Thanks Glen. We do appreciate the positives, and we are sure that the brick bats will follow... However, we have a secret weapon... We have brought a very, ugh.. how do I say this... not so diplomatic Marine to deal with those that have less than a positive attitude over this change. :Peace:

To Tom and the rest of the Avsim staff. I really like the new look of the front page. It looks great. A much more modern and clean looking design. Well done!

Nice work, only one small comments, I hope you dont mind, i would make the article titles BOLD to stands out more a bit, but the rest are fine.

A great suggestion! That would look pretty sharp I think. Thanks

Also, my congratulations. I really like the new approach to bring everything on Avsim together to one platform. I also like the idea to bring some social elements to the content section, such as the ability to rate and comment on articles.

If I have one point of criticism, then it's the layout of the front page. Or more specifically: the two columns that make up the main content area. This area appears a little too cluttered or unbalanced for my taste. For example, the grid-like layout of the article abstracts creates whitespace that makes the site look disturbed:

Also, the columns are too narrow for many of the headlines. Maybe, if you have some time, consider one of the layouts that other sites use:

NYTimes

  • main content area also has two columns, but at different widths
  • articles in the columns have independent height
  • only the top articles are grid-aligned, but their content height matches

Google News

  • main content area in single column
  • abstracts and headlines can have different lengths
  • top stories are in the upper part of the page
  • below that: stories are grouped into sections

I think the single-column approach like Google News would be easiest, since you don't have to worry as much about finding the proper length for headings and abstracts. If you wish some more feedback, PM me.

Apart from that: Good job!

Regards,

Tom

Anyone have recommendations for how to view the home page on a mobile device? iPhone in my case. It is difficult with the ads and other columns compressing news to about 3 words per line.

Thanks.

Joking apart, I know you often state that "AVSIM is not a democracy" (surely that doesn't have to mean it's a dictatorship), but do you seriously just take a closed door view to anything other than positive comments about this change? ...... I just find that such a closed minded, "I have the power goddam it!!!" attitude to take. Joking about Marines and Military people ready to stamp on anyone with a less than rosy comment? ..... has diplomacy failed already here lol!? ......... I mean, is this a flight sim community or a US military fan club .......... sorry, but I personally find it offensive.

David.
