What is Reality XP?

Featured Replies

So I was looking at the RealAir Duke and one of the things they mentioned on their site is...

If you have one or both Reality XP GNS WAAS gauges as well as the Reality XP GNS Unlimited pack installed in FSX then you can enable crossfill between two GNS gauges simply by selecting the crossfill option in the Turbine Duke Config Panel.

What is that? Simulated instrument add ons for add ons? Seems odd to me. If you get them, can you install them to multiple aircraft in your personal 'fleet'? What's the upside? What's the downside?

It really is a great addon, that simulates the "real thing" very well!!

And "yes", you can install them in various aircraft that support the Garmin 430 and 530. They use the actual Garmin trainer sw as their underpinnings and are exceptionally well documented.

Pricey. It looks like if you want to configure the Duke the way they suggest with both the 530 and the 430 you have to buy both (at $50 a pop) and then buy a $100 add on? The Duke comes with a GPS. Is the Reality offering that much better??? I assume you can add them to as many aircraft as you want?

I've seen several aircraft that have nice integrated GPS's...the SR22 and Columbia 400 from Eaglesoft...

http://www.eaglesoft...Columbia400.htm

Several Carenado aircraft including the BE90 and PA34. The PA34 actually comes with both the 530 and the 430 (their own version) installed.

The default GPS that comes with the Duke is just a version of the default FSX unit. Though functional, it has definite limitations.

The Reality-XP units, by contrast, are exact emulations of the real Garmin GNS 530/430, with probably 98% of the functionality of the actual units. There really is a significant difference, especially when setting up and flying approaches.

There is no real advantage to having both the 530 and 430 installed simultaneously. If you were to purchase only one, the 530 would probably be the better choice.

As others have pointed out, once you own either Reality-XP unit, you can install it in multiple FSX aircraft.

Unless the aircraft you're simulating has both! I fly a DA40 which has both a 530 and a 430. I can tell you without a doubt that not only is it an advantage to be able to simulate this, but also an advantage to their "unlimited" pack which allows cross-fill.

I'm currently in instrument training, so, at worst, the cost of the RXP add-ons is quickly offset.

The upside is that you get an exact replica of the real Garmin gauge..

The downside is that you get to fuss with panel.cfg files for all your favorite

aircraft.. example below - RealAir Lancair

Ok...well I'll add a 530 to start with in a few weeks. I'm in the process of picking out an airplane to put one in. I'll start out with the 530. Am I correct in my understanding that if I do opt to put both into an aircraft I'll need to buy the 430 as well as the Unlimited thingy($100)?

Still in the process of picking out an aircraft. RealAir has my attention with the Duke and the Legacy.

The only small niggle with RealityXP is that the database is quite old, unless it has been outdated with the latest version of the Realityxp. You can install RealityXP in any plane and it's then accessible as a popup by clicking on an icon. If you want to have it integrated into the panel, you have to rely on either the airplane supporting it or the great minds of people like Bert Pieke (who replied in your thread) who can modify the panel.cfg.

Personally I just love RealityXP and it's one of the things I first look for in the specs for an add-on that I consider buying. The only GA plane I fly without the RealixyXP (530 is my case) is the A2A Cub since it's so darn slow that before you reach ANY waypoint you are half asleep.... At the moment I am exploring ORBX' USA in my RealAir Lancair with the RealityXP 530.

Am I correct that those are also RealityXP gauges?

The Garmin units have been retrofitted iinto the panel.

The gauges are "custom" Real Air creations.

You can update the databases to as recent as June of 2011 with a bit if a trick, which gives you quite a few LPV approaches. Beyond that, you're currently stuck.

As for "needing" the unlimited pack, I dunno. I've had the 430 and 530 for some time now and never picked it up. Crossfill would be nice, but I typically use the 430 for backup radio/nav and terrain avoidance in dual installations, so it's not a requirement to me and I only have a couple of planes where I'd do dual 430s.

I guess I'm in a whole new jargon (and a surprising and interesting one at that...I had no idea these things even existed!) So it sounds like "Unlimited" is for crossfill. What is crossfill and why is it worth $100?

Is there TCAS functioning w/ the 530? Dunno if that is part of the real deal but it seems odd that a turbo that can fly that high at that speed has no TCAS! I'm pretty ignorant of real-world comparisons, i.e. whether it's an instrument these sorts of birds would have or not.

The way Reality XP has approached their marketing, is that the 530 and 430 are positioned as "Entertainment products" and priced as such. The Unlimited package is positioned as a "Prosumer" product, and priced accordingly..

Crossfill is the ability of the units to share information such as flightplans. The unlimited package also comes with traffic display and alerting.

To start with, I would suggest getting the 530. It has a bigger screen which gives you more information. For that, it does not fit into many panels that have "half-high" radio slots.

The RealAir Lancair is a nice way to start as it comes with the option to install a 530.

It is as good as it gets for FSX and is fast!

Another favorite plane is the Carenado C337 which likewise is pre-configured for the 530.

Or, if you like a fun plane for flying around, look at the Baytower RV7!

If you need any help with any of this - send me a PM.
