July 23, 201213 yr Well this is on a subject we should all be familiar with: Cockpitless planes! Now I know that many people have taken a firm stance against them, and some people have flat out said they wont buy even one, but with the currently ending Summer blowout on Steam that saw those cockpitless planes going for less than $3 I found that both my curiosity and my innate impulse to have a "complete" collection nudged me into finally purchasing those planes I had previously avoided. Somewhere in my decision-tree towards taking the plunge, it also occurred to me that if they can add a cockpit to the Cub, then surely these planes might be in for the same treatment at some possibly far off future date, and it might be nice to have them already available at a very cheap price. Did anyone else take the plunge? (Yes, I know its sacrilege!) By the way, have you noticed that with the release of the full Cub on the 25th all Flight civilian planes will have cockpits and all war birds will not? Two separate market segments? We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. July 23, 201213 yr Well, as far as I am concerned I took exactly the opposite route :-) Having bought all of the cockpitless airplanes, and even having used at least the Zero and the Corsair a lot, I decided to not buy cockpitless models again. It also came to my mind that cockpits for the so far released cockpitless warbirds may be in the plans of MS, but I will wait and see. Getting more involved with ms flight and flight simulation in general also brought new "projects"... I am trying to decide myself for a more fsx/xplane-like platform. I have been reading about LM's Prepar3d, xplane10 and DCS-p51 (well, this one only for the acclaimed fidelity of the flight / systems models). At this moment I am trying to make my mind regarding Prepar3d or xplane10. I still have a few add-ons for fsx available at the original sites for download/install, and most probably all of it could get installed in Prepar3d... The reason for this? I need complex cockpits/systems again... I need to have RW Weather again, I would like to be able to fly in Europe, particularly in Portugal and Spain, and have World coverage, even if not with the detail of MS FLIGHT's Hawaii. I also feel the need for some sort of ATC... I can forget about AI aircraft but I must also confess that the lack of it in MS FLIGHT is more and more noticed, specially when arriving at those huge airports.... And what about ELITE? Yes, I still use it, but the visuals are so limited compared to present day standards that even the detailed aircraft systems and "parametric FDs" aren't sufficient for themselves to make me feel completely satisfied..... July 23, 201213 yr I love you JC (not in that way LOL) You have not only the intelligence to question your own decisions, but the honesty to admit you maybe made the wrong decision (or the right one, depending upon what day of the week it is ) And again, to admit that even that decison may have been wrong. You say it how you see it. I like this. I strive to be like that in my every day life, and get told off for being tactless and blunt LOL It is a refreshing change from the polarised camps that seem to make up the large part of the flight simming community (of all flavours, not just XP/FSX) As for your dilemma, I can only vouch for the ESP-based product of which you speak. Having not played XP since v8 or 9 (can't even remember, it was so forgettable) I can easily say that, if you liked FSX, you will continue to like P3d..If you disliked FSX, take a look at the feature list to see what they changed/fixed Now I'm going to duck, as JvE will be on us like a hawk for not having this discussion somewhere else (like here) Back OT (see, Jeroen :P I can stay OT) IF they produced 'pits for all those warbirds, I might buy them..But then I have Wings of Prey, which I rather like, despite its more "gamey" ( than FLIGHT?!) aspects, for WWII action..I want SaR and Polar Bears, not pretend shooties over the wastelands of AK JAKE EYREIt's a small step from the sublime to the ridiculous...Napoleon Bonaparte
July 23, 201213 yr Well, I have Il-2 1946 which already includes all the MS Flight Warbirds with cockpits, and also allows them to do what they were meant for. So I'm not really interested in paying to bring them into MS Flight*. I could see myself collecting all the GA aircraft they release. But if the rate of release picks up, I may start picking and choosing only the ones I'm interested in. *Since I have the P-51 (a gift for being a beta tester, didn't buy it...), I might buy the cockpit for it if it's released at some point and at a reasonable price. Just since I already have the rest of it...
July 23, 201213 yr I downloaded the free Red Tails P-51 just to see if the cockpitless planes were as unusable and disappointing as I suspected they would be. They were. But I still did decide to grab the F4U as I loaded up my shopping cart with the Steam sale winding down. I don't intend to fly it, really, but I do need it for a video project I'm about to start working on. And at $3 or whatever it was, that's cheap enough for a throw-away item that won't get touched again. Heck, I spent more than that on a chocolate shake and fries at Mickey-Ds this weekend. And maybe, just maybe, there will someday be a cockpit-upgrade version offered. That would make it my plane of choice for joyriding and sightseeing.
July 23, 201213 yr Hi, Well, it seems that we all have our price. Mine was downloading the free P-51. I'm not sure what that means. Jim F.
July 23, 201213 yr I didn't download the free P-51, I didn't buy any planes without VC during the Steam sale and I haven't flown the Cub yet. I simply never ever fly out of the VC so why should I bother even trying those? I won't buy skates because I don't like skating, I won't buy shrimps because I don't like eating them and I won't buy planes without VC because I don't like flying them. This has nothing to do with 'sending a message to MS' or 'being strong' and 'sticking to your principles'. I KNOW I don't like those planes so why should I bother! BTW I don't like warbirds either so even if MS decides to release VC's I won't buy them. I will certainly buy the Carbon Cub coming wednesday, even though it's too slow for me. But it seems like a fun plane to have for short hops or making trips from and to the same airport.
July 23, 201213 yr I finally bought a Corsair just to try out one of the warbirds -- about a week before they announced the free Red-Tail Mustang (aww grazzlefrat!) To me, they're only useful to go from A to B quickly - other than that, they fly like dung. Previously I said I'd buy anything with a cockpit, but if the upcoming VC Cub is anything more than dirt-cheap, I'm less interested. I'd prefer something with a lot more "oomph" for doing jobs across such a wide expanse as Alaska. (And flying 4 passengers in a Cub at a breakneck speed of 95 knots is just plain silly.) There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.
July 23, 201213 yr (And flying 4 passengers in a Cub at a breakneck speed of 95 knots is just plain silly.) Well, the solution to this is very simple: don't do it. Pick another job. Problem solved. There have been more posts about how odd and weird and stupid it is that you can fly 4 passengers with the Cub and although I of course agree with that (that it's odd) I don't care about the 'problem' at all because I am free to choose my own jobs. So what's the problem? If you own a Cub in real life and someone asked you to fly 4 passengers somewhere, what would you do? Right. The same as I am going to do in Flight: refuse the job and pick another. Some problems are SO easily 'solved'...
July 23, 201213 yr The ability to fly 4 passengers in a Cub is weird but amusing. And you can't fly 4 passengers in a Maule without being overloaded by 77 pounds before you load any fuel. Of course you can still fly the Maule overloaded; I just took off with a gross weight of 3029 pounds (981 pounds of clanestine cargo and way too much fuel) without difficulty. Max permitted weight on the Maule is 2500 pounds. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
July 23, 201213 yr (And flying 4 passengers in a Cub at a breakneck speed of 95 knots is just plain silly.) Silly but fun, the Cubby is just fun. It will be even better in a couple of days. It is what I fly most often in Alaska. Yes, it is slow, so I do have to use the skip way more then I would like.

Actually, I do the job anyway and pick a more appropriate aircraft. :lol: Now, if MS comes out with something more powerful like a Cessna 208 or a decent twin with VOR instruments, I'm all over it. B) There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.

July 23, 201213 yr I also hope at some point in the months ahead that MS addresses the seaplane (amphibian) and seaplane bases thing. I know it's a bigger issue than just a plane -- the seaplane bases need missions as well. There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.
