Feedback to the new website

Featured Replies

Hello,

first of all, i didnt know where else to put this topic so i just write here (please move if in wrong category, i have post notification on so i see where it has been moved to).

now my feedback:

the old design was of course a little bit 1995, but the new one has some things i dont like as well. Those things are:

Left/Right bar - its too much and too big. I use 1920x1080 resolution but still, i dont like the size of those boxes. The right one could be entirely removed and the section "Categories" on the right could be moved to the menu as subitem. The donation section could either be moved on the left or be made as a new menu item.

Latest news (entry page) - on the old website, i saw immediately what was new from the library, but now i have to click "read story". I dont know if its possible to show the full story of certain post but if so, please do it.

Artikel rating - in my opinion, it should be removed. It distracts too much of other content. People may say "what? thats not true", but i have some experience in webdesign and one of the keyrules is to keep it as simple/clean as possible on blogs or other news related pages. Also the author and other information (like tags) should only be visible when viewing full story.

Now some CSS things:

ipsSideBlock has margin-bottom 10px - could be removed

the ul element on the left could need a list-style-type: none; to remove the dots, instead you could put a little more space between the menu-items

i just see that the left area has a width of 20%.. maybe doing this fixed would be better

oh and a last idea.. maybe you guys can make different header colors... so for example file-library updates could have a red header, reviews a green one, previews yellow.. that way, you can identify the content much faster.

Ok thats it so far,.. please note, that this is only my personal opinion !

Regards

T.

ps: i just see that there is no "email notification" but instead a "Follow" checkbox.. does that contain email notification? because if not, please add this function. otherwise just ignore this

Help

I'm confused, I gio on holiday and when I come back AVSIM has gone all 21st century on me. Where are the newest files to download etc.

Other than that I kinda of like it.

p.s no worries chaps I have found the new files bit, I am now a happy bunny.

Hello !!!

I like the new frontpage design in general, though I have some comments:

if there is a way to 'tag' new boxes as 'files uploads' or 'news', then:

1. 'New files' box to take full width of 'central pane' (like the top box) and if possible double height, so that more files are visible. This would retain the

new modern design look while it would also retain some of the old 'new files' layout. Also the title could be a different blue color than

the rest of the boxes which are non-file-library related news.

2. It would be nice for registered users to 'adjust' news' page to their needs selecting from a finite set of 'presets'

3. 'mouse-over' popup window function for news' boxes - like it happens in forums where if I put the mouse pointer οver a username, a new window appears with a lot of info.

Thanks for all the hard work all these years.

The frontpage Latest News is rendered in two columns which is hard to follow chronologically. Some articles are out of order.

Please display the articles in a single column so readers can recognized at a glance what's truely new since their last visit.

Thanks.

Hello

I don't have the right words but in my opinion, the new design looks modern and nice.

The problem is that I am lost in it. I really think the old website was much more clear.

I mean it was much easier to find what you wanted, for example, the new files in the files library.

Best regards

Jacques

Please, please, please, please, please follow this advice. I can't come to this website anymore to read the news. It's impossible to read now.

I prefer the new front page but it needs more work to be really user friendly. I agree with the comments above. A single much wider column of news items in chronological order would be much better. What's the point of the star rating on news items? News is news, why should anyone "rate" it. Narrower side bars would be nice as the ads only appear at the top and space below them is blank.

Having to agree with the others. It'll take some time to adjust too since a lot of everything has moved. Not super user friendly at the moment, although I assume it was built with that intention. I think the biggest drawback I've experienced thus far is in the download library side of the house. I'm finding it very difficult to find specific files. eg, setting up AI from UTT, AIG, etc and they mention specific repaints and give the file names. I can no longer simply cut and paste and it shows up...just not working at all and find myself doing a lot of extra leg work to do things that were once so simple and a walk in the park. Seems like there is just way too many steps to actually download something, including the copyright deal, which I understand. Maybe there is a way to make that a one time deal? Over all, it's ok.It's all dressed up and pretty, but until I figure this new AVSIM site out, it lacks the amazing user friendliness in comparison to the ole' AVSIM. Other then that, thanks for being around all these years! :D

Having been a 'nay sayer' on the new format - I have to say that the new file library format stinks. Very disappointing having to faff around with gear wheels and the like - the old format was so simple I didn't have to find a topic in the forum to find out how to do a simple search. Is this a way for AVSIM to commit suicide I wonder? They are certainly going the right way about it.

yeah i must say i was looking for some AI Aircraft of Somon Air.. i did a search but it it wasnt simple like the old search so i went instead to Flightsim.com and downloaded from there..

I miss the simplicicty of the old site.. this is too chaotic in the use and to look up things..

The new file library is horrible. It seems someone had the not so bright idea of changing it, just because they could quite frankly.

I'm sure you're aware of the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"?

I'll be using Simviation & Flightsim for my file needs from here on unless Avsim decide to do the sensible thing and revert to the previous format.

Thanks

Matthew T Gardiner

I also have to say, that the new design is horrible. Absolutely not user friendly. It's hard work to find a simple file. No previews on the file list. The old search was much much better. And page loading is very slow. I miss the simplicity of the old site too!!!!!!!!!!! It makes no fun to visit avsim.

Yeah new file library makes no real sense. Old one did its job perfectly, why change to more complicated system?

Hi, very happy the former library file is back. Much more clarity indeed and much more user friendly.

Hello

I will not stay that way for long, the new library will be implemented whether the users like it or not.

The management are free to do whatever they want, it is their toy box after all.

But I would advise them to keep a keen eye on the numbers of users logging in compared to other sites, Flightsim.com springs to mind, it seems their user base has been growing a lot recently and now usually has more concurrent users logged on than Avsim.

This surprised me as I always thought of Avsim as being the most popular.
