Gate/Ramp parking spot is placed using ADE the pushback defaults to "NONE". Hence the message from GSX.I have found a workaround which I use and that is to make an AFX overlay for the airport and set the pushback bits (i.e. LEFT, RIGHT or BOTH) for the offending parking spots. My AFX overlays are in their own folder which has a higher scenery priority in my scenery config file than other airport files. This workaround does the job but it does mean that there are two Airport files for the one Airport that have to be managed. It appears that GSX is the first software to properly use the pushback feature of FSX (even the MS pushback commands ignore it). I have a fair few US airports downloaded from the Avsim Library that have been built using ADE so I have to check them for Pushback = "None" before using them since discovering this issue.

John, are you aware of the parking editor that comes with GSX? That's to sort of override the bgl defined parking definitions. What it does is to offer small and FSX internal workaround on the 'Pushback not available at this spot' messages. Mainly to avoid that people have to use editors and things. You can just enter the GSX menu and correct the pushback directions with two clicks.

Thanks for that CoolP, I must have missed it. When I received the first "Pushback not available" message I went straight to airport definitions to find the problem. However, I think my contribution does clarify the "Whys".It would be even better if GSX just treated parking spots with pushback values of "None" as a pushback value of "Both". After all we aren't going to sit in the office of our FSX aircraft and ask for a pushback without a reason and knowledge of which direction the pushback should be made.
