So... 980x @ 4.48 for now, next year in Haswell...

Looks like we are on a similar plan! I want to upgrade late 2013 also. If Haswell is a flop... then IDK what to do LOL!

:LMAO:

I was always told that it's good to be strong, but smell isn't everything.

As for my current rig, it's quite good under most circumstances - still grinds down under 15 fps in heavy scenery or conditions - urban areas, complex add-on airports, heavy weather.

Alan, the 980X is a very good chip, I was farting around the other day coming in KMIA with Captain sim 727 in heavy scenery (urban area) with heavy weather and everything maxed out, flight was smooth as a baby's butt, here, two approch in same condition, only problems is the autogen popping...

Alan, the 980X is a very good chip,

Agreed. I originally built the system in '09 using a 965x, which was a big improvement on what I'd been using before (a Core 2 Duo). But I was never able to get it to a stable overclock past 3.875 GHz. The 980x, which I swapped in about 18 months later, went right to 4.48 and stayed there. I made a couple of other changes (improved heatsink, lapping, case with better airflow) and you have to make allowance for how individual chips behave, but still, the gains were pretty dramatic.

I'd originally planned to skip the next generation, but got tempted by Ivy, not fully understanding the timeline to Haswell or the possible gains. So now I'm back to my original plan.

I can get performance similar to what you show in your video, but not always. Last week I had the Dodosim 206 at FSDT Ft. Lauderdale and was getting about 12 fps on the ground, in not-too-severe weather. I think the lesson for me is that I still need to be careful with the heaviest sceneries - FSDT, and I've had to turn off lots of features on the most recent ORBX airports. An easier adjustment might be to be less greedy about autogen (currently at Very Dense) or road traffic... will have to do some more experimenting now that it looks like I'll be on this platform a while longer.

I'm going to wait just one more architecture change before I upgrade. In the past 5 years I've upgraded 4 times (and changed CPUs 5 times if you count selling off my 2600k). ie E8500, Q9550, i7 960, i5 2500k. I've got FSX where I need it for now, and P3D is looking more and more enticing if they'll ever work on the licensing and pricing. I'm saving my PC fund for the next "big" break through... Or the next time I break something "big"... Or maybe a DC-3 type rating. Idk Money%20Eyes.gif

Is it me or do you guys get burned out from constant upgrades? I have to take a break and slack off for some time to keep interest.

Personally, I love upgrades. I have gone through 4 graphics cards in the last 9 months. I think it is part of the hardcore hobby and I really love it!

I'd have no problem with upgrades if it wasn't for the pain of having to reinstall FSX. Anything that requires a motherboard swap - and therefore a reinstall - makes me hesitate. If it wasn't for that, I might still consider moving to Ivy now and Haswell later, even with the additional dollar cost. But to have to build up an FSX install, then do it again... no, sorry, I want my install to last for a while. This of course works for my budget, too, even if (though I wouldn't admit this everywhere) finances aren't my main consideration.

That's the only thing that keeps me from upgrading to Ivy. I absolutely loathe the idea of reinstalling FSX. Just messing with simconnect gives me an aneurism.

You really don't need to reload when swapping motherboards, especially not when going from one Intel chip to another. Win 7 is smart enough to figure things out.

That's just too much for my taste and IMHO a waste of money.

Quite correct, I went through 3 years with one install, and I believe there were 2 upgrades involved. All went cool. Just now I reinstalled W7 due to being loaded and slow (and I had some problem with systray icons loading).
