I'm not talking about FPS....they mean absolutely nothing... if it's running smoothly it's good to go.it's just that you can't achieve the same viewing results or overall performance. I can't see using the keyboard for lift,pitch or roll never mind trying to switch views or anything else during a flight.

Using Sony Viao VPCEC2S0E for 12 months - runs everything for FSX - 737 NGX etc , ORBX scenery, FS Dreamteam and it runs very well and flyable. Also use it on VATSIM and gamespy .

for those of you that expect to get desktop performance out of a laptop are going to be very disappointed. I can't seem to understand why anyone would want to "cut" out the best FSX has to offer by getting a laptop.There is no comparison period.I had both and the only thing I use my so call fsx laptop for is weather and charts along side of my real Fsx computer.

 

A laptop certainly is not the best option for FSX, but there are people like me that travel for living, getting short term contracts around the world. For these people, there are two choices, fly FSX on a laptop or don't fly at all.

 

After some tweaking, FSX runs just fine on my laptop, no very high FPS, but smooth. See specs below.

Ever tried connecting a joystick to the laptops USB? It works ;)

 

All in all... you can run FSX+NGX OK on a laptop... Dont expect it to run perfectly though. Not worth putting upwards of thousand pounds in it...

 

Some tips:

Get an i7, there are many laptops with it, highspeed too.

Get a decent nVidia videocard, GT540M at the very least. 1GB VRAM will do if you sacrifice 4096px clouds and whatnot.

Really important and quite underrated - get a fast disk. 7200RPM at least, SSD ideally. Maybe a combination of big 5400 for files and common programs and decent sized SSD for FSX, or FSX+OS.

Also get a cooling mat and I definitely recommend getting a monitor.

Get the Asus G73 (see my specs), massive fans=OC & it's an gaming laptop.

i think for 1000 GBP, you wont get a laptop that can run FSX with some addons at high settings. In fact, you wont be able to run anything above 30 fps that looks at least a bit good. 200-300 GBP more and the thing looks different again. You might find a good one at german companies (cheap/powerful). For example, i have the Medion X6813 (which is very powerful) and i paid 1300€ for it. Now i buy a bit better one for 1600€ and will with this one hopefully be able to run FSX at high settings. The medion works too but may strugle from time to time

Due to my job contracts shifting me around, a laptop was more logical for me. I scoured the internet for the best one ideally for use with FSX. I ended up going to pcspecialist.co.uk for mine, (although i did splash out on top of the range). It was 1000GBP cheaper than the Alienware top spec, with the same components inside. For sure the chassis of the laptop is not so sleek but it's what's inside that matters. Try searching for 'custom made laptops' online, you will be suprised at how much you can save with the smaller companies.

yep, i can agree to the above topic. Alienware and all the other companies sell their laptops why to expensive. My Medion was twice as good as the (at this time) current Alienware and was 50% cheaper

I have a not new Toshiba A500 and I am running FSX and the NGX and it runs very well. Not everything in the scenery department is running at max and I have no payware airports that drag down the frame rates but it does work very well and certainly well enough for me not to consider a desktop. Once in a while I have skeleton frames but it never crashes.

 

I have on this laptop;

 

a dual core 2.66 Cpu

Nvidia 230M 1Gb graphics

4 Gb RAM

Windows 7 home premium.

Saitek X52 flight controls

 

I am running the NGX, REX V2 with OD, FTX Australia SP4. Now I don't have frame robbing airports as I said but it does run damn well and always above 20 fps regardless of weather. I just don't fly from the VC and I don't switch views on finals too often. It works and I am happy with it. I cannot see the need for an I7 or a desktop. I tried running it on another laptop I have which is a similarly specced I5 and it was much worse than the dual core 2.66.

I purchased an Asus G74SX i7 2670QM 2.2 GHz 12GB RAM 1500 GB HDD.7200rpm. Runs perfiectly. Always above 20 fps. No stutters. I run the PMDG 737ngx....never had any issues. most settings on max, although i have tweaked my fsx.cfg.

If you can afford it, I'd highly recommend putting a SSD drive in it. I've found that immensely improved performance on a Dell XPS laptop. Not only in FSX on a laptop, but in overall laptop performance. Also generates less heat and improves your battery life a little.
