Moon on a Stick...

Featured Replies

Just some general comments here and all, of course, just my opinion...

I'm amazed at some people's expectations for MSFlight (and games in general). A lot of people really do seem to want the moon on a stick.

People seem very happy with the vast improvements in framerate and general performance that Flight offers (particularly vs FSX); and rightly so. No more buggering about with bufferpools.

The scenery we do have (admittedly limited) seems much more accurate and detailed than the standard autogen we're used to. Similarly, the aircraft we have (again, limited) are much slicker and refined than the stock craft we're used to, the VC views in particular.

And, so far, (depending on your DLC) it's cost us between £0 and £30ish. I've already had 35 hours of good fun flying with MSFlight and compared to other computer games, that's pretty good bang for your buck.

I don't see how people can complain! As far as I can tell, a lot of people seem to want:

  1. High detail and non-autogen scenery (a la Flight) that covers most or all of the world
  2. A library of twenty or thirty aircraft, all highly detailed (a la Flight)
  3. The same dynamics and modelling as a training simulator
  4. High performance and framerates on medium spec machines (a la Flight)
  5. None or very few bugs (a la Flight)
  6. All of the above for less than £30.

How much programming and development would be required for all of the above and how much would it cost? My guess is: about the same as a full-spec simulator at your local flightschool!

I'm not saying Flight is perfect but we have to be realistic; its remit is to offer smooth, attractive and realistic flying (not to mention fun) that doesn't require daily .cfg tinkering or a super-computer.

I think it does exactly what it says on the tin...

Seriously, what is the purpose of this post? NO ONE IS COMPLAINING about Flight on this forum. As a matter of fact the people who care about Flight are happily flying it while everyone else has moved on. You people asked for your own forum where there are no negative posts about Flight and you've got it and and you're STILL complaining about people complaining? Anyone with a differing opinion from yours has gone away. Look around you. You've WON.

I can think of at least three platforms that fulfill these requirements.

This means that a newbie like me cannot understand these FSX problems. I will comment only on Flight (and thanks to this forum, there is a lot of useful info for a beginner).

I want to be a VFR simmer.

A warm welcome from me! Look forward, not back!

Happy landings!!

Regards,

Tom

Please return to your game pad.

Bummer, I just bought the Saitek Combat Rudder pedals...

BTW I don't know what you mean with 'flippant attempt to put me in my place'. Sorry if my post offended you. It is very clear you are very disappointed that Flight isn't FS Next, but there is nothing we can do about it expect say that you and everyone should enjoy what we've got.... FSX of Flight or whatever.

I'm sorry, I felt like you were trying to lead me to something relevant, then you came up empty handed and essentially told me to get over it. But please keep in mind that this thread began as a question by the OP, and I responded with reasonable and mature answers. I'm not forcing my views into a tangent conversation.

woops, nevermind. I have been a bit testy in this thread (there was a different thread from yesterday where I was being more reasonable).

PS- I'm thankful to hear that not everyone is selling their flight sticks and rudders! I've begun to wonder what the heck is happening around here.

I'm not sure who "you people" refers to but I've recently returned to this forum from a spell away from sims altogether; I didn't ask for any sort of forum to be created.

As I said in the OP, it was a general opinion based on gamer's expectations in general. It's generated a lot of discussion. I wasn't trying to WIN anything.

@vonBobo (and all others who are moaning about Flight not being FS11): what if Flight had been released by Aerosoft or whatever other company and NOT by MS... Just think about that for a while.

It wouldn't have changed a thing for me as I would've ignored the game in either case because it's not a proper flight simulator. I'm a real world pilot and flight is not useful to me in the least. It's a game, not a simulator. Even for a layman that was just interested in aviation you could actually learn quite a lot about many different aspects of flying in previous versions of flight simulator. I don't see that being the case in Flight. But again, why does anyone on this board care if the majority of the simulation community reject a little flying game? Why are there so many threads with ###### trying to convince people that Flight is something that it isn't? I really don't get it.

No one's forcing you to read this forum. If you aren't playing Flight, why are you here?

Also, I'm invoking a corollary of Godwin's Law: The first person to use the word "######" in an argument automatically loses.

LOL There are many threads from people who like Flight. (If that defines them as '######', so be it.) But they are usually simply expressing their excitement about MS Flight. They are NOT posting what they posted to convince others that Flight is something that it isn't. But quite often people who do NOT like Flight come in (which I really don't get... ) and start saying Flight sucks or is crap or whatever and only THEN some people try to explain why they think that's not the case. In short: you are turning the world upside down. There aren't many threads with ###### trying to convince people that Flight is something that it isn't, but there are many threads hijacked by people that say Flight sucks.

My point was that if MS Flight had been created by (for instance) Aerosoft, I think 99,9% of the people who don't like Flight and are heavily disappointed, would not have posted about it. They simply would have ignored MS Flight. Just like they all ignore Aerofly FS. No heated discussions in that forum! So if you imagine MS Flight is from another dev, then nothing is lost. You still have FSX and maybe P3D. The disappointment ONLY comes from expectations which were wrong... or misleaded, as some say. After Aces was shut down no one expected something new to come. And indeed, nothing new came as far as FSX is concerned. Something ELSE came however and that was MS Flight.

Now I don't know if this is another way of saying 'Get over it' but it isn't meant that way. I just try to show things from a different perspective. I know it is easy for me to talk because I always liked low and slow flying. I do own the PMDG 737NGX and loved flying it, but I love flying the RV-6A in Flight more... If you don't, I can understand it's frustrating. But when you look at it a bit objectively, nothing is really lost... apart from some hope and expectations, of course...

Hm, I doubt if this made you feel better... I don't think words can help here.

I'm not sure what a ###### is... but you missed the point of the OP. I wasn't trying to convince anyone that Flight is something it isn't. As I said, it does exactly what it says on the tin. It's not a world-covering, professional training sim with a every aircraft under the sun... it's a small area, four or five craft sim with (for me) the best flight/graphics engine.available. And for the price, it's great value for money...

for slow-speed VFR, I think it beats all previous Microsofts and X-plane (although I haven't tried the latest version). Again, just my opinion! Which sims are better for the price in your opinion?

I have been a fairly active member of this forum since installing Flight and giving it a try back on March 5th.

I have to say, I have been big time impressed by how this Flight forum has turned out.

I thought I kept up with it pretty good, but danged if I see what you are referring to above. I see a lot of sharing of experiencing in Flight, along with the occassional hiccup which thankfully those have been just a few, and now even some users creating some challenges for others to try.

Perhaps the majority of the flight sim community is rejecting Flight - but I don't think anyone really cares at all - heck I am a member of the flight sim community I guess, have been doing it for several years, still have and love FSX.

Flight ain't for everyone just like FSX ain't for everyone.

But I do want to say how impressed I am on how this forum turned out , it has become the first of the day and the most visited forum on Avsim in my case.

Don B

J van E - you and others on this forum talk an awful lot of good sense.
