April 22, 201214 yr Commercial Member A "Tick+", but perhaps the "+" is more about the GPU. We'll see soon enough with more benchmark results. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4378/ivy-bridge-a-tick-with-configurable-tdp See the last "slide". www.supertrafficboard.com
April 22, 201214 yr Author Those results make no sense at all to me. How can a 4.6GHz 3570K score 8:11, beating the higher clocked 2600 & 3770K that also have HT? Ticks are just die shrinks / new manufacture process, and clock for clock IB is just about a 5% faster than SB. I honestly think that those are a bit fishy. I am starting to get a bit concerned that SB is the last CPU generation that will ever be hitting the 5GHZ barrier...
April 23, 201214 yr First reviews look pretty disappointing. Reviews are hovering around 5-10% performance gain with OC's appearing limited to under 4.8ghz unless advanced water cooling is used. One site (PC Perspective) could not keep the chip under 80 degrees at 4.7GHZ w/ 1.3v. But the reviews are relatively new so we will see. Here is HardOCP's: Link And a round up list (from HardOCP) of other sites reviews: Round-up Link I would like to see along with everyone else if PCI-E 3 will have any impact on FSX. I am leaning towards no at this point.
April 23, 201214 yr Commercial Member I am looking to get a new computer in the next 4-6 weeks (I am going to wait to get more reviews of IB). My current system is so old I wont even bother posting the specs here... My question to you all is this; given the lackluster IB overclocking (as of today) compared to the 5GHz+ on SB what would you suggest purchasing? With a 5-15% (generous) clock-for-clock performance upgrade would it make more sense to purchase a SB and get it as high as I can, or go with the IB with the understanding that 5GHz is not going to happen? Most likely going to go with the H100 water cooling system by Corsair regardless of IB or SB. Again, I am waiting on purchasing the components until I can get more IB info, and hopefully more IB FSX specific info. - Jordan Jafferjee - AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D | Asus X670-E Pro Prime | Gigabyte RTX4080 Eagle | 64G G.Skill Trident Z.5 DDR5-6000 | Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 | 2x2TB Samsung 990 Pro NVME | NZXT H7 | Win 11 24H2 | TM Warthog Flight Stick + Throttle | Honeycomb Alpha + Bravo | MFG Crosswind Rudder Pedals | Samsung 43" Odyssey Neo G7 | Dell U3415W
April 23, 201214 yr You have to understand, that beside those clock for clock differences, IB also brings the PCIEx3, and coupled with a good GPU we might be seeing differences. But this all has yet to be tested. With SB you will lock yourself up out of that.

True, and I am thinking about the GTX680, again waiting for some FSX specific info (this is an FSX Rig first and foremost). I think it is fair to say that unless IB proves to be worse than SB purely from an FSX standpoint I will be going with IB. - Jordan Jafferjee - AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D | Asus X670-E Pro Prime | Gigabyte RTX4080 Eagle | 64G G.Skill Trident Z.5 DDR5-6000 | Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 | 2x2TB Samsung 990 Pro NVME | NZXT H7 | Win 11 24H2 | TM Warthog Flight Stick + Throttle | Honeycomb Alpha + Bravo | MFG Crosswind Rudder Pedals | Samsung 43" Odyssey Neo G7 | Dell U3415W
April 23, 201214 yr I hope the price for SB will drop when IB is released, and I'll probably swap it for the IB 6-9 months later if there's definitive evidence of improvement in FSX performance. AFAIK I can use both SB and IB with a 7-series LGA 1155 mobo. It will definitely be a step up from my old Lynnfield!
April 23, 201214 yr I don't remember prices of Intels ever dropping much. It's just the policy of Intel. The only pricedrops are the marges of the retailers. And those are not high.
April 23, 201214 yr I don't remember prices of Intels ever dropping much. It's just the policy of Intel. The only pricedrops are the marges of the retailers. And those are not high. I'm thinking about discounts on discontinued or clearance stock, or from the 2nd hand market. Right now a new SB 2700k will set me back around US$380 retail in my country. The IB 3770k will have a RRP of US$313 at release so there's clearly a lot of room for discounts.
April 24, 201214 yr I think FSX has effectively hit the wall of what processors (CPU & GPU) will be able to do with it. It is limited by its own architecture. April 24, 201214 yr Kyle Bennett Couldn't have said it better in the article that JohnFromCO posted a link to here: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/04/23/intel_ivy_bridge_processor_ipc_overclocking_review/1 Specifically, this: " When it comes to overclocking Ivy Bridge, we are actually seeing results (at least so far) that are lagging behind current Sandy Bridge overclocks. It is not uncommon to have Sandy Bridge processors (2600K and 2500K SKUs) that hit 5GHz+ with rock solid stability. From my very narrow experience so far, I would suggest that 4.7GHz and 4.8GHz top end overclocks are going to be realistic for most users with top end sealed water cooling systems using Ivy Bridge. Getting to the magical 4.9GHz mark took us a lot of voltage and a lot of cooling. So just for a hypothetical look at this, if I can take my new Ivy Bridge up to 4.7GHz easily with good temps, and comparatively I can take my Sandy Bridge up to 4.9GHz with good temps, I have basically just negated my Ivy Bridge IPC gains." April 24, 201214 yr I've just read 3 reviews on IB, and all 3 show the same result. Same performance as SB with slightly higher overclock, which SB can easily reach in comparison to IB. One even says IB is going to be easier to fry, or at least, Intel says that. Time will tell on that one. We now know: SB vs IB = 0 advantage (or if measured clock for clock, around 5%, if even) 580 vs 680 = 0 advantage (in terms of performance) P68 vs Z77 = 0 advantage The only open thing is PCIEx3. We shall know soon enough.

April 24, 201214 yr So, what is the verdict for new PC builder as of April 2012? IB or SB 2770K? Stock frequencies appear to be the same for both CPUs.
