I'm a bit luckier. Mine arrived this morning (TIR5 with TrackClipPro). What a nice bit of kit - much smaller than I imagined and works great with the standard clip.

However, I just can't get it working correctly with the TrackclipPro. It works, sort of - but the thing is all over the place. I think I'll stick with the hat clip as it works wonderfully.

Now I'm just waiting for MS to put guns on the Zero and I'll be more than happy.

Be sure to select the TrackClipPro in theTrackIR program: it defaults to the older hat clip system. Since that is working fine, you probably did not change the setting when you were using the clip. You really should the the clip to work because it's better.

Please enlighten me. I've used the "not as good" hat clip TrackIR Pro for at least 6 years now without any problems or complaints whatever. What specifically makes the TrackClipPro any better? Perhaps this is just a personal preference on your part? If it is in fact better, please quantify that.

Thanks.

Thank you.

First of all, if you are happy with your current setup, by all means, keep on using it! wink: However, the Clip is said to be more accurate and has less problems with interference of other light sources.

Some quotes from the internet:

AVSIM review

NaturalPoint chose to use glowing LED lights to replace their reflector system for the TrackClip PRO. LED lights have some advantages over reflectors. Compared to reflectors, the LEDs are much brighter and consistent-looking to the TrackIR camera's eyes, although to the human eye the emitted light is actually very, very faint.

This means that the camera sensor will accurately track the TrackClip PRO, and the user can sit farther away from the camera under lower light conditions and still get excellent responses to head movements. Also, when you turn your head far enough, the surface area of a reflector that can be seen by the camera will be reduced, which may affect the accuracy of the unit. This does not happen with the LED lights on the TrackClip PRO. I have found that it is possible to turn my head away from the TrackIR sensor so that my face physically blocks the output from the LEDs, but by then it was extremely difficult to focus my eyes on the screen.

Posts from NaturalPoint employees on their forum:

The regular TrackClip, or Vector Clip, is based on using a reflective material to bounce IR light back at the TrackIR camera. The TrackClip Pro uses active IR LEDs to transmit IR light directly to the camera. This can allow for better tracking in lighted conditions. This also allows you the ability to attach the Clip to a headset for use within your applications, instead of using a hat.

- As you turn your head with the standard TrackClip, the visible size of the reflecting area changes (less is visible depending on how your head is rotated). This requires more math to determine whether markers were changing size due actual movement or due to less visible area. The TrackClip PRO's bulbs present a more consistent size for tracking, which leads to more precision (which can be important if you're applying a lot of amplification).

- The TrackClip PRO projects 3 infrared lights directly at the TrackIR (rather than passively reflecting IR light from the device). As Vincent noted, this allows you to turn off the camera LEDs, which can help prevent interference from additional IR light being reflected back into the camera from other objects in the camera's FOV.

- Hat brims can obstruct your field of view, while headsets should not.

- By clipping onto a headset, the TrackClip PRO can be a bit more secure in how it's mounted to your head.

- Many simmers/gamers already wear a headset and prefer not to wear a hat as well. The TrackClip PRO allows them to work with the accessories they are already using.

I have to add though that the last quote was introduced with this:

The difference between the two is somewhat subjective, but there are some reasons to believe that the TrackClip PRO offers slightly increased tracking accuracy (which is what many of its advocates from within the TrackIR community believe):

So again, if you are happy with what you've got, stay happy! I like the Clip though.

O, yes, one disadvantage of the Clip: yet another USB-cable...!

As with everything in life there are cons and pros but most people seem to like the clip more.

As soon as I learned about the upgrade, I jumped on Amazon and ordered the TrackIR 5, Next Day Delivery! It installed easily, but when I hit F9 for cockpit, nada! After a quick keyboard re-map, I was up and running. Wow, talk about imersion! I also felt a twinge of airsickness, but did not need to use the bag. Thanks MS. This one is a biggie!

I think this says it all. All the reasons are subjective. Point being, if the differences are as subtle as indicated, then it simply becomes a matter of personal choice. Naturally, if I was purchasing today I would go with the newest model. That's typical isn't it. But, if one has a perfectly working older model, then the only reason to purchase the newer one is to have the latest technology.

The only other valid reason would be that the newer model has substantially greater functionality which is not the case with these two models.

Whichever way someone goes, I'm sure they will be happy with either model.

As a side note, I saw the TrackIr Pro priced on the internet at less than 100.00 US. That's a 60.00 savings if one is willing to purchase the older unit.

Thank you.

I think you are mistaken the Clip with 'a new model of TrackIR' (?). The Clip isn't a new model, there is just one version of it: it's an additional piece of hardware that you can buy seperately or in a bundle together with TrackIR 4 or 5. You still get the old hat clips with the TIR, even if you buy the clip.

When it comes to models: I have TrackIR 4. If that one would break, I would buy a new TrackIR instantly, but I think I would buy a cheaper version 4: the differences between 4 and 5 aren't really worth 50 dollars. To me the Clip is worth the extra money though (in a bundle) because for me the advantages are clear, even if they are subjective.

You can also remap the Track IR Pause, Center, Precision, and Profile hotkeys as well to get them off those function keys that Flight uses.

I remapped these to my left arrow, right arrow, up arrow, and down arrow.

I have a version 3 track I R which must be 7 or 8 years old. Works perfectly with the latest software. No reason to upgrade that I can see.

I'm not going to argue with you. Take it from a long time MFS user and also someone who found work-arounds for such issues on "really low end" hardware (a GTX260...).

I started flying FS with Version 2, so I probably have you beat by a bit. Never really heard anyone complain about Track IR bogging down a system.

Got mine....but I have some questions. What adjustment do you use to look down.? I can't move my head more than 5 degrees down before the pic freezes.

Try looking down some and hit the Recenter button. F12 by default, I think.

Or up? I get confused thinking about it. I think it's up. I just do it naturally when I'm using TIR. Anyway, play with that and you should find a centering position that works well for you.

Look up and hit the center button........

Thanks. that works.

Next question.

How do you stay planted in the seat? Flying the Maule looking straight forward and and trimming the nose up or down knocks everything out of whack. Lift the nose then drop it leaves you floating above the seat as if you just grew 2 feet.

Never had that happen. In fact, I was quite impressed at how stable TIR is in Flight. I've made hour-long flights without needing to recenter.

You can just hit the Center button again if things get out of wack, but something is wrong if you have to do it every time you trim the plane.
