Went multi-platform...

Featured Replies

I was missing a few things from FSX Gold, like those twilight / dawn flights where it is pitch dark in x-plane or we do not have a full moon, while it can appear coming from where no one really knows, etc.... The Sky (objects) in X-Plane are very poorly modeled, and if I can accept that regarding other stars (I couldn't care less if I can see this or that constellation...) I certainly can't accept that the Sun is not modeled in terms of it's apparent movement coorectly, with a huge difference between the reality and when it rises/sets in the simulator... The Moon is even worse... I believe this will get a fix before we get to the final X-Plane10 release :-)

I was also missing the easy way to set up a flightplan using the Map, without having to install yet another program, the default GPS, some of the default aircraft in FSX Gold, some aspects of plausibility in terms of scenery ( yes, although I still prefer X-Plane10' s night scenery and even the effects of OSM when properly created... ), diversity of cloud models, having traffic without being that weird ( like b744s landing at grass strips... ) and, most of all, good aircraft add-ons I had bought.

Took me 3 minutes of tweaking and I am yet to see less than 30 fps on my rig :-)

Do I miss X-Plane, FlightGear or ELITE ? Certainly NOT - I use the three :-)

In FSX I have to set the sensibility sliders all the way to the right (maximum sensibility) while in X-Plane10 I have the Artificial Stability sliders at 100 % :-)

Of course, just like in X-Plane10, FSX Gold aircraft also show rool-on-torque, they also weathervane at even slight winds, although not right away as you release the parking brake like some aircraft in X-Plane10.

The turbulence can be adjusted. Overall I believe both simulators can give acceptable feeling of turbulence and shear... Yet, I still prefer the ride X-Plane10 gives me when under gusty winds / turbulence. I am not using any fancy Weather programs in FSX Gold.

The turboprops in MSFS, unless designed specifically to do so (like the Aeroworx Kingair) don't model hot starts, something you can get into in X-Plane10 if you do not follow the correct startup procedures...

The biggest difference, IMHO, is when we fly helicopters in FSX... It is so different!!! I opt to fly them just in X-Plane10.

Etc....

Thank you Larry ;-)

I went thru this with XP9. Even made a bigger switch using a Linux build. It felt good to be distant to the masses, praising XP and Linux for the flight modelling and the speed. The day came when I started to miss the things you mentioned, and a few more. Today I am a happy Windows and FSX user again. Sometimes I lurk here to see if XP is ready, but I think XP 10 is not complete enough to lead the market.

Ralf,

I think I perfectly understand your point, yet, what I say is that I am enjoying them all now :-) FSX Gold, X-Plane10, ELITE and FG2.8

I couldn't stop using X-Plane10 - there are just too many good reasons to keep using it!

Hi, in one hand is always better to have more options than few but in the other hand is good to focus in one thing only.

Hi Alex,

I agree, it gets too complicated and expensive.

As the saying goes "Jack of all trades, master of none".

On the other hand, those who choose to limit themselves, are known to "live under a rock".

I doubt you'll find anyone who'll fly in ALL of these just for the sake of NOT limiting themselves:

DCS

Falcon F-16

Flight

FSX

FS9

X Plane

Aerofly

FlightGear

Elite

P3D

BUT, if they CAN...I'm totally and completely envious at their recall abilities for each sim when it comes to key presses.

I can barely keep up with 2 sims. Let alone all those.

I guess I'll go back under my rock.

Seeing how I have more invested in FSX............I'm 99.9% sure that 3rd party X-Plane developers, would rather see people like me......go (or remain) "multi platform", that just sticking with one.

Way too many! You get the RA Lancair, and I'll get the DC-3. That should do for now...

Pretty harsh statement!!

We all have different needs, some look for realism (realism is defined by the user), some look for eye-candy and some look for both. What's the big deal if some of us just decide to use one and concentrate on it. I do not see myself "Living under the rock" just because I like X-10 better then FSX and this is based on my own reasons.

I have no problem with you preferring X-Plane. I'd have a problem, if I was stuck with X-Plane only. And I do prefer realism & eye candy. Seems that both sims seem to have it................if you look for it.

I can come close,

I have:

DCS A10 & P51 (use once a month)

FSX (Use once a week)

FS9 (not currently installed)

X-Plane 10 (Use Everyday)

P3D (use occasionally)

IL2 COD (Havent used in months)

Rise of Flight (Use once or twice a week)

Aerofly FS (Use once a week)

I do get confused with the key commands occasionally, which is the downside of using so many different flight sims.

I don't know how anyone could not go multi platform if they are searching for reality-at least my experience in the last 31 simming years. Fact is no matter how much we wish one sim to have it all in the reality department it has not happened yet. To limit one's self to one sim and it's version of reality ....Well limits oneself! Why on earth would anyone want to do that when the rw experience of flying has so many life awakening aspects-that so far has not been completely accomplished by any sim? Take all the pieces whie you can!

I gues you would have to be in one's shoes to understand why Geofa.

Fortunately I'm not one that is looking for a sim that "has it all" just looking for one that suites my needs and my budget. X-Plane does that, even with out the eye-candy.

Don't have a powerful computer, but what I have does handle XP9 and XP10 just fine very fluid and without blurries (something I just could not get rid off in FSX, for me, this one thing takes away the immersion of flight).

I do have FSX but just don't want to end up spending on two sims as I'm currently budget tight due to my son and daughter college tuition cost.

I'm not a real pilot so "searching for reality" at least for me is not what I look for.

I tried to go multi. Several times. Even with my favorite FSX add ons. PMDG's 747-400 and the RFP 747-200 (I had a very early beta, many years ago).

Couldn't do it. Things are way too different.

Unlike Carlos, I AM a real pilot, and I do prefer X Plane as an overall choice. And it's not because I have a vested interest in X Plane. If it was about that, I would have entered the FSX development world years ago. The market is much more lucrative (Oh, the figures that I have been told!). I simply chose what I was personally comfortable with and what I consider better...for ME.

Keeping in mind, I was heavily into MSFS since FS5 up until FSX. I even beta tested Flight. THAT was a shame that it ended. It was very promising!
