This is quite sad indeed. Unless Haswell will turn out to be a true monster, I doubt that we are ever going to be passing the 5-5.2GHZ barrier....

I think it is the 22nm that will keep the user from pushing enough volts through the chip to hold 5 ghz.

Hardocp has been running a SB @ 5ghz for a while on water. So it is possible on SB's. Proper cooling is all you need. Too bad refridge cases didn't take off.

Haswell is a tock so hopefully intel will have perfected the 22nm by then and it will be a beast.

*crosses fingers*

So, what is the verdict for new PC builder as of April 2012? IB or SB 2770K? Stock frequencies appear to be the same for both CPUs. No plans for overclocking in near future (just want to see how FSX behaves and then make a decision whether I need overclocking or not)

Either CPU. It really depends on your budget. If I built today I would just go IB.

No budget go IB, smaller budget go SB and put any extra towards a GTX580 or 680.

If you have SB already, keep it, don't upgrade. If you have older machine, then IB, good cooling etc. If you have no plans to overclock ATM, then IB definitely as it's just a little bit better clock for clock.

I'll update the guide soon.

IB or SB 2770K?

2700K is the best OC chip on the market as far as I am concerned. I personally have lost all hope for IB.

This is what I am hoping for too. I am just worried about those tiny little 3D transistors... Ever more sensitive to excess voltage.

As i said earlier - there is no plans fr overclocking.

Word Not Allowed,

Sorry for hijacking the thread in different direction, but if no overclocking is planned, perhaps i7-3830k would be a good choice for me (I know that it's expensive), since it has L3=12MB and 6 cores. Is there any evidence that FSX benefits from increased L2 and 6 cores?

Thank you

Lost generation!

Why would a Tock help with IB? Would adding two more cores help FSX?

It has not helped (correct me If I am wrong) going from Sandy to Sandy-E.

If I am reading all this correctly.. Its i7-2700 for FSX is the top dog as of today and in the IB-E lifecyle..unless.. PCIEx3 is going to be a miracle (We are scratching the barrel here).

Weak evidence. NickN says it does, I did some comparisons, I had 2500K here for testing, so yes, it performed better. More cores mean more texture loaders... that kind of stuff.

If you're thinking about building a new system I'd recommend Z77 + i7 2700K + GTX 580.

You know what? This is actually good news for us. As we are now approaching the limit of FSX performance, maybe the endless vicious circle of hardware upgrading will now finally stop, and now spend money on add-ons instead of hardware. I mean, the only reason I was planning to maybe upgrade to Ivy Bridge, was because I hoped for more FPS and especially more smoothness. But with Word Not Allowed's smoothness tweak, microstuttering is not really a problem anymore.

I've been saying for months that we are approaching the limit of FSX performance. The GTX 680 brought nothing in terms of general performance, not in terms of IQ. Ivy Bridge brings just the same and possibly even less than Sandy Bridge. The only thing that MIGHT bring something is PCI 3.0, but I don't expect too much from it to be honest.

The only thing that I'm currently planning to upgrade is my mobo, so I can finally get rid of those awful double boots.

Yes, I'm getting closer to purchase this combination, since stock frequencies for 2770k and 3770k are exactly the same, i.e 3.5-base /3.9-turbo. All the media reports point out that the only benefit of IB is improved on-board video. No other break-throughts.

Exactly what I was going to post! Although, I am becoming a skeptic of Asus motherboards after the issues I have had with my P8P67 Deluxe.

Me too, totally fed up with Asus. I heard good things about Asrock. Might go for an Extreme6 or one from the Fatal1y range. Oh and Ben, I see that your 2700K can be stable at only 1.34V. You can easily reach 4.9 - 5.0 GHz when staying below 1.40V!

Ben,

I'm no 'connaisseur' in motherboards, in fact no 'connaisseur' about much in computers but I'm getting closer and closer to buying my last items for my new rig and the selection of a motherboard is somewhat of a challenge. But I've more or less boiled it down to two choices: ASUS's P8Z77-V Deluxe and MSI's Z77A-GD65. Based on what I've read, the MSI board is favoured by many folks both as a probable purchase and an actual purchase. I'm leaning toward the MSI board strickly on what others are saying about it. I don't know about PureOC's reputation but for what it's worth, here's a link to a summary of an evaluation of the MSI board I read a few days ago and of special interest, the second-last paragraph. Another plus, it's exactly $100 CDN less than the Asus board.

Your thoughts would be helpful.

I have heard some very good things about the Extreme6. I am currently stuck between that and the MSI Z77A-GD65 (http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813130643).

A good review that includes the Extreme6 can be found here: http://www.techspot....rboard-roundup/

And as far as ASUS goes, I have had two MoBos die on me in the last 8 years, both of them were ASUS. I don't plan on purchasing ASUS anymore and am skeptical about ASRock even though they are not "technically" the same company but rather ASRock is owned by a subsidiary of the ASUS parent company. However, the Extreme6 reviews are very compelling.

Yeah I was looking into an ASRock board too, I'm fed up with Asus and it's double boots D:

K, when it arrives, be sure to tell us if it double boots or not! Big%20Grin.gif
