March 23, 201214 yr Commercial Member I'm quite intrigued with the adaptive Vsync and the TXAA mode on this card. I'm planning to build an Ivy Bridge system this summer and I may pick one of these cards up to go with it.I agree with the others that it's not going to make a big framerate difference though. Arjen, if people are only seeing a 20% improvement in actual GPU intensive games with the 680 vs. the 580, there's absolutely no way you're going to get a 15 FPS improvement in a CPU limited game. That'd be a huge percentage gain in a game that's proven to not really depend on the GPU for its framerate. March 23, 201214 yr Hi Argen, please forgive me as I don't want to be disrespectful, but that statement is a load of pure nonsense! I have personally owned both the GTX470 and the GTX580 and done a side by side comparison and I can assure you there was virtually no difference in framerate whatsoever! So, while we know every rig is different and maybe, just maybe someone has gained a couple of frames, there is no way on this earth that you can get a framerate increase of that magnitude in FSX, going from the 400 series to the 500 series GPU.I friend of mine went from the GTX 460 to the GTX 580 and noitced around 10 fps more he said. I myself have had the GTX 560Ti and GTX 580, and between those two cards is no performance difference at all.I'm quite intrigued with the adaptive Vsync and the TXAA mode on this card. But a friend of mine switched from the GTX 460 to the GTX 580 and noticed 10+ fps increase in high framerate areas. For example where he first had 50 fps, he now gets 60 he says, at FPS intensive areas he noticed an increase of around 5 fps he said. My statement is also based on the benchmarks here: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/320755-480-gtx-vs-580-gtx/ Yes I know that the GTX 580 here is overclocked, but it's still a massive difference. March 23, 201214 yr Hello, On the question of Graphic cards, I have always wondered why firms like Nvidia, who must be aware of the existence of FS, dont produce a card specifically for FS users, bearing in mind that the cards they do make are for specific games. Not expert in these matters. richard welsh. Richard Welsh

Video cards are designed on general principles (the Direct X standard), not for specific genres of games. March 23, 201214 yr Am I missing something or is this card worse than the GTX590? I watched a benchmark on NCIX and it performed somewhere between the 580 and 590. It definatly looks rather sharp but for something that goes in mostly dark PC cases there is not much gain to be had there. March 23, 201214 yr Commercial Member I've seen certain benchmarks showing it faster than the 590. The big deal here is that it uses way less power than a 590, runs cooler, plus it has those new IQ features the 5 series won't have. March 24, 201214 yr In most benchmarks, it'll smoke the 590, though it will be rather close. In real life, it'll have the 590 for breakfast, especially when the power bill comes.Nvidia already had a superb platform with the 5-series, they just made it better, smaller, a tad faster, way cooler, and way way less power hungry. March 24, 201214 yr Well it has 2gb of vram, and using the bufferpools setting for reject threshold you can put more onto the 680 than a 580. even a 5fps increase from my 580 would be great in the virtual cockpit with 100% ai and detailed scenery. on the ground my 580 really chugs with 10-15fps at addon airports, it's smooth though but i could really use more frames.
March 24, 201214 yr Well if Dice makes Battlefield 4 with a new FrostBite engine then I'll be getting this new card. :) The 580 is good enough for me... (for now). - Edward Boyte | Youtube
March 24, 201214 yr Utter codswallop my friend! Maybe in some other PC game but not in FSX.Well, it's isn't really easy to measure fps in fsx, it depends on several factors, like mouse visible, weather etc. Maybe his friend was flying around in the default trike at 100fps, then when he upgraded his gfx card and got 115fps.but I doubt it make 10-15fps difference when flying in a sophisticated aircraft like the 737ngx since your fps will rather around 30s range, a 10-15fps gain would be huge then. It would be better to measure fps gain in percent. Tobias

I have been intending for some time now to develop a standard test flight that people can use as a yardstick / comparison test between different rigs, but with a standard set of cfg values, slider settings etc. Maybe I'll pull my finger out and get something up on the forum over the next few days. March 24, 201214 yr Sadly I can't afford it, time to wait for mainstream releases. --------------------- Gabriel Diaz
