How to use GMap as a popup within Flight full screen

Featured Replies

One quick question....I got it working, and I love it...when I actually click on the Gmap window, my game pauses. I can call the window up using ctrl-shft-z without any interruption, but clicking it pauses my game. Is this right?

Did you do this:

5. In Flight disable Full Screen in the Options > Graphics menu and disable Pause Game in the Options > Gameplay menu?

All of this is excellent information Jeroen, many thanks!

I have not tried GMap because I did not want to lose my full screen view in Flight, but now after seeing this thread and a way to get a psuedo full screen whilst using it, I think I will have to give it a try.

Don B

and disable Pause Game in the Options > Gameplay menu

Well, this must be representative of dealing with the public at large....we tend to not read what is in front of our faces.

I skimmed the instructions and missed this bit. OK, I'll do it when I get home and I'm sure it will work just fine, thanks Jeroen.

This whole idea is a really brilliant solution, as I'm sure we can all attest to.

Opening post updated because of a great tip from TweakFS (Fermin Fernandez, the dev of GMap) about a standard GMap shortcut (Ctrl-Shift-z) that hide/show GMap! Now you will be able to call up GMap without losing sound! I added this to the tutorial and removed the steps to disable Stay on top and the comment about losing audio.

Did you start Flight first and GMap only after Flight was fully started? I usually start GMap when I am on the Flight map. However, it happened once or twice that I couldn't connect anyway: restarting Flight as well as GMap (in that order) solved the problem.

Tried that, still doesn't work.

Also, ctrl/shiftt Z doesn't work while in MSF, but does in desktop.

Will contue to search.

thanks

PS. Is there a newer version of FSW GMAP?

Uploaded mine a few months ago.

Ah, yes there is. Download the one from the tutorial!

I have been playing around with mine for many hours, and finally gave up this morning, going back to Alt Tab.. I finally decided to run it windowed this morning, since I determined that all I was missing was about 1/2 inch atthe top of my monitor. Looked OK, cause I could go down to the hidden task bar, click on Gmap and it would pop up over the windowed flight. Then I decided to take a screen shot of it, and guess what, I get a message that I can't take a screen shot because my display is spread over more than one monitor>>>>>>>> :Hypnotized:

That's it, back to full screen and Alt Tab.....

Down loaded new one.

Still doesn't work.

But, the old one used to work, a couple months ago, just didn 't need in Hawaii.

Will keep trying.

Check the filedate on the .exe file. It should be 6/30/2012 if it is the latest.

The same version from the day before 6/29/2012 will not connect if you are in Alaska.

In any case, try M for the Map, select Hawaii, then try to connect GMap. It should connect. reselect Alaska, and you should be back where you left your aircraft in Alaska.

I tried it and it worked but I can't run in windowed mode. When I do I get a pause about every second which is very irksome.

I think Flight matches the real thing rather well, at least when it comes to valleys, rivers and roads and other things that help with VFR. I was following some of those rivers with lots of turns yesterday and when I switched to topdownview in Flight, it showed the EXACXT same lay out as GMap did, up to the smallest parts.

Navigating only using VOR isn't as easy as it was in Hawaii. And since the ingame map is useless for navigation, this is so far the best solution, I guess.

I find that the physical shape of the terrain is exactly the same, i.e. mountains/valleys/rivers/etc. being where they should be, whereas the "painting" of the scenery is often quite different from the real thing, i.e. fields/forests/farms/towns/etc.

That being said, I really don't give a rip if Flight's landscape painting isn't picture-perfect. (Hell, it's not like I'm going to go to Alaska, take pictures and grade them on it.) To me, if it's believable, that works just fine.

There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.

I've been using ICON 5 GPS map.

Zoom in and see ILS layout and airport outline for large airports.

LOL - well, after all that, I get home from work, and it DOESN'T WORK!!!

I know PFS is hitting FLIGHT, as when I hit Win+F11 the logo screen sort of jumps to the top left and stays there..

When I am in the game, however, I alt-tab back to desktop, open GMap, (which for some inexplic able reason now connects immediately-which it hasn't done unless I choose Hawaii then AK - v2.11)

I alt-tab back to the game, and no GMap..I hit ctrl-shft-z. Nothing. I alt-tab back to the desktop and GMap is hidden. I can make it appear by hitting ctrl-shft-z again.

I alt-tab back to the game and no GMap..

Am I missing something?

Also has the formatting on this topic gone all skew-wiffy? It is for me..The banner that's usually along the top has movwed to the left and the whole topic now needs to be scrolled to the right to read it!

Forgot to add: I have two monitors, different sizes and resolutions..you think this matters? When FLIGHT is in FS mode, the RH screen is black but I can put my mouse pointer over it in-game and it appears (the mouse pointer) so that screen is not "blacked-out" IT was always thus; not just since trying to use PFS

Bummer; it's always me: the IT guy..I've spent the last two hours trying to get my home network sorted so my missus' PC downstairs works..she's like a black-hole of technology..anything she touches stops working within a week...
